  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I actually have stated this in other threads when that allegation has been tossed out there. I also find the idea that atheists don't have morals to be not only ridiculous from a secular standpoint, but also biblically incorrect (his laws are written on our hearts, etc.).
I agree, I don't think that all atheists hate God. I think they hate religion, or religious people, sometimes but not God. If they actually knew God, they wouldn't hate him, so I don't think they actually can hate Him.

I think that he realized that he could have been 'sold' a very bad picture of God, and that God just might have some horrible salespeople working for him, after which he changed to his 'I'm not sure' view.
Which "he" are you referring to?

I don't know about you, but I can only speak for myself. And that's all I ask of everyone here. Speak for yourselves as ex-atheists, and don't presume to speak for others. Is that too unreasonable of a request?

Well, no, because I couldn't "hate" something I didn't believe in - but I did think that if he was real (going by popular traditional Christine doctrine), then he must be a colossal prick and I would never join him even if he was real. The entire concept of such a God was not only illogical but also extremely immoral judging by any human standards. This was at 16-17 age.

But then I realized that maybe that version might be wrong, and that we don't know it all.
Thank you, HighwayMan. :)

Thank you, Flibbertigibbet. :)
You are welcome. :)

Pardon me while I go sort of off-topic for a minute: I do think that because I did not convert until age 43, that I have a different perspective and understanding of the atheist/agnostic than those who have been either raised Christian or who converted fairly early in life (up through the 20's).

I don't think that Christians really mean to offend, or are just crazy stupid and hard-headed - I think they just truly don't understand that someone could really believe that there's no Creator and they think there must be an issue with Him. JMO

I agree. I used to think that atheists were evil and that they basically hated God. After being exposed to society more and more, I realize that they just don't believe, but they don't necessarily hate God. Although, some say that if you don't believe in God, you hate Him - as in, either you love him or you hate him, no other options, you're either for Him or you're against Him.

Well, you are off-topic here, but I'd love to continue this in another discussion.

Why are you here? You're basically dominating a thread directed to people other than yourself. This thread is directed towards ex-atheists. How many times, and in how may ways do I have to repeat this until it finally sinks in???

My post was about atheists hating God, which was the OP. This is what you said earlier:

The topic has to do with atheists hating God. Therefore, it's on-topic.
So I am not sure how my responding about atheists hating God is off-topic.

Also, I have replied 9 times out of 30 total replies. I think if I dominated it, it'd be more than half.

You don't know anything about being an ex-atheist, because you've never been an atheist. All you're doing here is theorizing and speaking for others. That's not what I intended for this thread. Don't you have anything better to do with your time?

Sheesh!!

According to you, "The topic has to do with atheists hating God. Therefore, it's on-topic."

My post had to do with atheists hating God.

EDIT: If you wish to argue this, please create a new thread.

You two sound like my children arguing.

Not another word, or I'll bang your heads together. Angellica, the title of thread is "Question for ex-Atheists". While your opinion may be on target, you are actually not the target interviewee.

Now, if you two don't cut it out immediately, you will have to stand in the center of the room, hold hands and say nice things about each other for 10 minutes straight. (my kids HATE this)

Sorry for the derail, Bear - but ya'll are making me nuts with the bickering. Call it a momentary, aggravation-induced bit of hysteria.

You know, timing is everything. I had already decided not to reply to her anymore, and to let her have the last word. I thought it would die out and we could get back to serious discussion. But, here you come, after the fact, propping yourself up as some mommy figure or referee, stirring things up again. Well, all of this is off-topic, and I don't need a mommy figure or someone talking down to me. So, keep your off-topic judgments to yourself. Thanks.

Let's get back on topic, shall we?

Did you hate God and blame God for bad things when you were an atheist?

My post was intended to be humorous.

Your OP doesn't exactly lend itself to discussion. As an ex-atheist, I did not hate God nor blame Him for bad things. I tended more often to blame humorless, aggressive, anal-retentive, my way or the highway-type people for making life miserable. (some things must take awhile to change following conversion. I hear the road a-callin' me.)

Discussion, honest feedback, whatever....I just asked a question.

I tended more often to blame humorless, aggressive, anal-retentive, my way or the highway-type people for making life miserable.

For me, those who lie after the fact, control freaks, and those who dish out thinly veiled insults are a bit annoying, but I really don't blame them for anything in my life.
