Question for Muslims

Salaam Alaikum,
I was wondering if it is true that according to Islam, people eat and drink in hell. Can you list the passages in the Quran and hadiths that describe this?

Thanks.

alaikum assalam
yes it is true . i will answer in the next post. but for now please read this:

1- Chapter 2 of the book of Genesis says that the Garden of Eden is materialistic:-
2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

2- Chapter 3 of the book of Genesis says that the cause behind the dismissal of Adam & Eve was materialistic :-

3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that
it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one
wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto
her husband with her; and he did eat. 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head,
and thou shalt bruise his heel 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee,
saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake;
in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 3:18 Thorns
also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the
herb of the field; 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,
till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for
dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

3- Chapter 19 in the book of Job also proves my point:-

19:25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 19:26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 19:27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.

4- Chapter 5 in the book of Matthews also does :-
5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from
thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should
perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 5:30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

5- Chapter 8 of Matthews speaks of materialistic reward and punishment:-
8:11And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west,
and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom
of heaven. 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

6- Chapter 14 in the book of Mark says:-
14:25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the
vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

A question:- if Jesus was God, how do you explain the text?

7- Chapter 19 in the book of Revelation says that the punishment for the non-believers will be materialistic:-
19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that
wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had
received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image.
These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Food in Hellfire:

In Hellfire:
44: 43. Verily, the tree of Zaqqum,
44. Will be the food of the sinners,
45. Like boiling oil, it will boil in the bellies,
46. Like the boiling of scalding water.

69: 30. (It will be said): "Seize him and fetter him,
31. Then throw him in the blazing Fire.
32. "Then fasten him with a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits!"
33. Verily, He used not to believe in Allah, the Most Great,
34. And urged not on the feeding of Al-Miskin (the poor),
35. So no friend has he here this Day,
36. Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds,
37. None will eat except the Khati'un (sinners, disbelievers, polytheists, etc.).

73: 10. And be patient (O Muhammad ) with what they say, and keep away from them in a good way.
11. And leave Me Alone to deal with the beliers (those who deny My Verses, etc.), and those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while.
12. Verily, with Us are fetters (to bind them), and a raging Fire.
13. And a food that chokes, and a painful torment.

88: 4. They will enter in the hot blazing Fire,
5. They will be given to drink from a boiling spring,
6. No food will there be for them but a poisonous thorny plant,
7. Which will neither nourish nor avail against hunger.

This passage shows that God forbade Adam and Eve to eat the fruit, and Satan then tempted them to do so. Adam and Eve disobeyed God's command and were cast out of the Garden to live in a world where they would face hardships.

Notice that in spite of this, God blessed them by providing them with animal skins as clothing.

"Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them" (Genesis 3:21).

3- Chapter 19 in the book of Job also proves my point:-

Yes, there is definitely material reward and punishment from God in the next life, and sometimes He provided material rewards for people in this life. We are to thank Him for everything because whether we know it or not, He provides for us. No disagreement here.

A question:- if Jesus was God, how do you explain the text?

7- Chapter 19 in the book of Revelation says that the punishment for the non-believers will be materialistic:-

received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image.
These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
How does Revelation 19:20 disprove Jesus being God?

Disbelievers will me punished physically, that is true.

What is the thorny plant referred to is 88:6?

According to Corpus Quran, the word is not "poisonous thorny plant" but "bitter thorny plant"
The Quranic Arabic Corpus - Word by Word Grammar, Syntax and Morphology of the Holy Quran

If I am not mistaken, it is called a dari, right? I read the tafsirs that I have access to in English (I speak almost no Arabic), and this is what I found.

According to tafsir Ibn Abbas and Al Jalalayn, the dari is a cactus like plant that animals avoid when it is hard, and that grows in the roads of Mecca. According to Ibn Qathir, most of the scholars and exegetes he consulted state it is a plant that is hard like a cactus. One of the people claims it is a tree from hellfire, he said this allegedly quoting Ibn Abbas- who himself said it is a type of thorn plant avoided by animals.

I would conclude that the poisonous thorny plant is a cactus found in Arabia. Would I be correct in making this assumption?

Thanks.

سلام :)

Thanks for the reply and Iam glad you know Arabic :)

As for your question (How does Revelation 19:20 disprove Jesus being God?)

I was referring to and wrote the question under Mark 14:25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
Does God eat and drink?

And if he does why didn't Jesus refer to the kingdom as his?

Now let me display the story of creating humankind as narrated in the Holy Quran, the verses are in black, my comments are in red

30. And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "Verily, I am going to place (mankind) generations after generations on earth."
This took place before Adam was created, therefore God planed for him to live here on earth and not in heavens
we do not see this in the Bible

2:50. And (remember) when We said to the angels; "Prostrate to Adam." So they prostrated except Iblîs (Satan). He was one of the jinns; he disobeyed the Command of his Lord. Will you then take him (Iblîs) and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the Zâlimûn (polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc).

Satan is not an angel, he happened to be with them.

7:12. (Allâh) said: "What prevented you (O Iblîs) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" Iblîs said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay."

A dumb answer :) what made him think fire is better than clay?

38:77. (Allâh) said: "Then get out from here, for verily, you are outcast. 78. "And verily!, My Curse is on you till the Day of Recompense."

He was dismissed from heaven because he disobeyed the Almighty Allah.

20:117. Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. 118. Verily, you have (a promise from Us) that you will never be hungry therein nor naked. 119. And you (will) suffer not from thirst therein nor from the sun's heat.
Allah warns Adam and Eve against satan's mischief, which we do not see in the Bible

7: 82. [Iblîs (Satan)] said: "By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all, 83. "Except Your chosen slaves amongst them (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islâmic Monotheism)."
Satan wants to take revenge from Adam and Eve

7: 18. (Allâh) said (to Iblîs) "Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all."
Allah says that whoever obeys satan and disobeys Allah will go to Hellfire

19. "And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zâlimûn (unjust and wrongdoers)."

Here comes the main lesson for Adam and Eve and for their decendants; it is being asked to do and not to do somethings تكليف)

7.20. Then Shaitân (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals." 21. And he [Shaitân (Satan)] swore by Allâh to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere wellwishers for you both."
Satan wants to deprive them from heaven because he thinks they caused him to be dismissed from it

20:120. Then Shaitân (Satan) whispered to him, saying : "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?"

Then they both ate of the tree, and so their private parts became manifest to them, and they began to cover themselves with the leaves of the Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray”

he lied and theybelieved him and ate from the forbidden tree

7:23. They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."

Then Adam received from his Lord Words. And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful”
They realized Satan cheated them, they felt remorse and repented
Allah accepted there repentance

20:123. (Allâh) said:"Get you down (from the Paradise to the earth), both of you, together, some of you are an enemy to some others. Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery.

They were sent to earth as was preplanned by Allah

In summary:
Our 1st parents were not sent to earth as a punishment. Allah does from the beginning .not punish who repents, we were meant to live here on earth
The story of our 1st parents is a practical lesson for all of us
It says:
If you obey your creator you will go to heavens
If you obey satan you will burn in Hellfire
We have the will and the choice between going back to heavens or burning in Hellfire

Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zâlimûn (unjust and wrong[bless and do not curse]doers)."

And he [Shaitân (Satan)] swore by Allâh to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere well[bless and do not curse]wishers for you both."

Assalamu Alaikum, sunrise.

In Jesus Christ, God chose to make Himself incarnate as a man. So as a man eats and drinks, so did He. The only way that Jesus was different from men was that He was sinless.

The story in the Quran and Bible regarding Adam and Eve is similar, except the Bible does not say they were in heaven but the Garden of Eden.

In the Bible, God did not mention the serpent to Adam and Eve, but He told them about the tree and that they should not eat from it. So He did give them a fair warning.

Genesis 3:1-3

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

If God tells us not to do something, we should not do it.

After casting Adam and Eve out of the Garden, God did provide for them by making clothes for them and Eve credits Him for providing her with a baby.

Genesis 4:1

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” 2

Genesis 3:20

20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.[g] 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

It is interesting how in the Quran, God punishes Satan for disobedience (ie not bowing down to Adam) when the command was given to angels and Satan was not an angel. I debated this with IloveBeingaMuslimah on another thread.

The statement that humanity was not thrown out of paradise because of Adam's and Eve's disobedience is contradicted by what Muhammad claimed Adam will state when people come to him during Judgement Day.

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira and Hudhaifa that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, would gather people. The believers would stand till the Paradise would be brought near them. They would come to adam and say: O our father, open for us the Paradise. He would say: What turned ye out from the Paradise was the sin of your father adam... (Book #001, Hadith #0380)

Search the word sin of your father adam in the Hadith (Hadis) Books (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu-Dawud, and Malik's Muwatta)

I am quoting this hadith only partially, since otherwise there wouldn't be enough space for my response.

Furthermore, Muhammad stated that if it wasn't for Eve, women would be loyal to their husbands.

(1) Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Were it not for Bani Israel, meat would not decay; and were it not for Eve, no woman would ever betray her husband." (Book #55, Hadith #611)

Search the word were it not FOR EVE in the Hadith (Hadis) Books (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu-Dawud, and Malik's Muwatta)

The Bible makes it clear that because of Adam's and Eve's sin, they were thrown out of the Garden, and humanity with them. According to Muhammad, even Adam believes he is responsible for the fact that humans were thrown out of the Garden of Eden.

Muhammad also said that Eve bears responsibility for women cheating on their husbands. I am curious how this is possible, since neither the Bible or Quran have any statements about Eve cheating on Adam.

While we are looking at Bukhari Book #55, Hadith #611
, one thing I am curious about is the statement:

The Prophet said, "Were it not for Bani Israel, meat would not decay;

What is this in reference to?

Thanks.

Salaam Alaikum, sunrise.

Thanks for sharing. We agree Hell is a bad place to end up.

The reason I asked about the food and drink in Hellfire according to the Quran, is to point out a contradiction that exists in the passages you mentioned.

While 88:6 states that for the inhabitants of hell there will be no food but a cactus, 69:36 states that there will be no food for them but filth from the washing of wounds.

36.
Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds,

Corpus Quran translates it as

(69:36:5) ghis'līnin(the) discharge of wounds وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ

Ibn Qathir cites most of the Quran exegetes stating that this is a reference to pus from wounds.

(So no friend has he here this Day. Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds. None will eat it except the Khati'un.) meaning, there is no one today who can save him from the punishment of Allah, nor any close friend or intercessor whose request would be honored. He will have no food here except for the filthy washing of wounds. Qatadah said, "It will be the worst food of the people of the Hellfire.'' Ar-Rabi` and Ad-Dahhak both said, "It (Ghislin) is a tree in Hell.'' Shabib bin Bishr reported from `Ikrimah that Ibn `Abbas said, `Ghislin will be the blood and fluid that will flow from their flesh.'' `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas that he said, `Ghislin is the pus of the people of the Hellfire.''

Tafsir Ibn Kathir - Quran Tafsir - The Bad Condition of Whoever is given His Record in His Left Hand

There is clearly a contradiction present.

88:6 states that there will be no food for the people in hellfire aside from a cactus.

69:36 states there will be no food for the people in hellfire aside from pus that will flow from wounds.

Either 88:6 is true, and the inhabitants of hell eat only dari, or 69:36 is true, that they eat only pus flowing from wounds.

Which is it?

I knew that if I just waited long enough, you would finally get to your point in all of this. First of all, whenever I read and study the Holy Qur’an, I am always mindful of the following verse:

(3:7) He it is Who has revealed the Book to you; some of its verses are decisive – they are the basis of the Book – and others are allegorical. Then those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part of it which is allegorical, seeking to mislead, and seeking to give it (their own) interpretation. And none knows its interpretation save Allah, and those firmly rooted in knowledge. They say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord. And none mind except men of understanding.

I also read various tafsirs, Ahadith, commentaries, and opinions as supplemental information during my contemplation of the Qur’an as well as read the Qur’an in the original Arabic (which is minus all of the interpolations). Then I rely on my God given abilities in sound reasoning and common sense in order to figure out the true meaning of the Message. That is what the religion of Islam instructs all of us to do. It’s the responsibility of every individual to read and understand the Qur’an to the best of his/her abilities and not just blindly follow tafsirs, Ahadith, commentaries, opinions, etc. Now you seem to be working very hard to discover and point out contradictions in the Qur’an. The two verses that you have provided do not contradict each other. What you need to understand is that all of the various descriptions of heaven and hell are largely allegorical and metaphorical. Heaven and hell will be unlike anything that any of us has ever experienced on earth. Heaven will be an unimaginably wonderful experience for those fortunate enough to be able to experience such a place. In contrast, hell will be a place of unimaginable pain and suffering. The Qur’an as well as the Bible gives numerous various descriptions according to our experiences here on earth in order to give us some idea of what it will be like. But these descriptions are not to be taken literally. An exact, accurate description of heaven and hell is, quite frankly, literally beyond our comprehension and understanding. Your mistake in not realizing and understanding this has apparently led you to the erroneous conclusion that verse 69:36 and 88:6 contradict each other.

Wassalam,
Karim

Wassalam,

Alaikum Salaam,

You seem to be annoyed that I am pointing out errors and contradictions in your faith. Muslims enjoy doing the same thing- pointing out what they see as errors and contradictions in the Bible. They are trying to lead me from Christianity towards their faith, I am trying to lead you from Islam towards my faith. It is called interfaith dialogue and prosyletization... something that both Christians and Muslims on this forum and many other forums do.

If you are unable or unwilling to engage in this discussion, feel free to ignore it or leave. But don't hypocritically attack me for something both Christians and Muslims do. If you have the truth you want to share it. If you believe others are in error that puts them at risk of going to hell, you want to encourage them to leave it. It is only something any decent human being would do.

In regards to your comments on 88:6 and 69:36 being allegories, please show me where the Quran says this.

Please show me where the Quran states its description of hell is allegorical.

You say that you use your own God given intelligence to interpret the Quran... guess what, so do I. And my God given brain tells me that pus from wounds and cactus-like plants are 2 different things.
Therefore to state that a person in hell will have no food to eat but pus in one verse and then to state he or she will have no food to eat but a cactus plant in another means there is a contradiction. Tafsirs Ibn Abbas, Ibn Qathir and Al Jalalayn do nothing to resolve that contradiction.

Why would God contradict Himself? The simple reason is that God wouldn't. But a human being would. I believe that a human being, not God, was the author of the Quran. No offense intended.

Lastly, 3:7 doesn't apply to me for the simple reason that I do not follow the parts in the Quran that are allegorical... I don't believe that what it has to say about hell is real. I agree with the parts of the Quran that are in agreement with the Bible, with what disagrees with the Bible I disagree.

Take care.

I can go into a lengthy discussion of this verse but I will only talk specifically in reference to your questions, which are answered by this verse. Now in reference to your questions, verse 3:7 explains that it is very important to remember that the Qur’an contains allegory along with what is plain and decisive. The only safeguard against being misled by what is allegorical is that the interpretation of such verses must be in complete harmony with what is laid down in clear and decisive words, with no contradictions whatsoever. Therefore, with regard to the subject of hell, what follows is one of many decisive verses explaining the concept:

(8:37) That Allah may separate the wicked from the good, and put the wicked one upon another, then heap them together, then cast them into hell. These indeed are the losers.

Upon reading verse 8:37, one should come to the realization that hell is where evil doers are destined to go and that it is not a very pleasant place to end up. Having realized this, one will then understand that the various descriptions of hell in the following verses are allegorical and are meant to convey the painful suffering that awaits those unfortunate enough to end up in such a place in ways that individuals can understand:

(7:41) Theirs will be a bed of hell, and over them coverings. Thus do We recompense the wrong-doers.

(9:35) On the day when it will be heated in the Fire of hell, then their foreheads and their sides and their backs will be branded with it: This is what you hoarded up for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.

(14:16) In front of him is hell, and he will be made to drink boiling, festering water.

(69:36) Nor any food except filth from the washing of wounds,

(88:6) No food will there be for them but a poisonous thorny plant,

There are many terrible descriptions such as these in the Qur’an that we can all relate to and understand. But this is how one arrives at the conclusion that these descriptions are allegorical and not literal.

Assalamu Alaikum.

Not to be rude, but I asked you for evidence that the descriptions of hell in the Quran are allegorical. You haven't done this.

You have shown me a verse that states that some verses are decisive and others are allegorical. This verse does not state which verses fall into which category.

You wrote also something I found interesting:

The only safeguard against being misled by what is allegorical
is that the interpretation of such verses must be in complete harmony with what is laid down in clear and decisive words, with no contradictions whatsoever.

Sounds like if one isn't careful, some of what is written in the Quran may mislead him/her.

Also, what in the Quran is laid down in clear and decisive words? Are you stating that there are parts of it that are unclear and written undecisively?

How do you know 8:37 is "decisive" whereas 88:6 and 69:36 are not?

88:6 and 69:36 contradict one another. One verse states that a person in hell will have no food except for the washing of wounds. The other states s/he will have no food except for a plant that resembles a cactus.

They can't both be true. There is a contradiction.

Thanks for sharing your belief. I believe there is only one God, and that He came down to earth in the form of Jesus Christ to die for our sins.

I believe Muhammad was a man who was sincere in his beliefs and that he did a lot of things that were good and he believed he was serving God. I do not however believe he was a prophet from God, or that the Quran is God's scripture.

I am also btw not offended by any questions or critiques you or others raise about my faith.

Either 88:6 is true, and the inhabitants of hell eat only dari, or 69:36 is true, that they eat only pus flowing from wounds.

This is proof that these are symbolic teachings. The exact same applies to Christianity. Many of the teachings in the Bible and Quran are symbolic.

Hellfire refers to the flames of remorse for wasting one's life in selfishness and opposition to the Divine teachings, and failing to learn faithfulness and love.

Recall Jesus' statements:"let the dead bury their dead", "But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not" and his constant use of metaphor to teach his followers (parables).

To insist on literal fulfillment of the teachings of the Bible and Quran is to miss what Muhammad and Christ (peace be upon them!) actually meant by their words.

Concerning the Food for the Inhabitants of Hell: by Ansar Al 'Adl

This should answer the alleged contradiction.

At this stage, there are several ways of explaining the alleged contradiction.
1. Linguistically, there is no contradiction between only eating Dari, and eating from the Tree of Zaqqum. Ad-Dari is a general term for the thorny plants found in Hell-fire, the greatest of which is the Tree of Zaqqum. There is also no contradiction if we understand Ghisleen to refer to a Tree, as many of the early scholars did. This is what has been narrated from Ar-Rabi and Ad-Dahhak about what verse 69:36 means, as they said, "It (Ghislin) is a tree in Hell."

2. We can also reconcile the verses by seeking a more comprehensive definition of Ghisleen. Muhammad Asad made an interesting comment on the meaning of Ghisleen:

The noun ghislin, which appears in the Qur'an only in this one instance, has been variously - and very contradictorily - explained by the early commentators. Ibn Abbas, when asked about it, frankly answered, "I do not know what ghislin denotes" (Razi). The term "filth" used by me contains an allusion to the "devouring" of all that is abominable in the spiritual sense: cf. its characterization in the next verse as "[that] which none but the sinners eat" - i.e. (metaphorically) in this world, and, consequently, in the hereafter as well. (Asad, Message of the Qur'an, The Book Foundation 2003)

This is a likely explanation since the punishments of Hell-fire are beyond human understanding, and therefore any reference to punishment in Hell is naturally a general reference. It is logical that Ghisleen is a comprehensive term used to refer to filth of any form.

3. Even if we state that Ghisleen does indeed refer to a collection of foul liquids, then it becomes clear that one source of Ghisleen is the Dari plants. In fact, Imaam Abu Abdullah Al-Qurtubi (d. 1272 CE) mentions in his commentary, Al-Jaami'li Ahkaam Al-Qur'aan, the following narration:

Khalid bin Ziyad said: I heard Al-Mutawakil bin Hamdan ask about this verse, "They will not have any food except from Dharee'" He said: It has reached me that Al-Dharee' is a tree in hell-fire [Jahanam] bearing blood and puss, with a bitter taste and that is their food. (SOURCE)

Thus, from this explanation of the early scholars it becomes clear that ghisleen is found in the Dari and the Zaqqum. It can be interpreted to describe another aspect of the same food. Therefore, ingesting Dari is equivalent to ingesting Ghisleen.

4. It should also be noted that the meaning of the verse in Arabic is meant to imply that there is no food other than food of such a nature. This is the beauty of the Qur'anic arabic, as Syed Qutb (d. 1966CE) notes:

They are "made to drink from a boiling fountain. Their only food shall be the fruit of Dhari', which will neither nourish nor satisfy their hunger." Dhari' is said to be a tree of fire in Hell. This explanation is based on what has been revealed about the tree of "zayqoom" which grows at the centre of Hell. It is also said to be a kind of cactus thorn, which when green is called "shabraq" and is eaten by camels. However, when it is fully grown it cannot be eaten as it becomes poisonous. Whatever it is in reality, it is a kind of food like "ghisleen" and "shabraq" (names given by the Qur'an to refer to the food available in Hell) which neither nourishes nor appeases hunger.

It is obvious that we, in this world, cannot fully comprehend the nature of that suffering and torture in the hereafter. The description is made in order to give our human perceptions the feeling of the greatest possible pain, which is produced by a combination of humiliation, weakness, failure, the scorching fire, drinking and bathing in boiling water, and eating food unacceptable even to the camels.

From all these aspects we get a feeling of the ultimate affliction. But the affliction of the hereafter is, nevertheless, greater. Its true nature is incomprehensible except to those who will actually experience it. May Allah never count us among them.

Similarly, Shaykh Ibrahim Memon Madani says:

Here there is a question that some other ayaat are talking about some other type of food people will have in the Hell-fire. Just like inna shajarata zaqqum - a tree that's called az-zaqqum. When Allah SWT says they will have only this thing to eat, it simply means they will have only these type of items in the Hell-fire. Nothing of real food. Everything that they will use for food over there will not be really food, just like they will go to that stream of pus and would start drinking from it - its not food. They would go to those trees that have poisoned fruits, full of thorns, and they will start chewing that - [but] it's not something to eat. So, it simply means nothing that deserves to be used as a food over there. People will just start taking things from here and there, whatever they find they will just start eating those.

Hence, the type of exclusion given in the verses does not exclude substances of a similar nature. If the verses were about this life, and one stated that a group of people would have no food but terrible thorny plants, while another verse stated that the same group would have roast chicken (or some other pleasant food), then it might be a contradiction. However, this is not the case here. The meaning of the Qur'an is clear that no matter what the food, it will be an unbearable torture beyond human imagination.

5. Lastly, it should be noted that there are different levels in Hell, and different groups in Hell. All these groups will recieve different punishments depending on what they deserve. The verse about Ghisleen states that none shall eat it except the khati'un (a category of sinners), who neither believed in Allah nor fed the poor and needy. Meanwhile, the chapter about Dari is only speaking about some people who will enter Naaran Haamiyah (88:2-4), which some scholars describe as a certain level of Hell-fire. As Imaam Al-Qurtubi mentions in his tafsir:

Allah has said: "Therefore he has not here today a true friend, Nor any food save filth" [Al-Haqqah, 35-36] Allah said here "Nor any food save filth" which is different than Ghisleen. It is believed that Hell-fire is made of levels, those who eat from al-zaqoom, those who eat from al-ghisleen, those who eat from Al-dharee', those who drink from hameem, and those who drink from As-sideed. Al-Kalbi said: Al-Dharee' is for those on a certain station [in Hell] and Al-zaqoom are for those on a different station. (SOURCE)

Heaven and Hell are spiritual conditions. They occur in this world as well as in the next.

What is meant by the inmates of hell eating poisonous foods is quite simple. Those in a spiritual condition of closeness to God eat of the fruits of the spirit. That is, they eat love, fellowship, kindness, truthfulness, worshipfulness of God.

Those in a spiritual condition of deprivation eat the fruits of gluttony, lust, greed, and hatred.

It is easy to see that the good fruits give everlasting life, and that the evil fruits yield only pain and suffering.

Therefore we must eschew the evil fruits and cling to the sure handle of God and eat the fruits He has ordained for us.

Assalamu Alaikum, LoveBeingAMuslimah,

Concerning the Food for the Inhabitants of Hell: by Ansar Al 'Adl

This should answer the alleged contradiction.

At this stage, there are several ways of explaining the alleged contradiction.
1. Linguistically, there is no contradiction between only eating Dari, and eating from the Tree of Zaqqum. Ad-Dari is a general term for the thorny plants found in Hell-fire, the greatest of which is the Tree of Zaqqum.

No argument here.

There is also no contradiction if we understand Ghisleen to refer to a Tree, as many of the early scholars did. This is what has been narrated from Ar-Rabi and Ad-Dahhak about what verse 69:36 means, as they said, "It (Ghislin) is a tree in Hell."
While some of the early scholars understood Ghisleen to refer to a tree, others understood it to mean pus.

Tafsir Al Jalalayn

nor any food except pus, the vile excretions of the inhabitants of the Fire — or it [ghislīn] may denote certain trees therein —

Tafsir Ibn Abbas

(Nor any food) in the Fire (save filth) that which spills from the bellies and skins of the people of the Fire of puss, blood and fluids

http://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=73&tSoraNo=69&tAyahNo=36&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2
Tafsir Ibn Qathir

Most of the sources claim Ghislin is pus from the people of hell, not a tree.

Corpus Quran translates it as "the discharge of wounds"

(69:36:5) ghis'līnin(the) discharge of wounds

http://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=gsl#%2869:36:5%29

Unlike Ad-Dahkak, Ibn Abbas lived during the time of Muhammad and personally knew him. I do not know when Ar-Rabi' lived.

Ibn Abbas and Ibn Kathir understood it to mean pus flowing from wounds. The authors of Al Jalalayn also believed this, though they stated it may also be a tree.

The Quran goes through some lengths to describe hell, and focuses on the food of the people in it. It doesn't just provide a general statement by saying "it will be terrible", but it provides detail. Unfortunately, the details provided contradict.

Ghisleen may be found in Dari, but if a person eats only Dari s/he eats only the exterior, and if s/he eats only the pus, s/he eats only the interior.

It would be like saying that a person eats only sugar and oil in one sentence and that a person eats only flour in another, when in fact they only eat pancakes. Only eating pancakes does not make either the first or second sentence true. The first and second sentence contradict each other, even if all 3 ingredients are found in a pancake.

It would be true (although clumsy) to say a person eats only sugar, oil and flour, which would mean they only eat pancakes.

However saying a person eats only sugar and oil in one sentence and that s/he eats only flour in another, would not mean they eat pancakes.

Similarly, saying a person in hell will eat only pus in one sentence and that s/he will eat only Dari in another does not mean they will be eating a Dari filled with pus.

There is still a contradiction.
