  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Two Questions.......

1. For anyone...........What church do you go to and how do you manage to conicide your believes with that of the church which you attend, what is it which makes you stay in the church you are in? I'm talking here about women vicars etc.

2. For those people who believe the KJV is the only Bible to follow and America is the only country which is saved by God...............I am curious only, Why do you believe in and follow a Bible which is written in, published in and Authrorised by a King of England and Scotland when you don't believe anyone outside America is Godly?

Please except my apoliogys if anything here is insulting to anyone, that is not my intention, I am just curious.

If I'm wrong, I'm thankful as I know that it is not a good view, but I have seen and read some things which do believe that, I mostly seem to see it connected with Landover Baptist Church, which I will admit I have only just heard of and don't know much about, but if I'm wrong then please correct me.

1) I still haven't found a Church I am 100% into yet. That said, I move a lot with my hubby's career so that doesn't help us to stay long anyhow.

2) My personal preference is for the NASB. Also, according to what I've seen in the Bible, Israel is the only country which is and will be saved by God.

I wonder why you see American's as thinking everyone else is unGodly? We have enough unGodly people of our own. No need to look outside of the country to find what is so prevalent here.

LOL Landover Baptist is a fake website created to lampoon fundamentalists!

It's actually very hilarious and sad at the same time because a lot of what they post is actually true beliefs of some people I know...

Landover Baptist Church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

 Very embrassed now:blush:
Put it down to being English, we don't hear of anything like that over here, it kept coming up on the search engine so I assumed it was real. Sorry.

That is Old Testament theology. Jesus said He had other sheep in other pastures in reference to the gentiles (all non-Jews). Also I think it was Paul but it could have been Jesus who also said that "there is no Greek, no Jew, no bond, no free, no male, no female..." meaning that those things (nationality, gender, etc) do not matter with respect to salvation.

You made an honest and quite reasonable error in mistaking landover, westboro baptist or any of whatever tiny minority of wackos are out there with Christianity in the USA as a whole or even fundamentalists like us. I hope to answer in a respectful and kind manner. We Christian fundamentalists probably get more "bad press" than any other group in modern times. As a result, we oft bristle at what are sincere qustions, confusing them with more of the same hate and absurd caricatures that are standard fare in any search engine.

I attend the PCA (Presbyterean Church in America) which expressly forbids women elders, both what we term ruling elders (elected representative men, only men, who vote on various matters) and Teaching Elders (pastors, preachers, vicars ect). Thus we follow what we believe are the straightfoward admonition of Scripture that in the Church no woman is to have authority over a man. I will not sit in a pew where a woman preaches officially from the pulpit. If a woman makes announcements, gives a lecture or testimony that is not directly the worship service, no problem. I of course do not agree 100%, in fact pretty much everybody agrees I am the resident gadfly and trouble maker. They all tell me when I miss Sunday school it's boring because people agree. The teachers, well all but one, want me in their classes beacuse I do so often, and loudly, disagree. So debate is welcome and encouraged. Unfortunately, there certainly are Churches were a coercive enforced rigidity is the norm, and many are fundamentalist. There is some truth in some of the caricatures and hate speech about fundamentalists. I am aware of Churches were women are not allowed to wear pants, which is absurd, and other things that well, are legalistic extra-Biblical traditions of men rather than an honest attempt to follow Scripture in it's plain meaning. For example, there are Churches here in America that follow the traditions of Scottish Kirks and ban all music from worship, singing modified Psalms a capella under the banner of "the regulative principle." This is patently absurd, for the Psalms themselves list many musical instruments, just read the last Psalm. How one can ignore the plain sense of Scripture, which says to bring instruments into the worship, and actually ban musical instruments is beyond my comprehension. Yet the majority picture it is nowhere near as we are portrayed. As a fundamentalist I dance, drink alcohol and occsionally curse (as do the writers of Scripture on occasion curse, BTW). Being a fundamentalist does NOT necesitate a scowl or a hatred of Science. I am retired from being a professor of medicinem and whaen a student there at my medical school Lawton Child, THE world authority on syphillitic disease of the eye, was also a fundamentalist and quite open about it. No we are not necessarily idiots, born a Cuban, Icertainly can dance and drink!

As to the KJV being the only or even best Bible, very few on this thread would hold that (I think only one). My favorite is also the NASB, but I go to the Greek and Hebrew often. However, there is this annoying strain of "KJV-onlys" among fundamentalists whose views I can not explain. A long time ago on this site we had "KJV only" wars, and they mostly all left. Again, there is some truth to the caricature of KJV thumping fundamentalists, but it is a minority.

Lastly, America the Godly nation. Again I doubt you get anybody here to agree. There as at the founding of this nation a very strong element of Puritanism, and they did in fact view this continent as "the new Canaan", would call indigenous Americans "Canaanites" and saw themselves as the "New Israel" whose duty it was to continue the Nation of Israel. Well, that dream died when they had teenagers, when they had to compromise and have their children be "half-way covenants." Look, MANY nations (all??) will be saved. Read the last couple of chapters of Revelations and you will see this clearly layed out. God will save a remnant from "all peoples and toungues" to populate the New Earth and New Jerusalem. That the USA made a more serious attempt at godlyness is debatable, very debatable. I personally think the USA did in fact behave on many occasions in a surprisingly godly fashion. How many world superpowers have conquered huge areas, turned around, returned them to the inhabitants, paid those that made war reparations and rebuilt their countries and then walked away? Did not the USA occupy Japan, write it's constitution, rebuilt her cities and then just leave it all to the Japanese? The same Japanese that attacked the USA without notice! Did the USA remain occupiers of western Europe as Russia of Eastern Europe? Did we demand colonies throughout the world of the losing powers of WWI? Does not even now the USA pay Native American nations, AND apologize frequently for the abuse the USA heaped upon the natives? Sure the USA did and does a great deal wrong. The aforementioned treatment of SOME f the native American, the slavery, the many times the USA destabilized various foreign Govt for economic gain and so on and so on. The USA is not a "godly nation," but I would put the historical record of my adoptive country up against any other in history that achieved world power status. Yet those days are long gone. I believe this country has turned a corner, and we are headed down a very dark path indeed. In any case, it is true that many Americans are a bit too ethnocentric. Sometimes we really go overboard in our patriotism, and there is no Scriptural warrant for it at all. Yet in your own country you have the British Israelites. Look up their beliefs, they are as messed up as the Puritans ever were.

I hope my tiny short answers have been helpful without being overbearing. If I had time I would answer in a more detailed manner, but for now this very brief post will have to do.

Many dispensationalists certainly do teach the error that only Israel will be saved as a country. As a dispensationalist who believes many countries will inhabit the New Earth, and that in the end all distinction between Jew and Gentile will be abolished through unity in Christ, obviously not all dispensationalists agree. DeacoDean is correct that "classical" dispys, such as the Scofield Bible do have that errant view.

It is also true that Fundamentalists were influenced by Dispensational teachings.

And today, one of the leading and most active Dispensationalist is the televangelist John Hagee.

A good number of Dispensationalists were in fact, considered Fundamentalists:

E.Y. Mullins, Cyrus I. Scofield, J. Graham Machen, Curtis L. Laws, William B. Riley, John R. Stanton, Clarence E. Macartney, William Jennins Bryan just to name a few.

Fundamentalists used to hold at least one dispensational teachings.

In fact, when the 1878 C.o.F. for Fundamentalists came out, it stated:

The premillennial Second Coming of Christ.

1878 Niagra Bible Conference Confession

There were, and I still am, Fundamentalists who hold to the premillennial second coming of Christ.

God Bless

Till all are one.

Also, according to what I've seen in the Bible, Israel is the only country which is and will be saved by God.
Israel is the only nation God ever chose but he chose it for the purpose of bringing salvation to all of the other nations of the earth.
In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and Assyria will come into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyria, and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians.

In that day Israel will be the third with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, whom the LORD of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel my inheritance.”

At times you have misunderstood my playful bantering with you as a personal attack. This has been more my fault than yours, and a common problem I cause. DeaconDean, I agree with every statemnet you made there, and I too am a premillenialist, though a mid-tribulationist, I too look for a rapture out of the worst of it. I also call myself a Dispensationalist, though not in the "classical" camp of Darby/Scofield.

My point is that while MOST modern fundamentalists in the USA are Dispys and vice versa is a true statement; there exists a significant minority. I have been a member of the Presby-PCA denomination for over a decade. There I am the minority among Bible literalists who, while they may not like the label "fundamentalists" clearly are such in their high view of Scripture. Yet they are steadfast in their Covenental Theology. Believe me, i am a major thorn in their side during Sunday School, though they keep encouraging me to disagree with them.

Also, just last night I stumbled upon a relatively new hermeneutical system called New Covenetal Theology, which is half way between Dispy and 1700's style Covenant Theology. Semms this has been what I have believed for about 25 years, and just recently it's got a name. I may well stop referring to myself as a "non-classical" or "progressive" dispy and adopt this term for what has been my hermeneutics for at least 25 years. I do not recall anyone teaching this to me (here I speak as a fool, since of course all of us are under the tutelage of the Holy Ghost). It just seemed "Biblical" to me.

You know, for the most we agree on most everything, and perhaps, my post was misunderstood.

Let me explain. I quoted your post for one reason:

Many dispensationalists certainly do teach the error that only Israel will be saved as a country.

I only wanted to give background as to why some Fundamentalists believe as they do.

It was not to correct anything you said, only for clairification purposes only.

If you wish to get technical, I would be considered a Dispensationalist except that I disagree with the Dispensationalist position that God has two plans of salvation, one for Gentiles who will be spared the tribulation, and one for the Jews who will be saved during the millennial era.

God's plan for all mankind from the beginning of time until the end of time is to save them.

And it is also sad that many still hold to the view that Romans 9-11 were meant only for the Jews.

BTW: I inheirted my Dispensational views from my Grandfather who was a Presbyterian.

Now ain't that strange, somebody who held to a covenantal theology who also holds to dispensationalism.

God Bless

Till all are one.

Well gentleman, we may have some common ground after all.

Suffice it to say that in the 'early' days after I received Christ as Saviour, I was taught dispensationalism. The problem I ran into of course, was justifying salvation in the OT by faith and works, when the Bible clearly taught otherwise.

My conclusion after much study alone with the Holy Spirit as my guide was that while there are in fact 7 dispensations, there are also covenants that go hand in hand with them. Salvation has always been by grace through faith. There are both correct, and incorrect points to both dispensationalism and covenant theology.

It is my personal belief that major schools of thought get into a situation where they develop a type of spiritual tunnel vision that only allows them to see those things which they were initially taught. May they yield to the HS and receive a fresh blessing from the Word!
