I want to know more about it. Because read a book about the Holy Spirit. And it talks about the ways of the tongues. The first word I remember was avulnee. When I was learning on how to listen to the tongues. I hear that word most often. The e carries strongly. The other word was akwaylu. But it's a name if it's spelled Akwalu. It's a name in Thailand. lol

Does you mouth every speak names out of no where without your control. Just minutes ago it was akata. Which means fox in africa. Does the Holy Spirit teach you these things?

Lol....speaking in tongues is very important! It's by far the most important gift and the only gift that we control. The other nine gifts are done at the holy spirits will. There is "gifts of tongues" which always should accompany someone who has the interpretation of tongues and there is the speaking in tongues which we control by just opening our mouths lol. The reason why working in tongues is vital shows clearly on the day of Pentecost when that was the first gift that God gave which speaks of it's importance! Another reason why is that it's a perfect prayer and only the holy spirit and God know what is being said so don't even bother about learning the words lol. We should speak in tongues as much as possible because without you knowing you're prophesying your future and praying for others that dont't even know about. When we pray in our native language we sometimes miss the mark and there is always a hint of selfishness in our prayers, but when we pray in tongues the holy spirit prays exactly what needs to be done and I promise you'll see miracles happen and things process faster in your life. The devil will try to tell you it's gibberish and you might see a lot of bad things happen first because he's trying to stop you, but then that's how you know tongues is VERY effective! Tongues is a weapon against the devil too and notice when you speak in tounges how much better you begin to feel. At first it seems like a lot of work but don't ever guit! Paul said himself he prays in tongues more than anyone and the fact that the devil doesn't know what you're saying is also a added bonus lol.

Go to itbn.org and look at Joseph Prince sermons on tongues and you'll see how the devil has convinced people not to use this gift. To reciece this gift just ask God and reciece by faith and just start uttering...the spirit will lead and remember you can start and stop whenever you want to.

All spiritual gifts come from the Holy spirit.
All...

It is one and the same Spirit, distributing as he decides to each person, who produces all these things. 1 Cor:12-11

The apolstles didn't speak in tounges until penecost and when they did it was a supernatural act of God and for the purposes of edification to believers from other nations.

You don't learn a spiritual gift. It is a gift.

I was brought up to believe tongues was the work of the devil, but I am in a church where it is accepted now. The problem I encounter is the people who speak in tongue use 1 corithians as their justification but do not go by the rules paul set forth which kind of confuses me and makes me worry im to criticle because of my upbringing and because u don't have the gift of tongues.
Any feedback would be most appreciated.

What do you mean by rules? The only rules I know of is not to flaunt it, as tongues with no interpreter uplifts yourself. But tongues with an interpreter uplifts the whole Church. I pray in tongues all the time, but I don't flaunt it out there.

What Paul was talking about is when speaking in tongues in front of the church, one must always have someone to interpret so others can know what is being said. The devil has done a great job in convincing others that speaking in tongues is bad, but the truth is that it's the only gift we can control and the most important. Not only does the devil not know what is being said, it's a weapon against him. You're praying the perfect unhindered/unselfish prayer because the holy spirit is interceeding since he knows everything and he might pray for something you need today or in the future that you probably never would have thought about, it edifies your body meaning it rebuilds it so more energy and anything that degrades the body begins to leave, charges up your spirit so you begin to get more revalations, better understanding/insight, more in tuned with God so things just flow, and better yet you're praying for others you might know or don't but the Spirit knows all. Just like Paul said, he prays and sings in tongues more than anybody, so we all should definitely try to continually speak or sing n tongues! One thing I've noticed is that when you begin to pray a lot in tongues the devil will try to discourage you by telling you lies and creating bad circumstances to stop you, but that's how you know tongues is highly effective! Keep doing it because the devil will back off and you will begin to see all sorts of miracles happen and notice how quickly the things you need begin to manifest!

God Bless

Can I get a scripture on the devil not understanding tongues because I heard this before but have never seen it backed up. Please don't think im being critical im very interested in resolveing my doubts and ultimatley only scripture can do that.

The reason I ask about this in particular is that most christians who believe in tongues base their argument on a single passage in 1 corinthians which clearly calls it a language of angel and I kind of thought lucifer being a fallen angel would in fact understand it. Again please no one take ofense as im am questioning for answers no to create strife if I ofend you because of this I repent.

No it's good that you want proof in the Scriptures. That is the way it should be, you are seeking God's truth. Here is the amplified version of the Scripture and notice how when speaking in tongues you're talking ONLY to God. Angels, devil, and no man unless God gives them the interpretation can understand, because it's all mysteries from the heart of God, and who can search God's heart?

1 Corinthians 14:1-4 AMP

EAGERLY PURSUE and seek to acquire
[this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual endowments (gifts), especially
that you may prophesy (interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching
and teaching). For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men
but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning,
because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and
hidden things [not obvious to the understanding]. But [on the other hand], the one who prophesies [who
interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching] speaks to
men for their upbuilding and constructive spiritual progress
and encouragement and consolation. He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will
and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and
improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom,
piety, holiness, and happiness].

Here is the NLV version:

1 Corinthians 14:1-4 NLT

Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.

I do have to admit I've read that before but never really seen it. Thank you for the guidance. I have other questions about tongues that still baffle me but that does resolve that one.

Tongues as a personal prayer language, enables you to pray in the will of God and edify yourself at the same time. It causes your spirit man senses to become more active and aware. It strengthens your "most holy faith". It is not necessary to have any understanding whatsoever about what is being said. From my own perspective, I find it better not to even think about it. The head has no part in this. This is your spirit talking. The head likes to analyze and "figure things out", but this will never be.

The tongue talker, speaks mysteries. If you make this a practice, you'll make your spirit man strong and your desires will more likely be leadings of the Holy Spirit.

Here's a pdf version of an awesome book on tongues by Dave Roberson at this link.

in 1Cor 14:39 Paul instructs to 'forbid not to speak with tongues'. in 1Cor 14:18 Paul relates that he 'spoke in tongues more than all <of the Corinthians>'.

Paul discusses two scenarios for speaking in tongues; one deals with speaking in tongues in a gathering of believers (church service if you will), and the other speaking in tongues outside of a church service.

when i pray in tongues outside of a church service, it edifies me (reduces my unbelief and releases my faith - 1Cor 14:4). also, speaking in tongues is a form of praise (1Cor 14:17); i speak mysteries (1Cor 14:2); and i can receive an interpretation of my tongues ( 1Cor 14:13).

speaking (in tongues or otherwise) is something i do; God will not take control of me and force me to speak in tongues (1Cor 14:32) - He gives me 'utterance' (what to say), but i must step out in faith and begin speaking, and believe by faith that the 'gibberish' i hear is inspired by God based on these Scriptures.

the interpretation is not a word-for-word translation; but a 'knowing' of something - it could be a revelation about what some specific scriptures mean (when praying in tongues while focused on scripture i don't understand in order to receive instruction from God); or it could be a revelation about what action to take in a specific area (buy this house or not; get the operation or not; etc.).

speaking in tongues (and interpretation) on a personal level is not only available to every Christian, but it is the 'gateway gift' to all of the other gifts of the Holy Spirit. word of knowledge and word of wisdom can come from receiving conceptual (not word-for-word) interpretation of the mysteries (mysteries to me that is) that i speak when i speak in tongues. speaking in tongues edifies me (releases my faith); speaking in tongues (in faith) over sickness can drive it out and empower healing or produce other miracles; speaking in tongues can make me more effective in edifying, exhorting and comforting (prophesying - 1Cor 14:3); speaking in tongues can give me revelation of whether something i hear is of God or of the devil (discerning of spirits).

like all things spiritual, there will be no proof of the validity of speaking in tongues. the only way a person will actually speak in tongues is to first see, through scriptures, that this is for every reborn believer; and then to step out in faith and try.

speaking a known language is a learned skill; so is speaking in tongues. when a baby first starts to speak, it is 'baby-talk' such as 'ma ma' and 'da da'; but with practice, the baby learns 'mother' and 'father' - tongues is no different in that it takes practice to become effective.

one last note; there's no reason to expect an interpretation of the tongues you speak (outside of a church service) to come immediately; it might be weeks or months later that you suddenly know something that you couldn't know from carnal experience or instruction.

speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues in a church service should only be done by people who are experienced in speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues outside of a church service in their personal life - just as a baby who has just begun to speak shouldn't be preaching sermons, someone who is not familiar with speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues should not be attempting this in a church service - but many do and this is what has brought so much doubt about the validity of speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues in a church service.

hoe that helps!!!

First, you really need to study, in the Bible, the purpose of speaking in tongues. Some people will say that you only truly know you are saved if you are able to speak in tongues, which is false. Speaking in tongues is certainly one of the gifts of the Spirit but there are only certain cases in which it is used.

If someone is speaking in tongues in a group then there must be someone else there that is able to translate, otherwise there is no point to it.

Sure, there are people who are able to speak in tongues when praying, but that is only done in private.

Speaking in tongues is never done for show.

The language our Father speaks is the Tongue Language. Speaking in tongues is the HIGHEST FORM OF COMMUNICATION. God gave that His language to Adam and Eve, but they lost it during the FALL and the division at the Tower of Babel. Thank God, the Lord Jesus brought it back to us through His death & resurrection.
those who have not received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, when they get to heaven, they will be in the OUTER PERIMETER in heaven. Arc Angels will teach them that there. and they will have to spend about 1 thousand yrs there to be prepared to see our heavenly Father. We are priviledge to believe the Bible, act in faith and receive this Free Gift of the Holy Spirit.
its so important you receive the Holy Spirit. i prayed for a guy just yesterday evening and Jesus filled him with the Holy Spirit and he spoke in tongues just as the Bible admonish us.

Bringing balance back in, I don't want people to be afraid that Christianity is all about doing things you feel uncomfortable doing. There is so much more to the faith, and billions of Christians have gone through life with no familiarity with a spiritual language.

It is certainly scriptural, but salvation is not based on it.

People mentioned above that there were personal prayers, and congregational professions that could be more prophetic. One is intended to be heard, while the other is intended to be private.

It takes time during a service to hear each expression of gifts, and people tend to blurt out overlapping things if a church allows anything to be said any time. Paul just established some guidelines for a sensible structure.

His letters were back-and-forth, usually with leaders of a fellowships in cities, so it is likely that someone wrote him with a question on how to handle the chaos of a meeting, and Paul responded by saying people should wait for an interpretation.

I have been in home groups and business meetings that got chaotic and tense with everyone wanting to talk. It's just human nature to want to get your two cents in.
