• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Questions for family members of an addict

These questions are for anyone that has a child or loved one that has been in addiction for over a decade and is still in the addiction.

1 What has helped you the most to adjust to such pain?
2 How has it affected your spiritual life?
3 How much have you recovered; 50%, 75%, 100%?

1 What has helped you the most to adjust to such pain?
God first....gives me peace,comfort & calmness
Being in AA & NA programs has helped me tremendously to understand.
Al-anon has helped me also.
Knowing I'm not alone, support from church, and friends that have been there are help also.
2 How has it affected your spiritual life?
It has made me a stronger person.I am closer to God because of the addict.
3 How much have you recovered; 50%, 75%, 100%?
There is no recovery from it,its a one day at a time thing,Letting go and letting God.
And the comfort knowing God is doing for us what we can not do for oueselves.God is in control.
You must really believe this.

God is the only one that can change him/her.

Acceptance,and finding help for yourself.
 praying for you & yours

Just love them though it.........

I know that is the right answer but it is hard to do sometimes. Thank you for saying that, I need to be reminded.

Crises seem the only way to keep me looking to God. Sad but true.

I think that I am in better shape now than I was 3-4 years ago. Doing everything that I could, giving 100%, putting my hope ONLY in God and moving in the direction of acceptances what I think helped me improve in mind, body, and spirit.

Just like you, seeing and talking to recovering addicts is a big boost to my hope

Again, thank you both for responding. It is encouraging to read about someone in my shoes that has survived and has good advice and still hopeful.

Thx for your reply....
that all God asks us to do is try.
Leave the rest to Him.

God is surely...
Doing for us what we can not do for ourselves.

Praying for you :prayer:

1 What has helped you the most to adjust to such pain?

For the last two years I have studied "Giant Slaying 101" - I, like David choose to focus on my redeemer, rather then the issue. The issue will taunt me tease me, call me bad names. WHATEVER. God's will is for that giant to drop. That is what I choose to dwell on.

2 How has it affected your spiritual life?
It used to be beat me unmercilessly - now I have focus. I want nothing more then Jesus and my destiny.

3 How much have you recovered; 50%, 75%, 100%?
I would day 80 to 90 %
