  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I posted this in another section but wanted to expose this question to a broader audience.

Recently I was at Wal-mart in the card section with a friend of mine. I saw a card in the religious section that said, "Happy First Communion". While I do believe that the remembrance of the last supper is important, I was outraged that someone was making money off of the sacraments. Then I began to wonder, "How many people actually take communion seriously?" And "How many people understand the depth of what the sacraments mean?". I am beginning to think that our congregations have made communion something that is merely a motion and that they do not really understand why it is called HOLY communion. Why aren't churches teaching about what communion really is?

You mean, why do they not have it as a full meal

I guess that would be a good question too, but what I am concerned with is it seems like people have brought the act of communion down to just juice and bread. Whether you believe that the bread and wine (juice) is literally the body and blood of Christ or not, I think that communion has become a motion and is no longer being taught as sacred. Does that make sense? My question is why are churches no longer teaching about the sacredness of communion?

I am speaking on personal witness. I see people cutting up and laughing while others are taking part in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup and it really bothers me that they are lacking the reverence.

it's due to a superstitious view of the sacraments, turning them into something with power in & of themselves, rather than as the means of grace they are.

Look for the new Shillmark line of religious greeting cards, coming soon to a store or church near you: "Congrats on your conversion!" "Oh happy day you've stopped backsliding!" "Wow! You actually repented, I don't believe it!" "Great job on quitting being such a legalist!" "Way to lighten up, ya fundie!"
