• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How many of you Christians been called self-righteous?

And how many of you Christians been told that you weren't true Christians because you did not agree with someone?

How did you deal with it?

I haven't been called self-righteous, but I have people telling me that I am not a true Christian. I don't really believe that I am saved or anything, but that is for me to question, not them. I do call upon Jesus, well I just started to, but I still question my salvation.

How do I deal with people saying I am not a true follower of Jesus, even though I have a hard time believing that I am? I get mad at the entire body of believers. I feel attacked.

There are people with big egos that will attack you if you don't agree with them.

I would share it all with the Lord.

2 Corinthians 12:10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with [d]insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

You know what? we are all untrue Christians. The fact that some think they are holier than anything, and more right than others, shows how much they put their ego first, and how far away from Christianity they really are. When someone says to us that we are wrong, we have to have broad shoulders. Christianity is about one thing only and that is moving away from our ego and put others first, put love first. Unfortunately not many people understand humanity, or know how to be humble, which is actually the core of everything we believe in. So chin up, and positive thoughts, you are just as worthy as everyone else, in my opinion more!

Thank you so much. And that was very useful and something I need to remember myself. God bless you

Hi Jesse. Here is my experience. I will say this as carefully as I can.

The Bible says the Cross offends, and that the world "hated Him first". I have found this to be true. Islam does not really offend the world. Nor does Buddhism, nor does Hinduism, nor does so many other religions. But so many people are deeply offended by Jesus Christ, and by Christians. It is why Christian forums are active and other forums, not so very much.

Even when we are simply presenting the Gospel, the Bible, or the truth of Christ, we are at risk of being called self-righteous. I have been called that more times than I can count online. Also "not a true Christian" because I disagree with X, Y or Z--by Christians and non-Christians alike. Being a Christian means you gut- and heart-check every blessed day. It means you put your hand on the plow and don't look back. It means you have Jesus as the most important part of your life. But it also means you don't take insults to heart if they are just insults. Sometimes, people hear about "sin" and think the people delivering the news are "self-righteous". That's just because they really don't want to hear about sin.

You can't be self-righteous if you know and believe that you are a sinner saved by the Blood of Christ alone. That is exactly the OPPOSITE of self-righteous. It is in fact OTHER-righteous. It is saying that Christ is righteous and you are not. Again, other people don't want to hear this because of perceptions about Christianity and because of sin. That said, we, all of us, have to take care that we don't come across that way. Most of the time we are really not, it's just perception.

Last, this is really ironic in the age of the Church of Social Justice, which is the most self-righteous secular religion I can ever imagine. Honestly this thing is IMBUED with self-righteousness from start to finish; there is NOTHING that can save you but your own Virtue. So really--anyone that calls "you're self-righteous" but adheres to Social Justice really has no leg to stand on.

That was a little hard to hear to be perfectly honest. But I guess I need to check my own heart to see if I'm being self-righteous. I also need to check my own heart to see if I'm really a Christian. I don't know if Christ is as important to me as you say he needs to be.

We all struggle with idols---believe me. I think it will always be a struggle. But if you are born again, He will take on a new prominence in your life. Pray! Ask Him into your life. Tell Him that you want Him! Being a Christian (if you're not already) is an "excellent adventure"--that's the truth. It is freedom and truth. :)

Check this out:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations

Just look at all of those groups. Actually, there are many more subdivisions. Thousands of them. And what sets them all apart?
Beliefs.
I would suppose each group thinks that their groups beliefs are the correct ones. And they also seem to think that God will either accept or reject us on technicalities based on WHAT we believe.
How silly. There are thousands of various beliefs and each one uses the same bible to defend theirs and disprove the others.

Doesn't that raise a red flag in your mind? Have you ever noticed this phenomenon? Why would God give us his word in a format that is so vague and open ended that it causes all of this confusion and division? I have asked a few people this question and they all answered the same way: "the bible isn't confusing but very simple and my group has the correct interpretation".

Everyone seems to judge whether or not someone is a true Christian by WHAT they believe doctrinally speaking, that is.
I would not worry about what they say. Just be polite and ignore the names and accusations. It is not worth the bother to worry about it.

How many of you Christians been called self-righteous?
I have. I've had people imply that I was self-righteous simply because I was trying to help others grow in the Spirit, and I've seen it happen to other members too. I've also seen people imply that celibates are always self-righteous which is not true. I would never try to put myself above others for these reasons (or any others).

And how many of you Christians been told that you weren't true Christians because you did not agree with someone?
I was never directly told that I was not a true Christian, but I have seen people saying that Catholics are not Christians which is not true. I have been accused of not having enough faith or trust in God because I struggle with anxiety I cannot control (because it's a real mental issue), among other accusations.

How did you deal with it?
Well, that's something I'm still working on. I felt hurt by it, but I tried to remain peaceful.

Hang in there. It isn't easy to deal with others attacking you and accusing you of things you don't do. Remember that these people likely don't know you. My best advice is to pray for them and for yourself in these situations. You can try to ignore them, but I know that isn't easy. God can give you the strength, wisdom, and peace to endure this.

I've been on forums for decades and been called nearly everything in the book. I deal with it by examining the accusation to see if there is any truth about me. If there is I accept that truth, admit it, and either move on or do something about it.

If I find no truth in the accusation, I shrug off the insult like water off a ducks back. The insult reflects more on them than it does me. Insults are usually designed to move people off of their objectives and the most often I find the insult is to distract me from a discussion in which I know I'm right and suspect the insulter knows it too.

By becoming angry, one falls into that trap and one loses the advantage of being right. It is true in all aspects of human interaction from war clear down to individual discussions that if I can make you angry, I will almost certainly win. Angry people respond with animal instinct. Calm people respond with reason and direction.
