• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Perhaps a little early to start this thread yet, but s_gunter and I have both agreed to quit on the first day of Lent.

Have started to build up for it already, with the intention that by 1st March, I should be prepared for it.

I will offer one little bit of advice - give it to the Lord. Congragualtions on the choice you have made - a wise one but don't be too hard on the 'winding down faze' there is no right/wrong way of quitting so give it to the Lord and let His will be done. God bless and praying for a successful quit/lent.

My advice to you would be take it one moment at a time...hold on to the Lord with all your might and no matter what don't ever believe that you can't do it...You can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens you....If you ever just need to vent you can PM me anytime. I've been there and if I can help in anyway, I will...Keep the faith and may God bless you...

Andy I am so very happy to hear you are planning on quiting. :) I am here 100% to give you any support I can from over the net.

But I know you can do it, you just have to stay strong and keep God by your side. :)

I am here if you need me and I would love to help you through this journey.

OK.

Quit today.

Not had one since 10.15pm last night and now 3.40pm.

It is really hard.

Got some Nicotine gum but that tastes like sh*t

But just about hanging on at the moment.

I havn't got any ciggies, which helps (obviously), nor can I go out for any as I am at work.

Andy try and think of something else.

Chew regular gum

Eat chocolate

Talk to me every time you have a craving!

You have to have a safe thing

Find it and use it everytime you want a cigerate.

You are going to get very crabby and irritable the next two weeks, but after about two or three weeks without one entirely, you will feel amazing!!! Believe me!

COME ON ANDY!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

See I am even Cheering for you!!!

I just joined the forums today and saw this thread. I'm quitting for Lent too. Sometimes the cravings are bad and sometimes they are not. I'm donating most of what I would spend on smokes to a charity for Coptic orphans.

That helps keep me from buying smokes but it's a willpower struggle to not bum a smoke at work.

I have a personal devotion to St. Joseph so each time I have a bad craving I raise my mind to one of his four virtues and think about it for a bit. Those virtues are:

Fidelity to Grace (Open to God's action in his life)
Interior Life (focus on God)
Love for Mary
Love for Jesus

That and wintergreen lifesavers are helpful. I find I can inhale air through the lifesaver hole and somehow that lets me pass the craving.

Something else that is helping me is stepping outside to have my lifesaver just as if I was smoking. That lets me focus on the fresh air a bit.

I'll keep praying for everyone who is trying to quit. I'll offer a prayer whenever I have a bad craving myself, that should be a bunch of prayers :crossrc:

Hey there folks!!.... I seen where there was entry, finally so I thought I'd jump in here. I still smoke... would love to quit, but I have a tried a couple times before, and ended up bitin' everybody's head off for no reason. So, I'd alway's go back. I don't smoke as much as I did before tho. I'm down to about 1 pack a day now, from about 2 and a half.

But, I've also found that if I'm constantly busy... I don't have time to sit and puff away, I don't miss it at the at time. Question is.. how ya find stuff to keep ya busy for 18-20 hr's a day.

That is difficult. I usually buy a new video game for my free time since it keeps my hands moving. Reading works if you are really into the book, but if it gets at all boring you might smoke.

Knitting helped someone I know.

Any activity that occupies the hands seems to help. I know someone who made great progress by playing jacks whenever she wanted a smoke. Helps you feel a bit like a kid again too.

Count me in. I don't feel like my heart is totally into quitting, and I'm trying to psyche myself up. My lungs are begging for mercy, though, they hurt. I feel awful, and I know I need to quit. I can't workout without coughing every 2 minutes. I feel sorry for the people around me, cuz I'll turn into the Crypt Keeper without nicotine.
