Sorry - Quakers are definitely protestant.

The only other group that seems to have no consensus on whether they are protestant or not are the Messianics. We have our origins in Orthodox and Chassidic Judaism, NOT any church group.

Why not? By my hasty count, our friend has now had the following suggested to him as "the one" to look into--

Orthodox
Catholic
Oriental Orthodox
Protestant (with Quakers)
Non-denominational
No church at all

and Messianic.

Has anyone been left out? Some of the cults, I guess.

I was going to say the Methodist/Holiness/Pentecostal family of denominations, but I guess that is where he came from (Church of the Nazarene)

And of course those are all descended from the Anglicans.

Poultry in motion ....
I have a silkie setting on eggs right now - mostly Jersey Giant x Buff Orpington cross.

She likes to brood in summer - and we set them up for privacy in the garage so the other chickens won't mess with them. So she needs ventilation and a fan. Things were MUCH easier on the farm in a big walk-in coop where I had a battery of very large broody boxes I could close off with a gate.

I miss the muscovies. They are so resilient, they raise LARGE broods (usually 12-16) on their own without much need for me to do anything. They usually chose a corner of the goat barn and did their thing. Ducklings were strong enough to leap up the threshold from day 1.

At least he asked about two of them. :)

The dangers of asking about Church in the intro forum I guess. ;)

I agree that they are now especially Evangelical Quakers, but at the outset they were not. Protestants preach sola scriptura, and the early Quakers did not, believing that the seat of authority lies in revelation by the Holy Spirit confimed by scripture. They stood against branches of Protstantism.

Protestants preach sola scriptura,
Not all protestants hold to that.

Many (like Anglicans and Methodists) hold more to prima scriptura; scriptures FIRST instead of ONLY.

That is pretty much where us Messianics fall as well.

I think the following would put Fox outside of any chuch:
  • Rituals can be safely ignored, as long as one experiences a true spiritual conversion.
  • The qualification for ministry is given by the Holy Spirit, not by ecclesiastical study. This implies that anyone has the right to minister, assuming the Spirit guides them, including women and children.[4]
  • God "dwelleth in the hearts of his obedient people": religious experience is not confined to a church building. Indeed, Fox refused to apply the word "church" to a building, using instead the name "steeple-house", a usage maintained by many Quakers today. Fox would just as soon worship in fields and orchards, believing that God's presence could be felt anywhere.[18]
  • Though Fox used the Bible to support his views, Fox reasoned that, because God was within the faithful, believers could follow their own inner guide rather than rely on a strict reading of Scripture or the word of clerics.
