CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Someone here predicted that this would be such a draw to wearing crucifixes that there would be a run on them, and their price would go up!

I definitely think that there will be greater interest in wearing crucifixes. It is through His death on the cross that we are saved. An empty cross, is just that. I'm greatful to be in a country where I can have one on right now, as I type this.

Some will, of course, and others will still see it as being too close to an unhealthy symbolism/idol worship. Maybe since I am a Catholic-turned-Methodist I have no problem with the crucifix. I wear my crucifix, my cross-and-flame, and my plain ol' cross as I see fit.Metanoia02 said:

How about a movie based on the Acts of the Apostles? Would that put the cross-and-flame in perspective for you? (the flame represents the Holy Spirit). Should I, instead, go for a crucifix and flame? When have we chased symbolism too far? No mere cross can encompass my feelings of gratitude at the sacrifice our Lord made for us. I will show my thanks by living a life that is pleasing to Him, and I will hit my knees.
I think that it comes down to the fact that no token symbol is enough to express my love, so I don't feel the need to "compete" with others regarding what I'm wearing around my neck.

It will, and it should. This didn't come out well in my first post, but too many P's are so focused on what they perceive to be borderline heresy (iconism) that they choose not to appreciate the crucifix for what it is, independent of what another denomination (i.e. Catholicism) thinks of it.
Unfortunately, knowing my argumentative personality, I think one thing that finally made me re-embrace the crucifix was knowing that it was offensive to many Mormons (not trying to start a fight, just stating my own experience).

I love Jesus of Nazareth. Some of the acting and realism isn't in Greatest Story in my opinion.
What I think we all want to see is the attention given to Christ's sacrifice and be moved. Moved so much that we have those images in our head the way the visual arts only can. Beyond imagination perhaps.

Here is my concern: If this movie goes over-board with the gore, the purpose of Jesus' death and resurrection may be lost on a significant portion of the movie-goers. There was an article by an Orthodox believer on this issue and (s)he explained quite eloquently that there is a reason that the Gospels don't go in-depth into explaining the sufferings that Christ endured. I wish I remembered the link to that article. Maybe Oblio can help us out.

I don't know. To be honest, it wasn't until recently that someone even clued me in on the fact that quite a few DVDs come as widescreen and fullscreen. I just went out and bought the one I could get my hands on.PeterPaul said:

I think that the gore Mel added to this movie will only be just enough to push you almost to the edge but not quite over it, at least that is how he explained it

I understand your concern, nyj, however my concern has been the opposite: that Christians are shocked and surprised to realize what Jesus DID suffer for us. They're appalled to think anyone would consider the importance of what He suffered so that all of us would have the chance to reconciled to God.nyj said:
People don't want to focus on that, and yet it's an important part of our deliverance as well as the Resurrection. People are focusing on the "feel good" aspect of everything without realizing that He paid OUR penalty.
And heaven knows Christians are in desperate need of a wake-up call right now.
