  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've heard some songs by British writers. Tim Hughes, Matt Redman (At least I think they're from Britain) There's also some songs by Australians (mostly Hillsong) But the majority of the songs that I listen to are written by Americans.
I'm sure the reason that you don't hear many songs by Americans is because, well, you're not in America. ;)

EDIT: Wow, I really need to change my signature. I guess that's what you get for being gone for months.

SOME???!?!? I think most praise and worship songs played around the world in churches are from Hillsongs. And not only in English speaking places, cause in many places they translate them.

bytheway - we sing about half those songs in our church (Australia).

What resources are most of you using in your churches? We primarily use Resource (Noelene Prince); The Source (Graham Kendrick); and Hillsong. We also use the New Church Hymnal/Resource Hymns, Scripture In Song (pre-1990 stuff!) and miscellaneous stuff from other sources (like songs which can be downloaded for free). Interesting discussion...

Cheers,
Ruby

I'm sure we all sing more songs from around the world than we know. At our church we'll sing anything that gives glory to God from old hymns written in the old King James language to 'Bayeti Incosi' which I believe is Swahili (spellcheck) for King of Kings. Martin Smith (Delirious, England), Robin Mark (Northern Ireland), Third Day (USA), Hillsongs (Australia).

Praise and Worship is an international language. It's good to write songs that reflect where you're from though. We sing a lot of songs by a chap called Godfrey Birtill who encourages people to sing the 'lament', crying out for the city's and town's in which we live. Probably best known for 'Outrageous Grace'. Suppose that's going into intercesion though.

Intersting story about Mr Birtill, he was invited over to the USA by a community of native Navajo Indians who wanted him to teach them some of his songs. He went and encouraged them to write their own songs regarding their own struggles, and of course their own style of praise. Since then they have released two CD's made up of thier own songs.

I moved to France last year, and we sing songs I've never heard of before, usually in French. A few of them are translations of songs I've sung before in English (Lord, I Lift Your Name On High to name one), but the majority are new to me. Whoever mentioned language as a factor has a good point. I'm familiar with most of the songs listed on the above CDs; many of those were popular in the churches I attended in the US. Some American-written songs include:

Forever--Chris Tomlin
Awesome God--Rich Mullins
Famous One--Chris Tomlin/Jesse Reeves
We Fall Down--Chris Tomlin
Be Glorified--Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, Jesse Reeves
King of Glory--Mac Powell
Salvation--Charlie Hall

There are many others ofcourse. As an American, I'm very grateful for our U.K. believers and their contribution to worship music. I may have more pw CDs from that side of the pond ( ... now I'm that side of the pond). Actually, I'm just grateful for English-language music!!!
