  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Quiz time - calvinist or arminian?

Yeah, definitely don't believe that Christians can lose their salvation, or that God only "elects" certain people.

So what are the other options, cause I'm not conforming to either in the OP?

Lutherans are neither Calvinist nor Arminian. Its a false dichotimy. (sp?)

But for the fun of it on the quiz I got

Calvinism: 62%
Arminianism: 58%

Interesting how you can combine the scores and get more then 100%.

Well, people generally go by the number of points so you can either call yourself a 1 point calvinist or a 4 point arminian. :)

That's the tricky issue with these things. You can perhaps group them into synergists and monergists, but even then the issue gets divided. For example, how Arminians perceive God granting grace to an individual might be different than how, say, an Eastern Orthodox might perceive it. Just as how a Calvinist may perceive God's intention for the use of the church with the world would differ with how a hyper-Calvinist would.

It makes for a fun quiz, but I wouldn't take it TOO seriously.

80% Arminian.

Also, I feel like this test was way crappy. As are opinions of Arminians. I swear, if someone calls me semi-pelagian again....

here are the FACTS of Arminian theology(an acronym which is supposed to be cool sounding, like TULIP)

Freed by Grace (to Believe)
Atonement for All
Conditional Election
Total Depravity
Security in Christ

Depravity (Article 3)

Humanity was created in the image of God, good and upright, but fell from its original sinless state through willful disobedience, leaving humanity sinful, separated from God, and under the sentence of divine condemnation.
Total depravity does not mean that human beings are as bad as they could be, but that sin impacts every part of a person’s being and that people now have a sinful nature with a natural inclination toward sin, making every human being fundamentally corrupt at heart.
Therefore, human beings are not able to think, will, nor do anything good in and of themselves, including merit favor from God, save ourselves from the judgment and condemnation of God that we deserve for our sin, or even believe the gospel.
If anyone is to be saved, God must take the initiative.

Atonement for All (Article 2)

God loves the world and desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Therefore, God gave his only Son to die for the sins of the whole world so as to provide forgiveness and salvation for all people.
While God has provided for the salvation of all people by Christ's sacrificial and substitutionary death for all, the benefits of Christ's death are received by grace through faith and are only effective for those who believe.

Freed by Grace {to Believe} (Article 4)

Because of Total Depravity and Atonement for All (as described above), God calls all people everywhere to repent and believe the gospel, and graciously enables those who hear the gospel to respond to it positively in faith.
God regenerates those who believe in Christ (faith logically precedes regeneration).
God’s saving grace is resistible, which is to say that he dispenses his calling, drawing, and convicting grace (which would bring us to salvation if responded to with faith) in such a way that we may reject it. Those who hear the gospel may either accept it by grace or reject it to their own eternal destruction.
Apart from the realm of pleasing the Lord and doing spiritual good, people often have free will, which means that, with respect to an action, they can at least either do the action or refrain from doing it. People often have genuine choices and are therefore correspondingly able to make choices.
God has ultimate and absolute free will. His choice to supernaturally free the will of sinners by his grace to believe in Christ is a matter of the exercise of his own free will and sovereignty.

Conditional Election (Article 1)

God has sovereignly decided to choose only those who have faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, for salvation and his eternal blessing.
God has foreknown from eternity which individuals would believe in Christ.
Among Arminians, there are two different views of election conditioned on faith:
Individual election: The classic view in which God individually chose each believer based upon His foreknowledge of each one’s faith and so predestined each to eternal life
Corporate election: Election to salvation is primarily of the Church as a people and embraces individuals only in faith-union with Christ the Chosen One and as members of his people. Since the election of the individual derives from the election of Christ and the corporate people of God, individuals become elect when they believe and remain elect only as long as they believe.
(For more on corporate election, see here.)

Security in Christ (Article 5)

Since salvation comes through faith in Christ, the security of our salvation continues by faith in Christ.
Just as the Holy Spirit empowered us to believe in Christ, so he empowers us to continue believing in Christ.
God protects our faith relationship with him from any outside force irresistibly snatching us away from Christ or our faith, and he preserves us in salvation as long as we trust in Christ.
Arminians have differing views of whether Scripture teaches that believers can forsake faith in Christ and so perish, or whether God irresistibly keeps believers from forsaking their faith and therefore entering into eternal condemnation (as unbelievers).

both Calvinism and Arminianism came out of Reformed Protestantism
(as opposed to Anglican or Lutheran styles of Protestantism)

both of these theologies are foreign to the Catholic Church
though Calvinists have called me an Arminian before

There are similarities in both Arminianism and Calvinism to Catholicism and Orthodoxy. For example, a lot of Calvinist thought is based in Augustine. There are a lot of Arminians who draw from him and the church fathers before him.

And the two schools of thought are actually probably a lot closer than most of us think they are. But you have the Hyper Calvinist and those who are actually semi-pelagian like, and they butt heads and make it seem like the two are complete opposites, and only one is the true way of life. This is silly, because we all serve the Lord Jesus.

I scored high as an Arminian of course but I thought the questions were poorly conceived.

One question that bothered me most was phrased something to the effect that man still has enough good in him to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior. That is not in any way what arminian doctrine states. Arminianism teaches that man is totally corrupted by original sin but God's prevenient grace allowed free will to operate such that one can choose to believe in Christ.

Oops, sorry,

Calvinism

Total Depravity:
Sin has affected all parts of man. The heart, emotions, will, mind, and body are all affected by sin. We are completely sinful. We are not as sinful as we could be, but we are completely affected by sin.

Unconditional Election:
God does not base His election on anything He sees in the individual. He chooses the elect according to the kind intention of His will. without any consideration of merit within the individual. Nor does God look into the future to see who would pick Him. Also, as some are elected into salvation, others are not

Limited Atonement:
Jesus died to save the elect only. Though Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient for all, it was not efficacious for all.

Irresistible Grace:
When God calls his elect into salvation, they cannot resist. God offers to all people the gospel message. This is called the external call. But to the elect, God extends an internal call and it cannot be resisted. This call is by the Holy Spirit who works in the hearts and minds of the elect to bring them to repentance and regeneration whereby they willingly and freely come to God

Perseverence of the saints
You cannot lose your salvation. Because the Father has elected, the Son has redeemed, and the Holy Spirit has applied salvation, those thus saved are eternally secure and all the elect will persevere in the faith to the end

Arminanism

Human ability
Although human nature was seriously affected by the fall, man has not been left in a state of total spiritual helplessness. God graciously enables every sinner to repent and believe, but He does not interfere with man's freedom

Conditional Election
God's choice of certain individuals unto salvation before the foundation of the world was based upon His foreseeing that they would respond to His call. He selected only those whom He knew would of themselves freely believe the gospel.

General Atonement
Christ's redeeming work made it possible for everyone to be saved but did not actually secure the salvation of anyone. Although Christ died for all men and for every man, only those who believe on Him are saved

Resistable Grace
The Spirit calls inwardly all those who are called outwardly by the gospel invitation; He does all that He can to bring every sinner to salvation. But inasmuch as man is free, he can successfully resist the Spirit's call

Pereverence of some saints
Those who believe and are truly saved can lose their salvation by failing to keep up their faith

I did not take the quiz, however - given the above definition, my beliefs fall heavily into the Arminanism side.

Don't Catholics believe in works salvation?
lol EO's soteriology annoys me the most. "We're saved.. if God feels like it even though we have all this revelation. We're just such horrible wretches that God might betray his promises just to make surely sure we stay humble.

Well, as someone moving closer to becoming a Catholic, I reject both of these doctrines but I think Catholicism is probably more comfortable with Armianism. I scored 85% Armianism and 44% Calvinism...but yeah, really terrible wording.
