Hello everyone. I needed some guidance on speaking in tongues.

My dad told me I was saved when I was a kid, and that the Holy Ghost was given to me too and I started speaking in tongues instantly during church (I don't remember this).

I'm 30 now, but the last 20 years I rarely spoke in tongues and fell away from Jesus. The last year I had this urge to serve the Lord and up until about a month ago the urge was at its highest where I just wanted to stop sinning completely and go to Him, so I did.

Now I just wanted to get some guidance from others about speaking in tongues, and your experiences. I started recently, once very late at night for about 3-4 hours during a fight I've been having with the devil, and the next morning/afternoon I felt awesome and healed until the attacks came on again later that day, where speaking again didn't seem to help comfort me. Both times I forced myself to speak.

So I'm just wondering, do I force myself to speak? I was told that the Holy Spirit isn't going to speak for you and you have to force words to come out, so that's what I remembered to start doing.

Or am I suppose to feel something, like an emotion or a presence and then I just suddenly have the urge to blurt stuff out? Watching old Kenneth Hagin videos, his members acted very differently, like you could tell there was a presence or something, or that they were forced to speak or let the Spirit speak. Not sure how to describe it, but it was different than what I'm doing.

Am I not experiencing certain things because I'm so carnal minded still? Do I continue to force myself to speak a few hours or more every day until I start feeling an emotion, a presence, or comfort? I was told this builds me up spiritually. Should I speak louder? Fast or slow?

How do I know it's not me speaking gibberish. I'm going by faith right now that it's not since I can't perceive anything else, such as an emotion, an urge, or the energy that I've seen others have. I don't think I'm mimicking anyone either, for example my dad sounds different than me, plus I remember I spoke different words years ago compared to now.

Sorry for the long post, it's just that I don't remember my first experience and how it felt, but I know I never lost the gift of tongues, I'm just not sure how to use it properly now I guess.

Like, if I feel I'm consciously slowing down my speaking, or controlling what to say because I keep saying the same things over and over so I create new words and sounds, then I don't know if it's still the Holy Ghost or not. Or if I should keep saying the same things over and over until something changes from there.

We do not have exact English words for the various feelings you are trying to describe, and that makes it very difficult to answer you. 45 years experience tells me the best course of action is to start in a known tongue (English) and repeat over and over if you must, something like "Praise you, Jesus", "I worship you Almighty Lord"....etc. things like that. Do this until you feel the resistance to this overcome, and then try the tongues.

There is no need to force yourself to speak in tongues. Don't worry about how fast you speak or what you say. There's different kinds of "speaking in tongues," and none of them are magic ways to drive Satan off. It is an overflow of the Holy Spirit in you, and anecdotal evidence is that it is a way of worshiping God. You can choose to speak in tongues if you want—with faith. You don't know what you are saying, but trust that God will use it as he pleases (like he does any worship or prayer).

If you have given control of every area of your life to Jesus, then you are born again in Christ with all the rights of sons of God. You can command Satan to depart from you with the power of Jesus' name (but don't ever dialogue with Satan; he might say something that makes you want to respond—ignore it). You can also pray and ask God to deliver you from spiritual oppression. You can remind yourself of the Truth (such as God's promises of help and protection), quote those or other Scripture, and thank and worship God. I suggest you do all of these if you are under an acute spiritual attack. Focus on Jesus, not the attack, because it is He who will deliver you, not your own power.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17, 1984 NIV)

You cannot 'force' the Holy Spirit to speak. You must ask Him for guidance. He will look after you if only you allow Him to do so. When you begin to grow closer to him, He will begin to grant you the urge to pray in tongues. When He does, it naturally flows. It is not something that can be forced. If you try to force it, the outcome will be gibberish with no meaning. It will be pointless. I urge you to read into it. Find scripture on the matter. 1 Corinthians covers it quite a bit. Same with 2 Corinthians. I urge you to meditate on these scriptures and before reading ask God to show you how you may use these scriptures to improve your relationship with Him. Once you have these answers, act on them. You must choose to do so. Like any other relationship, the one you share with the Holy Spirit requires effort on both ends. If you have any further questions or concerns, my inbox is always open. Good luck! I believe in you :)

Speaking in tongues is a wonderful gift and the HS speaks for you directly to the Father and He knows what to say. You never have to force it, after sometime it will be second nature and just flows out of your mouth.

Ok. I had some help from another poster named Oscarr too that mentioned to just keep working on it.

This video helps too, thank you. The reason I ask is because I think I'm so spiritually suppressed over the course of 15-20 years that I don't really know what I'm doing or getting myself in to. I was such a "worldly" Christian that when I wanted to actually stop living the way I was for good and seek God for good, I was too spiritually stunted towards God that I was unequipped to deal with mental attacks or expect the HS to comfort me when I had doubt that He even would, but I forced myself to either speak in tongues anyway while trying to stand on scripture.

Speaking of that video, it encouraged me when that pastor said it took him a couple of months before he really felt it, then I look down at the comments and someone else said it took them "a couple of months too, almost like the HS was the seed and speaking in tongues was like pouring water over the seed."

My problem currently is wanting to speak in tongues all the time, instead of reading the bible. But I know the word is like seed as well, and the word of God takes precedence, especially against these mental attacks. But man, I'm really eager to just speak to God all the time.

I'm starting to understand this whole "seedtime and harvest" that God uses.

You can speak in tongues out loud, you can speak in tongues in your head. You can speak in tongues very quickly you can also speak in tongues slowly syllable by syllable. Try those different approaches, and you will gain more confidence over doing it. You can sing in tongues rap in tongues, speak in tongues with different accents etc. Speaking in tongues is a true blessing and a lot of fun. I especially do it when I am going through a hard time and need a spiritual boost and I get one every time. Like I'll sit down somewhere while feeling defeated or down on myself and start speaking in tongues either out loud or in my mind it doesn't really matter, and I feel just feel this big boost emotionally and I just have to stand up and I then no longer feel downtrodden over whatever was keeping me down. I wish I spoke in tongues more than I do. Waiting till you feel like crap before speaking in tongues probably isn't a smart idea. But speaking in tongues in the morning and before bed and any time during the middle of the day when you feel like it or need it seems like the best plan.

Alright I'll keep it up. I usually speak on my way to work and back, sometimes during work if I'm not listening to a sermon or teaching. I'm going to practice speaking it in my head too because I've never thought about doing that, will be great before going to bed.

Yes reading the word is very important. The word is your sword to fight the enemy that attacks us, esp in our mind, thats his playground. I bought an audio of the bible and play it non stop, even at night while sleeping. Satan hates the word of God and at the same time when you hear the word played over and over, it kinda gets stuck in your head and you memorize it alot better.

I think I'll try that! I have an audio version too but just never thought of playing it while I sleep. Lately I've been playing christian music or someone's teachings but it's probably better to play an audio of the word like you said.

Go to the home page, click on Inbox, then conversations, and there is a button "start a new conversation". CF no longer has "PMs". It is now "conversations", but it is the same basic function.

Speaking in tongues is perfect prayer and perfect praise. But don't forget to praise Him in your understanding as well. I look for things to praise God for. Keep focusing on God and praising Him instead of looking under rocks for the devil, and soon you will not be dwelling on what the devil is doing, because he probably ran for the hills as the light of God was filling you through your praise. Also, remember to listen. Speaking to God is not just one way. When I am in need, He will interrupt my thoughts and tell me what to pray, I pray what He said, and it comes to pass.
