dont know what differnce would it make to find the meaning of the word Quran it self , but as my brother said the word Quran comes from reading (in arabic ofcourse )

تسمية القرآن :

القرآن اسم يطلق على كلام الله عز وجل المنزَّل على خاتم الأنبياء محمد ( صلى الله عليه و آله ) خاصة ، و لا يسمى بذلك غيره ، و هو اسم لمجموع ما هو موجود بين الدفتين و المشتمل على مئة و أربع عشرة سورة ، أولها سورة الحمد و آخرها سورة الناس ، و في الحديث المَروِي عن الإمام جعفر بن محمد الصادق ( عليه السَّلام ) : " .. القرآنُ جملةُ الكتاب .. " .

و كلمة " قرآن " مُصْطَلَحٌ إسلامي و حقيقةٌ شرعية إستُعمِلت في كل من القرآن الكريم و الحديث النبوي الشريف بالمعنى الذي ذكرناه .

لكن يصح إطلاق " قرآن " على جميع القرآن الكريم و على السورة أو الآية الواحدة و حتى على بعض الآية .

هذا و إن معنى القرآن في الأصل هو القراءة ، قال العلامة الطبرسي ( قدَّس الله نفسه الزَّكية ) : القرآن : معناه القراءة في الأصل ، و هو مصدرُ قرأتُ ، أي تَلَوْتُ ، و هو المَرْوِي عن إبن عباس ، و قيل هو مصدرُ قرأتُ الشيء ، أي جَمَعْتُ بعضهُ إلى بعض .



مجمع البيان : 1 / 14 .

في العربية فكلمة "قرآن" تعني قمة القراءة وسناها. فهي القراءة الكاملة المطلقة. وأصل كلمة "القرآن" هو "القراءة". وفي كلمة "القراءة" مشترك لغوي ، أي أن الكلمة نفسها تعني أكثر من معنى واحد. فمن معانيها "الإعراب عن الشيء" أي فهم نص وتوضيح وتبيين ما خفي منه ولزمت الحاجة إلى توضيحه وتبيينه.

It is wrong to say that Quran means Explanation or Interpretation .

Quran means THE WORDS OF ALLAH .

سؤال : ماذا تعني كلمة " القرآن " ؟
جواب : القرآن هو كلام الله العزيز و النص الإلهي المنَّزل بواسطة الوحي على رسول الإسلام و خاتم النبيين محمد بن عبد الله ( صلى الله عليه و آله ) بلغة العرب . و هو المعجزة الإلهية الخالدة التي زوَّد الله تعالى بها رسوله المصطفى ( صلى الله عليه و آله ) ، و هو الميراث الإلهي العظيم و المصدر الأول للعقيدة و الشريعة الإسلاميتين ، و الذي لا يُعْدَلُ عنه إلى غيره من المصادر .

تسمية القرآن :

و القرآن اسم يطلق على كلام الله عز وجل المنزَّل على خاتم الأنبياء محمد ( صلى الله عليه و آله ) خاصة ، و لا يسمى بذلك غيره .

so when the Qruan mentioned the word quran in the Quran, did the arab knew what does it mean? or they didn't know it?

The answer :
1+ 2 : the arab knew what does the word Quran mean , and they used this word to express about these words of Allah .
they said " we heard an Amazing Quran " , so they call it in the same name to express about Allah words only , and they didnot use this word before that .and they observed that the words of GOD were unlike anything they had heard of before...
so, they knew its meaning ,and they didnot use this word before .

they knew Quran is the true words of God that He gave to us through His prophet Muhammed. God expects us to believe in His book and his words. and that The Qur’aan is the final revealed Book that contains the message of guidance from Allah for all humankind.

It is wrong to say that Quran means Explanation or Interpretation .
Quran means THE WORDS OF ALLAH .
there is a clear difference betwwen quran and explanations , quran is words of Godm explanations are not ... also we can translate explanations to any langauage - these explanatios are words of people - but we cannot translate quran itself to any language .

عندما مر الوليد بن المغيرة بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو يقرأ القرآن فأتى قومه يقول (والله لقد سمعت من محمد كلاماً كلاما " saying 'ما هو من كلام الانس ولا من كلام الجن , ان له لحلاوة وان عليه لطلاوة وان اعلاه لمثمر وان اسفله لمغدق وانه ليعلو ولا يعلى عليه.).
that means clearly that arabs didnot know the word Quran before prophet told them its meaning " words of God " .... because they were calling Quran before that ... sayings . that also means that if they knew that word before they would say it " its name " and not say ...sayings .

so after that they were saying about God words Quran , and stopped to say ... sayings .

All of these thoughts are wrong completely ....because :
1- Quran means words of Allah , and there isnot any other saying opposit to this saying . it is generally accepted between all islam scientists and studies .

2- Quran is an Arabic word , as you were told that before , and its origin & roots in language is from the Arabic word READ "READIND ".
(ولا تعجل بالقرآن (طه 114) (لا تحرك به لسانك لتعجل به ان علينا جمعه وقرآنه) (القيامة 16 ـ 17).
3- Quran is words of God himself ............... and no one can call it Explanation or Interpretation- as you did - because Quran is not the same as the bible ,,and the talmoud which jews claimed that talmoud is the explanation of torat " bible"
4- i am really amazed from your wrong saying that Quran means Explanation or Interpretation ........... ,how and why to say that !!!!!!!!! Explanation or Interpretation of what !!!!!!!! of nothing >>>>>>>>>>>> Quran is not related by any thing was before it ,,,,,,,,,so why and how you say that is its meaning ...

Dear, you said they didn't know what does the word Quran means till Allah revealed his words to Muhmed. And you claim that the word Quran is an Arabic word! but they didn't know it till Muhamed reavealed its meaning to them??
1- how come that the word Quran is an arabic word and at the same time Arab didn't know it?
2- Where & When did Muhmaed explain the meaning of the word Quran to them?
3- How can Quran use *unknown words* that Arabs didn't know, and yet it claims to be in a "Plain & Clear & Understandable" Arabic?

Excuse me but I think you are purposely trying to evade the very clear answer given by brother subduer…he has clearly stated that the Quran as a name that refers to the BOOK of God was not known to the Arabs only after the Holy Verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad pbuh… He did not tell you the word Quran is not an Arabic word, or that arabs didn’t know it. plz read what he wrote again … i dont think its that difficult to comprehend...

Qur'an was revealed over several years through Prophet Muhammad

"It is We Who have sent down the Qur'an to you in stages." Surih 76:23

and the references to Qur'an in the Surahs (see 25:32 and 76:23) mean the Revelation revealed up to that point as the Revealtion was continuously chanted and recited by the companions and others regularly.

There were also secretaries who also wrote the Revealed Word on whatever they had available and these eventually were gathered together with the oral tradition and were compiled as the Qur'an we have today.

According to "A Dictionary of Islam" the word Qur'an is derived from the Arabic "Qara" which occurs at the beginning of Surih 95 which is said to have been the first Surih revealed to Prophet Muhammad and has the same meaning as the Hebrew word "kara" "to read" or "recite"... - p. 483

so the word Qur'an refers to the recitations or Revelations received by the Holy Prophet.
