• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A synonym is a word you use when you can't spell the word you first thought of.

Someday my ship will come in. But with my luck, I'll be at the airport.

Okay, that's enough for now.

We all want progress, but if you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

The greatest threats to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal -- well-meaning but without understanding. -- US Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, 1928

You care for nothing but shooting, dogs and rat-catching, and you will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family. -- Robert Darwin, to his son Charles

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who say that there are two kinds of people and those who do not. -- Unknown

The heresy of heresies is common sense. -- George Orwell

I have pledged upon the altar of God Almighty eternal hostility to tyranny over the minds of men. -- Thomas Jefferson

Carl Jung (paraphrased): We do not become enlightened by visualizing beings of light but by bringing light to the darkness.

PHIL: It's the same things your whole life. 'Clean up your room! Stand up straight! Pick up your feet! Take it like a man! Be nice to your sister! Don't mix beer and wine, ever!' Oh yeah, 'Don't drive on the railroad track!'
GUS: Well Phil, that's one I happen to agree with.

Einstein (who had a view of reality that did not accept quantum physics) was prone to say things such as: “God may be devious but He is not malicious” and “God doesn’t play dice with the universe.”
N. Bohr (who was another physicist but not quite so well known as Einstein) once responded by saying: “I wish that you would stop telling God what to do.”
I remember reading this somewhere many years ago and it just kind of stuck with me. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where I read it. If anyone knows the source, please post or let me know.

Alfred North Whitehead: The aim of science is to seek the simplest explanation of complex facts. We are apt to fall into the error of thinking that the facts are simple because simplicity is the goal of our quest. The guiding motto in the life of every natural philosopher should be, seek simplicity and distrust it.

Charles Darwin: Science consists in grouping facts so that general laws or conclusions may be drawn from them.

Science cannot prove anything .... from "Scientists Confront Creationism"
by Laurie R. Godfrey (ed.), p 33

Mark Twain was supposedly asked, “What would men be like without women?”
His response was something like: “Scarce, sir -- mighty scarce.”
