I have never been particularly religious, however lately I had a spiritual experience that I can't quite make sense of.

I have this christian friend, who I often talk to about religion and spiritual awakening. usually we don't get hugely in depth to our conversations, but this time it was different, She told me she had holy spirit, and that it was strong and she wanted to show me. she then touched my hand and I felt something like an electric shock running from my palm through my entire body. It was very intense, and took me totally by surprise.

I know virtually nothing about religion, and I have no idea what happened to me, but I would like to know more. Is this a common thing/how does it happen?

I had a similar experience in a buddhist temple a year ago also, but not nearly as strong. Please excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge, I am genuinely curious.

MOD HAT ON

ylime, I'm going to move your thread to the Exploring Christianity section. Your topic is perfectly suited for that area. Christian Forums is a pretty big place but you'll get used to it and understand the way it's laid out pretty quickly :)

Be very careful. Christianity is built on faith, not fleshly experiences. Real Christianity is grounded in Biblical truth. In fact, the New Testament is loaded with warnings against straying from the truth in the Bible with good reason.

You don't really know, but we are in the last gasp of Satan's reign on earth. It is the end of the age and there is a massive delusion afoot in Christianity drawing people away from the faith with lying signs and wonders that Jesus warned about 2,000 years ago.

I was actually a part of this movement, and God mercifully drew me out of it and showed me the truth.

The supernatural feelings are not the Holy Spirit, they are demonic. There's a serious spiritual war raging over the souls of people.

If you want to be a Christian, I strongly suggest you disregard this friend as she is likely a part of this very wrong movement. The truth is found in the Bible if you want to find it.

Christianity is built on faith in Jesus' work of the cross to free us from the penalty of sin, faith in Jesus' resurrection life and power of His Holy Spirit to free us from the power of sin, and a life dedicated to growing in the knowledge of God by studying His word, simple prayer, and having a humble, teachable heart before God that recognizes He has the truth and we need to change to conform to His truth which has clearly been defined in His word.

You can start this all up on your own, you don't need to go to a church, though fellowship with other authentic believers is a part of it, too. Just be careful where you go should you chose to follow Jesus. Many churches out there are completely off the rails and headed to the pit just as much as any unsaved person.

Was it anything like this?

This is pathetic. This is not evangelism in any sense of the term. He's peddling an experience and tacking Jesus' name onto it. What about repentance? What about the forgiveness of sins and following Jesus?

It's all too common among charismatic/Pentecostal churches today, but it's not of God. It's wicked. It's witchcraft and it happens when people unwittingly submit to people who are a part of a hypocritical, insincere movement pretending to represent Jesus.

For more information, check this video. It lays out how so-called Christian ministries are using witchcraft to lead people into supernatural experiences and then heap up disciples which become mind-controlled slaves that tithe and support ministries:

I think what you felt was not the Holy Spirit but the manifestation of a very different (likely demonic) spirit. The Holy Spirit manifests primarily through powerful conviction of sin and the illumination of the truth of God's word, not electric shocks. When the Holy Spirit is truly at work, repentance, and confession of sin, and reconciliation happens, not weird sensations.

While I certainly don't want to put you off from exploring Christianity further, I'm going to go ahead and say that this--almost certainly--wasn't an act of the divine. I'm not going to try and discredit your experience as an experience, but I try to remind people that the human brain is a very powerful organ, and it can do a wonderful job of fooling us.

I try to remind people that the Christian religion isn't based on individual experiences--though, again, I'm not trying to discredit all experiences--Christianity is not the religion about one's personal experience with God, but the public work of God in Jesus Christ in real human history.
