• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi, I have a couple of questions for ppl who are aspies:

-Do you have terrible memory?
-Are you very clumsy?
-Do you have trouble talking and expressing yourself?
-Do you have impulse control problems?
-Do you have a regular sleeping pattern?
-Are you an insomniac?
-Are you easily startled to the point where you have heart palpitations(increased heart rate)?

Just curious. Just want to know about your experiences.

-Are you easily startled to the point where you have heart palpitations(increased heart rate)?

Just curious. Just want to know about your experiences.

1. At times. It depends on what the memory in question is, how I'm feeling, how well I'm rested, and other factors.
2. Not as much as I used to be. I was very clumsy and uncoordinated when I was younger. Not so much now, though I do have moments still where I'll roll onto my ankle when I walk. Never a good experience. D:
3. Nope. If anything, I express myself all too well to the point of being blunt. I still have a bit of a stutter and trip over my words, but it's not as bad as when I was younger.
4. Only when I'm angry. When I'm angry, my verbal impulse controls go to zero and I typically say what's on my mind. It also depends on the impulse as well.
5. I don't. I basically sleep when I'm ready to. I do need to be on a sleep schedule, though. I'm in college and it would benefit me if I did have a consistent sleeping schedule.
6. At times. My medicine usually helps with my insomnia 99% of the time. Of course, if I did have insomnia, it was my own fault. I tried staying up for 24 - 48 hours a few times just for laughs. Never again. <__<
7. Not really. I don't startle easily. I don't get angry as easily as I used to be or frustrated or startled when I encounter stimulus overload. Learning coping strategies helped me in that regard.

Memory? Often photographic & auditory, but very poor with faces.

Clumsy? Not overly so. I was in cross-country in high school. Not always the best posture...

Talking/Expression? Okay, if I know the topic and person; more cautious if I can't get a read on the person.

Impulse Control? I used to react very quickly to troubling first impressions. I still do on the inside. Now, I wait for my second impression, since I have misinterpreted motives before. James 1:19 says, "Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger."

Sleeping Pattern? Irregular

Insomniac? Only when I feel like there is unfinished business. Otherwise no.

Easily Startled? Not usually.

-Do you have terrible memory? I have an incredible photographic memory. If i see something I will remember it in great detail for a real long time. If its something I am told, the memory isn't so great.
-Are you very clumsy? I never saw myself as clumsy, but my wife would say I am very clumsy. She'd probably know better.
-Do you have trouble talking and expressing yourself? yes. If asked a personal question it can take me hours to process an answer.
-Do you have impulse control problems? Actually the complete opposite. I logically think everything through to the smallest detail. Everything is logically thought through and analyzed before acting upon something. (a pretty good trait in the engineering field.)
-Do you have a regular sleeping pattern? Yes.
-Are you an insomniac? no.
-Are you easily startled to the point where you have heart palpitations(increased heart rate)? Yes for sudden abrupt noises. Like a loud car or motorcycle going down the street can startle me out of my chair and take a bit to calm back down. Its just for sudden and abrupt things. If I know its coming and/or it comes slowly, then no.

Oh yeah. Thank you for asking. I enjoyed reading others responses as well.

Sure, no problem Moe!

Okay, I have some more questions to ask you guys:

-Which hand is your dominant hand?
-Were you a quiet baby?
-How close to term were you born?(e.g. preemie, at term, post term)

Right-handed,
AFAIK, neither notably quiet or notably loud,
Probably, at term; not informed otherwise

-Which hand is your dominant hand?
Right handed.
-Were you a quiet baby?
Very very quiet. I would generally only make a fuss if there was too much activity in the room. If left alone, I would never cry. I really only spoke to four people before third grade. Very quiet. Almost non-verbal.
-How close to term were you born?(e.g. preemie, at term, post term)
I was about a week early, which for all intents and purposes is considered 'at term.' 10 lbs on the nose. Big Ole Boy!

1) Right handed.
2) According to my mom I wasn't. At least I think that's what she said. I'll call her later today and ask to make sure.
3) I was about at term.

-Do you have terrible memory?

Only for people. Like most people with an ASC, I don't have a people-recognising centre in my brain, so information about people is harder to find.

-Are you very clumsy?

Yes, because I'm dyspraxic as well (1 in 3 of us is)

-Do you have trouble talking and expressing yourself?

Yes. Was mostly non-verbal until my 20s, now I talk a lot but miss so much of the 'context' because I can't see the body language and eye contact etc, so can be really undiplomatic or forget to say really important things to people. I can still become non-verbal at times when stressed.

-Do you have impulse control problems?

not really.

-Do you have a regular sleeping pattern?

yup, I'm regularly awake when I don't want to be!

-Are you an insomniac?

Yes

-Are you easily startled to the point where you have heart palpitations(increased heart rate)?

Yes

-Do you have terrible memory?
No

-Are you very clumsy?
No

-Do you have trouble talking and expressing yourself?
I express myself a lot better if I have some time to think about my reply.

-Do you have impulse control problems?
Few

-Do you have a regular sleeping pattern?
I go to sleep within 15 mins of going to bed. Sleep well for 6 hours.

-Are you an insomniac?
No

-Are you easily startled to the point where you have heart palpitations(increased heart rate)?
No ... I don't react ... I think about the danger before I react. So I'm slower than most people and this could be bad.

Interesting variety of responses we have here...
Of course, Aspies all have different personalities and the autistic spectrum allows for great variety as well. I'll preface my response by saying that I was diagnosed in the intersection of Asperger's and hyperlexia, with a few complications.

-Do you have terrible memory?
I sometimes joke that I have a tape recorder in my head with broken buttons. I can replay entire songs or conversations in my head, but it doesn't work very well when I'm nervous.

-Are you very clumsy?
Not really, though I can appear to be. If you try to give me a high-five, my reaction to it will be slow because I won't see it coming. (I'm very bad at reading body language.) On the other hand, I have excellent balance and motor control. I have competed in fencing (sword-play) and precision motorcycle riding. It's probably worth noting here that I'm partially paralyzed on my left side. I have done these things with one arm and my left leg is mostly numb.

-Do you have trouble talking and expressing yourself?
It depends on the topic and the situation. I struggle greatly with expressing my emotions and with understanding the emotions of others. If the topic is more factual, especially an area in which I have expertise, I usually express myself with ease and can make myself understood to a wide variety of audiences. This is probably due, at least in part, to my hyperlexic traits. Like many hyperlexics, I have odd reading habits. I tend to read technical manuals and dictionaries.

-Do you have impulse control problems?
It depends on the situation. I do have a tendency to say what's on my mind, but I'm aware of that, so I watch for it and try to bite my tongue. I also find it difficult to resist pursuing a problem or idea that has caught my interest. On the other hand, I'm very deliberate about most other choices.

-Do you have a regular sleeping pattern?
Usually

-Are you an insomniac?
When my mind starts chasing an idea or problem, I will probably stay awake thinking about it. This can last for days. I may also have to be reminded to eat during those times.

-Are you easily startled to the point where you have heart palpitations(increased heart rate)?
It depends on the situation. When I'm working on an idea or problem, I tend to hyperfocus. If something manages to interrupt that, I might be startled...or I might be highly annoyed. On the other hand, I am often calm in situations that cause others to panic.

I hope this helps to answer your questions. More importantly, I hope it raises further questions. :)

To answer your follow-up questions...

-Which hand is your dominant hand?
Left, though my left arm is now paralyzed.

-Were you a quiet baby?
Mostly, though I learned to speak at a very early age.

-How close to term were you born?(e.g. preemie, at term, post term)
I was at term, though I was not breathing when I was born. The doc told my parents I would have serious brain damage if I lived.

-Are you flatfooted(to some degree)?
No, but my brother is. He is, however, neurotypical (not on the autistic spectrum).

As I went back through the thread, some responses prompted further thought, especially Moe's...

My memory is pretty much the opposite of Moe's, it seems. My visual memory is very poor. However, I do readily grasp the meanings in charts and symbols, and I remember the meanings. I remember having to fill in the blanks in charts on tests (Thomas Gilbert's behavior engineering model is one that comes to mind). That was very difficult for me to do, though I can explain the model verbally, and I can represent the information visually in other ways. I also tend to remember the readings on instruments that I look at. I can tell you what the odometer and fuel guage in any of our vehicles read the last time I looked at them.

Like Moe, I tend to think through everything in the smallest detail. My wife often has to tell me I'm overanalyzing things.

Loud noises rarely bother me, however. It's the quiet ones I find irritating. The buzz of the lights at work drives me up the wall, but I have noise-canceling headphones. I put those on and crank up the music, and the problem is solved. Similarly, loud motorcycles are soothing to me. Visual "noise" bothers me greatly, though. My phone at work has a very large red light that blinks when I miss a call or have a voicemail. I've told my boss that the Do Not Disturb function is a complete waste, as the thing still disturbs me with its stupid blinking.

Something you haven't really touched on, but may find interesting...
I'm very sensitive to context. It is important to me that things are in the right place and/or the right order. Sometimes, I find it amusing when they aren't, but I mostly find it annoying. On the bright side, that makes me virtually immune to certain types of advertising, especially what I call "smiling people ads." They consist of people with big smiles on their faces, usually while interacting with a product or service. I often make comments to my wife like "there is no way I'd be smiling like that while paying bills online." The problem with the ad is that the smile seems out of context to me, and the effect is much the same as fingernails on a chalkboard.

Are you cross dominant (use one hand/side more, but do at least one major activity, such as writing with the other)?
I used to be. Shoot, I used to be able to write forward with one hand and backwards with the other at the same time. My left arm is paralyzed now, though.

Also, are you dyspraxic?
Maybe in some situations. I have practiced a number of martial arts, including judo and fencing, without difficulty. On the other hand, I struggle to coordinate my movements with a rhythm or with another person.

I have another question to pose regarding handedness: are you cross dominant (use one hand/side more, but do at least one major activity, such as writing with the other)?
No. I was ambidextrous as a child but the right side won out over the long run.

Also, are you dyspraxic?
When it comes to language or motor control, no.
When it comes to body movement and coordination. yes. All the parts of my body don't seem to like to go in the same direction at the same time. For instance, I ran track in high school and college, coach would make us do jumping jacks to warm up. I physically can not do jumping jacks and still can't. My arms and legs won't do those things simoultaneously. Its the weirdest thing. Everybody got a laugh out of it every day. Some one I trusted said it was a good friendly laugh, so I was happy to entertain them everyday.

I'm not sure if this qualifies. I am right-handed on almost every function, but my left hand is more stable when bicycling one-handed.

Also, are you dyspraxic?
I don't think so, but I do have to put a lot more conscious effort in order to maintain good posture.
