• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it right to question God and Jesus and their actions? Should I take the bible literally? Or should I accept what the Bible and my vicar says as the undoubted
truth?

Thanks
Rob

Yes, it is okay to question God and Jesus. You should take the Bible literally except for places where God says He will take us under his wings. He's just making a comparison of his protection with the wings of a bird for her chicks. You can accept what the Bible says as the undoubted truth. As for your vicar, he is just a man and prone to error as all of us. If anything he says goes against the Bible then trust the Bible. You can't go wrong with that.

God said He would preserve His word. He did not however say He would do it in English. God chose Hebrew and Greek for His word. (And yes some Aramaic) Those languages are so deep and specific. God's word has been proven backwards and forwards. The harder I have pressed it the more it proves it's self. God's word is true. We read english, but if something doesn't seem to jive, search it out.....look at it in its original.

To prove it one only has to follow it and they will see.

As far as a vicar.......it means some one acting "in the person of" there is no vicar of Christ. In fact i'd encourage you to read what Jesus said about the deeds of the nicolaitans in Revelation 2.

Let all men be liars. Let God be the truth. Romans 3:4

Questions and answers lead to growth. :) Christians are not mindless robots like some atheists and other non-believers seem to think. Many question various things on the bible, research various theologies and points of views, seek answers in prayer and study of the bible, and also of course with other Christians. As a Christian it's important to keep delving further into God's word - like RepTheKing has said pretty much, some things do change with translations and we owe it to ourselves to delve as deep as we can to find the true meanings as we can.

It is OK to question, but most of it comes from our misunderstanding of God's word. The Bible has no errors, but our interpretations do. Some of it is obviously not literal, and some clearly needs to be taken at face value. However, there are a number of passages about which Biblical scholars do not agree. Who is right? We won't know for sure until we go to Heaven. But don't let that discourage you. The Bible is complex and not always always crystal clear, but we can learn everything we need for our lives with a simple study Bible.

It's right to ask. It's not right to challenge God to a duel over what He's said.

God means to communicate something by His words. Over the years I've concluded the ony thing that could be expected of a created human being: that what Scripture says is more reliable than anything else I've read, though it can be obscure or understated or misunderstood by me at times.

It's not a science book or any kind of schoolbook. It's talking the truth to us, to people who are inclined to lie. So it's not always going to be easy, what it says. And we're not always going to just accept what it says, because sometimes it hurts to do so.

Howdy folks, a quick reminder about the For New Christians Forum. This forum is for new Christians to ask questions and be encouraged by other Christians. Here you can post your questions and talk about issues relating to new believers.

The Christian's only restriction for this area can be seen at the top left, just under the CF banner:

Thank you for reading this reminder.

Carry on.....

Wresting with difficult questions is an important part of growing in Christ. But one should not question him as if he is our subordinate, as if he owes us the submission that we owe to him.

The Bible is to be believed in the sense in which it was written, rembering that it makes us of a number of literary styles.

Vicar... I take it that you are a Catholic as I am. Christ instituted a hierarchical Church with a teaching authority. We are called by him to submit to the teachings of his Church commensurate with the degree of theological certainty that those teachings are given.

So very true.

Take no man's word - always back it up with the Bible. All of us at times question God because our ways are not God's ways and he can the last step on the ladder when we may be on the first looking up.

Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, when someone says something that is not of God, you will feel that still small tug at your heart and will not have peace about it - that is the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Just stay close to God and don't take man's word over the Bible - the Bibled will always win, they are the Words of Jesus.

God is not a man that He should Lie. Everything in scripture is True. Read the New American Standard Bible. Everything in scripture is both literal and spiritual. there are several supposed contradictions in scripture because all truth is not equal. there are prerequesite truths. the enemy can speak threw scripture like God can so the only way to know scripture is to know God and be led by the Holy Spirit like Jesus Christ was. remember you choose everything you believe. when you read scripture you should not try to merely understand it with the left side of your brain. in fact it is a good practice to just read it and let it effect your heart. when you read scripture and a passage really touches you that is your heart learning even thow your brain does not understand. we were ment to know God relationally not intelectually. satan uses the intellect to comfuse us. all it takes is one false belief to keep us from God.
