For those of you who have baptised their children at infancy. Should your children grow to believe differently than you in regards to baptism, would you support them in being baptised by immersion as an adult? Or would it be foolish for them to have a '2nd baptism'?

What about mode? Is sprinkling/pouring an effective form of baptism, or is it a condition of the heart? (A man once told me my husband was not saved because even as an adult, he was sprinkled and not immersed when baptised)

All these things sometimes run through my head and I wonder...hmmmm. I endured a 6 month long study to conclude that infant baptism was a sound practice (and household baptism for that matter)...however, I wonder about mode sometimes.

Yes..I am rambling here :doh: I tend to do that!

Feed off it, give me your 2cents :):p

I was in a conversation with a guy a few weeks ago, and the "Believe and be baptized" topic came up. He said that in the Greek text (I don't know any Greek, so someone help me out) a better word than "baptized" would be "immersed." However, this is not meant to be taken as an saved-only, submerged-only argument.

You can immerse yourself in a hobby. You can immerse yourself in your work. You can immerse yourself in anything that is important to you. The wonder of salvation (one of them, anyway) is how the heart is changed from one that despises God to one that seeks His will. We now desire to be immersed in contemplation of His goodness and seek greater understanding from His word. Just like a marinade, we begin to take on a "flavor" of Christ more and more as our immersion continues.

Since that conversation, certain passages make much more sense to me, as does the matter of Christ saving us from sin, which leads to our salvation rather than Christ saving us from Hell. A cheapened gospel gives us nothing more than a "Get out of Hell Free" card and requires no change in demeanor. Faith without works is, indeed, dead, and the world can see that. "By their fruits you should know them." These are just two examples of how the flavoring through immersion in Christ sets us apart from the world, and "saltifies" us.

Matthew 12:33-37
“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

I know this is nothing more than a side comment on your question, but it seemed a good time to share this.

The Scriptures teach:

1CO 10:2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

Now the cloud was above which infers sprinkling, and the Red Sea was as a wall on either side of the Israelites towering over their head therefore the only water they would have felt was a sprinkling from the wall's of water that rose above their heads. The only immersed ones that day were ........ the Egyptians!! Could that be the original source of modern baptism?!? ;)

My children were baptized as infants into the Covenant Family. If, when they get older, decide to commit themselves to another tradition, I would first try to explain my position to them as fully as possible, and then support them fully in their decision.

As long as that tradition was Jesus Christ and His Gospel, right?

Absolutely.....I should have clarified that. In fact, after I posted it, I thought I would edit it to say "within the realm of Christian orthodoxy"....but figured that you all knew what I meant. You know what assuming does? :)
