On the subject of nicknames I came across this in an old astronomy textbook of mine.

The faraway sights observed nightly by astronomers are exotic, beautiful, and often poorly understood.
Perhaps with the urge to cope with the unknown explains why so many homespun names have been coined for them, in conscious rebellion against the cold alphanumerics of catalogue designations.

The IAU which according to AV is a super evil organization on par with SPECTRE and Kaos has pressured astronomers to use the proper designation instead of nicknames.
For example.

The correct designation is SDSS J1038+4849 not the Smiley Face galaxy cluster.

Or this.

The IAU want astronomers to refer to this object as a Bok globule not the obscene gesture nebula.
