Question: what are formal debate rules please?

Please could you post some rules for us duffers? I was not enlightened into formal debate at school as, I suspect, many others were't.

I would like to know how to take part whilst not breaking simpletons rules which might thus otherwise rule us out. Irony intended.

I am not sure really that this subforum follows its intention, but I may be wrong, being a newcomer. It looks to me as if the forum is simply for evolution/creation debates, and that it is not formal.
