Along the general theme of the thread. I got my first icon from our senior Lutheran pastor who was selling 'all' their belongings so he and his wife could on a 'mission' to China for five years. It has a lot more sentimental value because of it's previous owner :)

One thing I love about Lutheran Christians (and Anglicans too) is that they do use crucifixes and understand the beauty and power of that image. They also do not have problems using images of Mary or Joseph or the Apostles either as some of their Churches reveal. This to me is awesome! That and the fact that Lutherans stand with us Catholic on our listing of the ten commandments and do not try to falsely accuse anyone of worshipping statues or saints like the fundamentalist do. Really there is alot I appreciate about my good Lutheran brothers and sisters and their appreciation for images, sacred music, and solid Liturgies. Amen my brothers! :)

Amen on that! To me, as long as you don't worship the statuary but instead use it as a reminder, it can be a wonderful tool to confess the Communion of Saints, and how we are united on Earth to our brethren in Heaven, and that they continue to point us sinners towards the cross and pray for us. However, we don't believe that the saints mete out any Grace for us through their prayers, or that we should in turn pray for them or abide by the intercession of the saints, but rather look at them, and see how their lives show us towards the Cross and Christ.

For all of us are Saints upon this earth.

Simul Justus et Peccator.

Hello, I was skimming through the Book of Concord and was considering when Lutherans or Protestants began to use the plain wooden cross as compared to a Roman Catholic crucifix. Does anybody know the specifics for using the plain wooden cross as compared to the Roman Catholic crucifix? . .

Thanks. W.P.M.
Our Processional Cross is inscribed with INRI. Our new sanctuary has a life size crucifix available, but we haven't sized out a cross yet to mount it or suspend it, above the altar. Once the Church council and elders agree on a large cross for the crucifix, we'll replace the embarrassingly small temporary plain wooden cross (aka "naked cross" or Advent Cross as they're called).

Our congregation also has this same picture:

It took me a moment to notice what was going on with the tents in the upper-right corner of the painting. It's the Israelites camped in the wilderness with the bronze serpent. That's absolutely brilliant.

This is by Lukas Cranach. In our Chapel in the basement of our Church we have a reproduction of the Altar Piece from St. Mary's Church (the Castle Church) in Wittenburg; note Luther preaching "Christ Crucified" in the bottom panel; upper left, baptism; middle The Last Supper (the Eucharist); and on the right hand side, Confession and Absolution:

I had to know that painting in Art Appreciation class in high school!!! :D Funny how some people want religion out of public schools yet one can't ignore entire periods of art history (since a lot of art relates to Christianity).

There are those who would like to wright some of that out of history.
