Question about yelling entire sermons...

I regularly attend worship services in my town, but during the week, I like to listen to religious services on stations like TBN, Word Network, etc.

One thing I've noticed is that lately many of the ministers/pastors/bishops, etc are YELLING their entire sermon.

My ears don't like the sound of a person yelling, so it's hard for me to even get to the WORD because of the constant yelling.

I can understand raising one's voice (and even sometimes yelling) to make a point, but the whole sermon?

What is behind this trend? It tends to sound more 'theatrical' than genuine to me.

OH, I know what you mean! , It isn't just yelling, in most cases its screaming! And the inhaling inbetween each screamed sentance, sounds like many of them have Emphasema! To me it is a big turn-off, you find no where in the Bible people being shouted at, but you do see that shouting causes destruction, as in Joshua and the bringing down of Jericho.

I think they are trying to compeat with all else that is on TV, notice how the commercials blare horribly loud music at you and the advertisement is screamed at you?

It just makes me CRAZY. It pains me to have to change the channel on 'the Word' but sometimes I just can't stand the screaming and theatrics...espcially for 30 straight minutes...

There is much that can be said for timing when it comes to changing the tone, volume and speed of your voice when speaking. At some points, you do need to get louder in order to emphasize a point. So I also do not understand the purpose for yelling an entire sermon. On the other hand, I think culture might play something into it as well. Many charismatic preachers insist on full-audience participation and reaction, for instance, and a lot of them yell because it gets the adrenaline pumping and they are excited about it. Most of the churches I have been to, though, have a more, shall we say, restrained manner. I kind of like to go between the two extremes myself - using some times to speak louder, and others to speak softer... some times to wander around the stage, and others to stay in one spot behind the pulpit. I know I do it, and I'll admit that a lot of it is subconscious and can be seen as somewhat theatrical and entertaining. Yet every preacher has their own eh... tendencies. One that I know of looks like a football quarterback about to receive the ball for the play as he's preaching. Once again, subconscious.

Down here in the southern US, we call those the "Holy Hiccups".

While I don't preach that way, and I don't respond well to those messages that are "screamed", there are those that do. As I said in another thread, God gives us each a "style" so that we can reach more people. There are people that may not respond to God's delivery through me, but when Highland Watchman speaks, it works! And vice versa.

I love to hear "storyteller" preacher -- and that's my "style". But other people don't listen to that -- but they may respond to the screaming.

JMHO....

I'm all for individual style, but sometimes it just doesn't feel genuine to me when some speakers do it.

I actually like a wide variety of styles - from the storyteller to the charismatic...

CloneNoMore - do you have any MP3's online where we could be blessed with your message?

Not yet, but I am currently working on a website. God has really laid it on my heart to get this site up and going. I plan to put my "ramblings" there...

My pastor is the same, but he's different. He preaches as a normal level and tells jokes and stuff, but when he's making a point, he'll raise his voice, but not like those other preachers. Pastor Jim Combs is the top 10% of all pastors in America and every top pastor I know or have seen preach, does it the same way. They connect with you at a personal level, then when they make a point, they just bring it. When I preach, I just elevate my voice a little from the normal talking rate.

All this does fire up the emotions, it doesn't necessarily drive the message home for me, and I find it rather pointless and obnoxious to continuously shout. I think this whole "screaming" trend has become a fad among certain churches, one of which I was a part of. I remember how my ex-pastor would preach, not necessarily loud or soft, but I noticed there was a trend over time where he would start raising his voice during his sermons. Needless to say I found it near-boring, never did anything for me. :-/

The yelling/screaming pastors/preachers are a HUGE turn off to me and I refuse to belong to any church that participates in those kinds of sermons. Thankfully, I don't think I'll ever find a Catholic Church like that. ;)

lol at Pentecostal.

Well my pastor not only screams and yells but kicks and rolls on the floor and if that dont get out attention he brings out the snakes.

Okay, I lied. Sorry. You have to admit it sounded good though.

I keep wanting our preacher to get an organ player to slap a few keys between sentences like the black pastors have. At least an "and uh" in between words.
