Questions for a Newbie.

Good Evening Folks,

I have been reading posts this evening and have a few questions. First, why are Baptists and Anabaptists linked together on the same boards? From my experiences most Baptist beliefs are quite different from historical Anabaptism. (IE: The tenants of The Schleitheim Confession.) And are much closer to mainstream protestantism. (Allthough it does appear that Liberal Mennonites have become much closer to liberal Methodists.)

Second, are there any Conservative Anabaptists here that hold to the tenants and Doctrine of the Earlly Anabaptists.

Third, Are there any Conservative Baptists here that believe that would tend to live out the literal teachings of Christ and the Apostles, and do not tend to write off scripture as cultural or historical. IE: Non-resistant, modest dress, headcoverings, Women do not teach men, separation from the world, etc....

In other words, how is this board different from the other protestant boards?

As you may have guessed, I am a very conservative fellow, who tends to side with Anabaptism. I am, however very supportive of the few conservative Baptists left out there.

I must say, I do indeed know a liberal Baptist. He doesn't post here, but he's clearly a liberal, and last I checked, he was a Southern Baptist. He's gonna stay Baptist even if he eventually abandons the SBC.

As well as a Liberal Presbyterian, and a Liberal Charismatic and a Liberal Non_Denominationalist... then I studied the Bible...

Yes I do. I see a major problem with denominations of any sort to be quite honest. I also see an even bigger problem with universal relativeism, accepetnce of sin in the Church , culturalism within theology and worldliness in the Body.

It is not my intention to be a heresy hunter. Nor is it my intention to bring division. It was merely my desire to seek information as to whom frequents this board (and what type of Christian). I will note that my few questions caused you to lash out at a complete stranger. I will take note of that.

Timothy, I'm sorry for the first line of my post. I can see how you, as a newbie, took it as a personal attack. I could have filled you in on the history of how this question has been discussed to death and how unwelcome the Mennonites and Quakers were made to feel without beginning with a remark revealing my personal dismay.

We do have a lot in common, but the things we share apparently are not the things that are most important to most Baptists. Of all the Congregation fora on CF, this is where Mennonites and Quakers fit best. So, from our POV, your question seems like another statement implying that Mennonites and Quakers should have no home forum here on CF.

You had no way of knowing your question was picking at an old wound. I said "ouch" to let you know. I did not mean to "lash out" at you, personally.

The fact is, Mennonites and Quakers would like to have a home forum here at CF. The Baptists finally decided to go along with the administration and tolerate us. Another group, the Brethren, were assigned to Semper Reformanda, and weren't wanted there, so we invited them to join us here, also, since we share much with Brethren, too. I think in welcoming another group that had been made to feel unwelcome where they were assigned, we went a long way in healing our own discord. That was one of our finest hours as a forum. We also invited the Salvation Army, but they were also welcomed in Wesley's Parish, so we blessed them on their way. I've noticed that some Evangelical Free members don't feel quite at home with the non-denoms. I think the Scandinavian free churches also share more with us than with the non-denoms, so I wish we could include Covenant and E Free, too.

To answer your question more directly, there are some things about our ecclesiology and our history all the groups here share. Probably more importantly, we all love the Bible and take discipleship seriously. With the possible exception of some Quakers (who could not be here because they also don't accept the Nicene Creed) all of us take discipleship very, very seriously, even those you label "liberal." These are the things we share. Although we respect the Baptists who feel as you do, we do not wish to become "homeless" here at CF, and beg you to accept us.

I put moderate baptist.. because as far as most's baptist churches I've been to I'm moderate in comparison. I am happily labled consertive to the rest of the world.

I thought I was a very conservative Christian (in a Baptist church) until I came here. I believe in following Scripture and that it is literal unless there are plausible and credible reasons to think it is cultural/ historical. Until I hear further revelation from God, I do not believe in female preachers, but I do think that it is fine for women to speak in church and participate in all facets of discussion since women are now privy to education in our society. I am not a KJV-O, which also puts me in the moderate category. I also enjoy all types of music, including "new song" and "spiritual song". Meaning, I enjoy praise and worship music. So, I guess that puts me in a moderate category. I also believe in moderation when it comes to alcohol. I understand the health aspects of wine and do not believe that Scripture denies us of this, except in certain circumstances. This also puts me in the moderate category.

I definitely do not consider myself liberal because of my strict adherence (or attempted adherence, as I am FAR from perfect) to Scripture.

RFE = "request for edit." I was asked to edit my post, which you quoted, so the part of your post that quoted and responded to mine was also deleted.

I hope this doesn't count against me as a violation of Rule 7. Around here we're really not supposed to talk about anything the moderators do in their capacity as moderators, so protocol would be for you to send a PM to the moderator who edited your post and ask him.
