  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Please avoid The Message. It is a very bad and dangerous paraphrase. Please check out this article that compares The Message to other translations.

Generally I find exposes like this unconvincing. They tend to be made by KJV literalists. However in this case even as a liberal Christian I find the examples troubling.

An alternative you might consider is the Common English Bible. It's not a paraphrase, but it manages to be about as readable as a paraphrase. It has decent translations of all the passages in that URL. The CEB does not use the term homosexual, as it is anachronistic. Instead they refer to participants in same-sex intercourse. (The difference is that "homosexual" refers to people of a specific "orientation", whereas Paul surely intended to cover simply anyone who did those particular actions, without thought of an orientation. Unless you think that's not what he had in mind at all, a position that no major translation I'm aware of takes.)

I agree that you often have to be careful when people compare translations, because they are often KJV onlyists.

for the record, Justin Peters is NOT a KJV onlyist.

I have been wanting to pick up a copy of "The Message". I have heard that reading more than one version is beneficial. Also, I want to use it to help me get through some of the older OT books which I have not read from start to finish.
I have a hard copy of the Message, but I seldom sit down and just continuously read it as I might the NIV or the ESV, or even the KJV.

I keep it in my five-part parallel screen version to compare various passages, though.

Something that might help you get through the harder OT books, such as the prophets, is to find a good study bible. I saw the prophets in a totally different light once I understood some of the historical background, how they related to each other, and how they related to the history books:

Since The Message is a paraphrase that markets itself as a paraphrase (as opposed to a paraphrase that markets itself as a translation, like the NLT), I have no real problem with it, although, since I really don't use paraphrases, I don't use it myself.

"The Message" is not a Bible. It is a hyper-paraphrase which very frequently obscures the meaning of the original text. It cannot be seriously used for doctrinal study the way one would use a formal Bible translation. It is useful for edification -- for adding some spice to one's devotional-reading. It is certainly not a complete loss; "The Message" can be a source of blessing to many, and I, too, enjoy some of its author's clever paraphrases. But don't confuse Eugene Petersen's "The Message" with the Bible.

Yours in Christ,

James Snapp, Jr.

Some people hate it. Sometimes that's because they see the exact wording as divine in some sense. Sometimes it's just because it challenges the way they have been reading the text and they don't like that.

Occasionally the americanisms or anachronisms do grate a bit, though.

the first part would be me... i really cannot be doing with the message.

I believe the words of Moses are divinely inspired and look for translations to be as conistent as possible. I want to know what the text says, not what you get in a paraphrase which is essentially a commentary dressed up as a bible.

but yes the bit about americanisms and the like is also something that really irks me.

Except "what the text says" is in Hebrew & Greek idioms expressed in Greek and Hebrew words.

I have read some of the message and like the way some verses are brought out like this one:

I don't really use it when I get down to business! I always go running back to KJV, NKJV, AMP, NASB, NIV, NLT!

Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Matthew 11:28-30 MSG
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me---watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
