I thought the same thing but the Wiki article doesn't mention Rh. I also double checked with an AI which said Rh wasn't mentioned as a reason for the blood tests.

OB
Well, we're all showing our age. I vaguely remember in 8th grade biology or something like that blood tests were for Rh. Maybe it was to avoid discussing STDs... I mean, VD.

So then, my first thought was why are we still doing it and was reminded of a few years ago it was running amuck among elders, ugh
Frisky senior citizens.... 55+ living is leading to sin, I tell you, SIN!!!

According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on October 8, 2019, the number of cases of gonorrhea rose 164 percent among Americans age 55 and older between 2014 and 2018, while cases of syphilis rose 120 percent in this population, and chlamydia rose 86 percent.

The short answer is no.

US state laws requiring blood tests were progressively repealed from the 1970s. It was never worldwide although tests were required in some European countries. Some middle eastern countries still require a test,

The tests were basically looking for a range of diseases.

See Wiki link below for details.

OB
I wonder if their readings are higher in countries that don't enforce it. It would be interesting to know

That's pretty sickening! I was ashamed of the elders here. Found highest in homes for the aged. Made me wonder if rape was involved in some cases as elders are fragile. They would probably cover it up

I thought one of the reasons was to identify Rh incompatibility. in parents to be.
It seems to me weren't they checking for cousins and nearer relatives at one time?

I've always said that if I had had girls, instead of a boy, I would have named them Syphilis and Chlamydia. I think they're lovely names.

Instead, I had a son named Gonorrhoea. ^_^

Blood test for blood type and the rh factor are routine, for both parents, during pregnancy.

This may be where the confusion comes from.

OB
Why does rh matter?

Syphilis is actually a boy's name, albeit a fictional boy. I have to agree, though, they are lovely sounding names. My parents for some reason named me AIDS, but I had it changed in the early '80's.

That's a disturbing thought. I know some young people are into elderly folks specifically.. I'm sure some of those types prey on such people.

In this case it was the male and females in the same facility.
