  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Right, presuming you know. I'm not talking about telling jokes to strangers and gauging their response. I'd say being reckless with where you aim your jokes is immoral as well. Criminal indifference, if you will.

Not when it comes to racist jokes, necessarily, but when it comes to offensive jokes in general, I have people tell me a joke that they think is truly terrible before I tell them one of mine. That's the best way to gauge whether someone is comfortable joking about a topic or not. And so far, after hundreds of clinical trials on my own part, it is infallible. Going first is quite the opposite.

If you know your friends well enough to know whether they're bigots or not, then it isn't an issue when they're not. Even if they are, it'll only make it easier to out them as a bigot if they were keeping it a secret somehow.

So it isn't hard to tell who your audience is, what they're comfortable with, and why they're comfortable with it. You just can't tell jokes to strangers.

Well, clearly you intend to go on doing whatever you've been doing and apparently were just looking for online validation.

What is the mating call of a blonde?

Why would anybody make jokes about Polish people?

I'm Soooooo Drunk!

Each new wave of immigrants became the butt of jokes mainly for being different. Polacks were portrayed as stupid and mocked for other differences.

One ironic bit is the historic list of really top flight mathematicians is loaded with Polacks. I wish I could remember the guys name, there was one from a small isolated village who only had a century old text book. He derived the vast majority of the intervening centuries work on his own.

Oh that is one other thing. Each wave of immigrants had a lot of people from small villages but they at least entered the U.S. and likely stayed in the cities. That meant all the usual mocking of country vrs. city types.

Indeed. Also chemists and physicists. (like Madam Curie)

As to math, the Poles invented a style of math equation different from the standard algebraic (arabic) model. Instead of writing 3 + 5, Polish notation put it + 3, 5.

When electronic calculators were first developed in the 1960s, it was a modified version of the Polish notation that Hewlett Packard used for their calcs, called Reverse Polish Notation, or RPN. So now it was 3, 5 +. (no = key)

I still use a RPN calc, (HP 42) and have an HP 42 simulator on my phone and on most all of my computers.

lol No. I don't need validation. I tell jokes that are a lot worse than racist jokes. I wanted to get a bigger understanding of how people receive them than what I can gather from my little corner of the world.

People with a good sense of humour can still laugh at themselves, if someone makes a good joke about them. Pride is the sin that led to the devil's downfall, and as none of us are perfect, let no one nor group pretend they are.
Oh sure u can laugh at yourself - its when others are laughing at you that things get unfair and upsetting.

That's not offensive to me or anything, it's just not funny at all.
