White privilege is not being arrested for sitting quietly in Starbucks without having made a purchase while waiting for a business appointment.

Actually, nobody was arrested for "sitting quietly in Starbucks without having made a purchase."

People were arrested because after the "I'm sorry sir, I'm going to have to ask you to make a purchase or to leave," they did neither of those things, but became hostile.

I myself have had staff in restaurants and coffee shops say "I'm sorry sir, I'm going to have to ask you to make a purchase or to leave," and I've either made a purchase or left, all very quietly, without making the kind of fuss that requires the police to intervene.

How did they become hostile?

How should I know?

Faced with a similar request to "make a purchase or leave," I don't become hostile, but different people react in different ways, and for different reasons.

Just thought you had heard something I hadn't. It appears you didn't.

A. No, they didn't become hostile.
B. People sitting in Starbucks normally don't get asked within minutes after sitting down to make a purchase, nor had other people in that Starbucks at that time been asked to make a purchase...so your experience elsewhere is irrelevant.

This racist cop had the audacity to issue a speeding ticket to a driver doing 70 in a 55 mph zone.
With the climate of race relations we have today in this country, this turned into a racial incident, which should have just been someone getting a speeding ticket.

Video doesn't lie

“I have had a traumatic experience and I want the people who are not African-American who know me to really get where we are coming from,” she says. “When I saw the police pull up behind me, the state trooper, I was immediately afraid."

“This is the area I’m in," she said, panning the camera around to show the rural roadway. “In the middle of, this kind of stuff. This is where I am, so it’s not like I’m not afraid, because this is where we got lynched."

She added: “Do any of my white friends…feel like that when they get pulled over?...Are they afraid that they are never going to come home or see anybody else because police are at the door saying [I’m going] to pull you out of the car? Why do only African Americans and people of color know what I’m going through right now?”

Great example of why body cams are necessary in police work.

AFAIK, that was never said. The story I've seen is that the one guy asked to use the bathroom, the store refused saying he had to be a paying customer, the guy didn't mind, sat down and then an employee asked if he wanted anything. He said no, they were waiting for someone and had some water and didn't need anything. Then the police were called. Apparently nobody asked them to buy something or leave and happened with a few minutes of the men coming into the store. I swear I remember reading something about the manager making it a thing to just call the police when she wanted someone removed rather than giving the customers notice that she wants them to buy something or leave. I don't remember if that was from the interview with a former employee, or an article about this particular incident.

I myself have had staff in restaurants and coffee shops say "I'm sorry sir, I'm going to have to ask you to make a purchase or to leave,"

Your experience elsewhere is not really relevant. Different stores, different situations. Starbucks itself wants people to come and hang out, whether they purchase something or not.

and I've either made a purchase or left, all very quietly, without making the kind of fuss that requires the police to intervene.
The police were not called because they made a fuss. It seems no fuss was made until after the police arrived.
