In a nutshell, he fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophesies for the Messiah and because he was brought to life after dying on the cross. There are many other possible answers, but those are the main ones that comes to my mind.
Btw, you're not being offending at all. ask away! ;)

 Hello! Im new member!

I have a question.
Why do christians believe Jesus (PBUH) was divine. Sorry if Im offending! I dont know:D
Basically, because His spiritual essence and origination comes from God, a Heavenly Father, rather than an earthly father. In other words, He carries his Father's spiritual genes, and his humanity is borrowed from his mother's terrestrial genes.

Peace be with you.

We believe he is divine because he said so. This is what his Apostles wrote down and passed to us.

Now, You can believe he was divine and worship him

or

You can believe he was a lunatic who claimed to be God.

But

You can't claim he was simply a prophet or a good man

because

He himself claimed to be God.

I may be wrong in this, as I am not so studious in this area, but I believe Jesus was devine because He said it, at numerous points. Also He claimed that the only way to the Father, was through Him, that He could forgive sins, that He could heal and that He is the way to our Father's Kingdom.

When you look at the Bible and the events within, Jesus has a very firm finger point at Himself, as the answer to everything. :)

No one is going to be offended by your polite and interesting question. I agree with what my friends have said. Additionally, we believe Jesus to still be alive, and that we can have a realationship with Him. It is by looking to Him that we can see what the Father is like, for he and the father are one, along with the Holy Spirit. We believe in one God, in three parts (not three Gods) God the father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit. In a way which is a holy mystery, these three are one, God Almighty.

Another way of looking at the trinity is God the creator, (for He made all things- through the son we believe) God the redeemer (for Jesus rescues us from sin) and God the Sustainer (because through the Spirit we are given all we need to live holy lives.

Hey Fatimah,

There are three general sections that point me to believe that Jesus is God:

1. Scripture:
Essentially I believe that Jesus was God in human flesh because the Bible states that He was. Because I wasn't there to see the miracles that He performed, or to hear His authoritative teaching, or to see the empty tomb, I must rely largely on the accounts of the eye-witnesses to these events, namely the Disciples.

When I read the Gospel accounts I am amazed by the sincerity of the authors that they show the "heroes of the faith", such as St. Peter, with feet of clay by documenting their failures while showing Jesus shining through in spite of their unfaithfulness. The Disciples had nothing at all to gain by falsifying records about Jesus ... in fact, they were among the most hated people in the world because of Him. They were persecuted for their faith in Jesus as Lord and were beheaded, burned, thrown in boiling water, and even crucified up-side-down (according to Church tradition).

To me it makes absolutely no sense for them to raise up another man and be murdered for it. Human nature is to pull people down, not place them up.

2. Logic:
I guess more than that, you have the logical evidence that points to His diety, such as, for example, how an ordinary Jewish carpenter's son could have had such a big impact on human history that we divide time by it, among other things. Added into this category are things like C.S. Lewis' argument which was presented earlier in this thread that talked about Jesus being either a liar, lunatic, or Lord ... He didn't leave any other options open.

3: Relationship-Experience:
Further more, one would need to explain away the changes in the lives of countless Christians all around the world that has occurred exactly as the Lord Jesus promised it would if Jesus really isn't divine and is still in His grave.

I can remember at an outreach event in my home town the preacher asked people to stand up if Jesus has made a difference in their lives and the response was incredible. To just look around the Entertainment Centre at all the people standing up testifying that Jesus is real to them in practical ways was amazing to see.

Well I follow Jesus, and Jesus claimed to be divine.
Either he was or he was a fraud.

Here's something for you as a muslim to think about! The Koran says Jesus was just a good prophet and was not crucified, but rather someone in his place. Why was he arrested in the first place? Blasphemy. Why? Because he claimed to be God. If Jesus claimed to be God and wasn't could he have qualified as a goo d prophet? Nope! He was either God or a fraud. Either way what the Koran says would be inaccurate!
Jesus also foretold that he would die a violent death. If he were wrong and did not then he would be a false prophet, and the Koran would be inaccurate calling him a good prophet. If he DID then it would also be inaccurate because it says he didn't.

The Koran says Allah loves those who love him. The Bible says that God loved us while we were yet sinners, and Christ died for us.

I'm not trying to attack you or anything I'm just trying to give you something to think about because as a Christian I love you! The Bible says heaven is a sure thing and tells us Jesus is the way.
The Koran says if you have urine on your clothes, even if you were a good muslim you won't make it.
As Christians we don't live in fear of the scales.
Just something to think about! :)

But to further answer your question, the Bible says that when Jesus was lead off to be crucified his deciples ran and went in to hiding. They were afraid for their lives. John and Simon Peter were the only ones that didn't run, and Simon Peter denied Jesus 3 times out of fear. After witnessing Jesus be carried away and executed they were all very afraid that they would be next. So, they all hid in the upper room. These were the same men who became the apostles and risked their lives, and died, to spread the gospel to the world, except for John who was exiled. What happened so that these men who were afraid to be seen in public, who's faith had been shaken, who may have possibly at that point believed that Jesus was a fraud would all of a sudden be willing to boldly risk their lives and die to make sure the world knew he wasn't? Only one thing could have. The risen Jesus came to them and reassured them he was the Lord.

Hope that's helpful! And Welcome!

Fatimuh--

We think Jesus is divine because He was God. My proof? When one studies the Bible- it could only be supernatural and the most true book in the world. For example, it has hundreds of detailed prophesies in it that has come true and more to come. It is the most accurate history book in the world because the witnesses who recorded the events documented the places, events and people immediately. They continually find archeological evidence that support it nonstop.

Thus, I chose this faith for spiritual reasons first and for intellectual reasons second.

A great book to read with these objective facts - is Evidence that Demands A Verdict by Josh McDowell. (This book would stand up in a court of law) Also, Examine the Evidence by Muncaster (who used to be an athiest but is now a christian).

Biblical Evidence (Scratching the Surface Only)

Internal Evidences
Prophesies that are confirmed within Bible

- Life of Christ
The Tribe of Judah, Gen 49:10 - Luke 3:23-28
(Genesis was written 4004 BC to 1689 BC)
(Luke's time period is 60-70 AD)

Royal Line of David, Jer 23:5 -Matt 1:1
(Jeremiah 760 to 698 BC)/(Matthew 60-70 AD)

Born of a Virgin, Isaiah 7:14/Matt 1:18-23
(Isaiah 760 to 698 BC)/(60-70 AD)

**I can list at least 20 more of these.
-Rise of Empires
In the book of Daniel, Chapter 2 - four kingdoms are described in the interpretation of the dream of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greek - Daniel 8:21, 10:20) and a fourth great kingdom to follow - part iron and clay - which is the Roman Empire - during this empire Christ came and the church was established - Daniel 2:44.

-Historical Accuracy
The Bible is loaded with historical statements concerning events hundreds of years ago, yet has not been proven incorrect on any.
(Bible compared to other ancient documents):
New Testament - starts at 25 years - between original and first surviving copies
Homer - starts at 500 years
Demosthenes - at 1400 years
Plato - at 1200 years
Caesar - at 1000 years

Number of Manuscript Copies
New Testament - 5,686
Homer - 643
Demosthenes - 200
Plato - 7
Caesar - 10

Consistency
Written by at least 40 men over a period of time exceeding 1400 years, and has no internal inconsistencies.

Claim of Inspiration
It claims to be spoken by God, 2 Tim 3:16-17). No other religious book makes such claims.

External Evidences
(Prophesies Outside the Bible)
These cities were prophesied to be destroyed and never be built again.
Nineveh - Nahum 1:10, 3:7,15, Zephaniah 2:13-14
Babylon - Isaiah 13:1-22)
Tyre (Ezekiel 26:1-28)

Bible before Science
He hangs the earth on nothing - Job 26:7
(Job was written at least 1000 years ago - some scholars think it could be even 3000 years ago)
Note: Man only knew this for 350 years
Earth is a sphere, Isaiah 40:22
Air has weight, Job 28:25
Gravity - Job 26:7, Job 38:31-33
Winds blow in cyclones, Eccl 1:6

Documents that Prove Bible is True
Gilgamesh Epic, The Sumerian King List, Mari Tablets, Babylonian Chronicles

Archealogoical Finds
Excavations of Ur, Location of Zoar, Ziggurats and the foundation of Tower of Babel

cloud0729,

Jesus did not fulfill all the prophesies because the fullfillment is in the future. You said "Jews didn't know anything about the 2 comings". Well, Paul explained it, he said that it was a mystery. I am sure Jews would not like the idea that Gentiles and Jews were to become heirs together. And for God's purposes, it was NOT the time for them to know that.

I know it may not sound like a good argument. I guess, wait and see, until the future time, when all the other prophesies come true (although I hope you don't die meanwhile...)

EPH 3:3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.
4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

I believe this verse is speaking about the future, when the antichrist will come in his name and Jews will accept him...
JOH 5:41 "I do not accept praise from men,
42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
