Hey all, A friend of mine's best friend killed herself (hung in her bedroom), and she had her funeral at a baptist church. My question is, why was she able to do this? Isn't suicide a mortal sin? And.. In a Christian belief, is she going to hell?

I'll advance in saying the answer doesn't worry me, I didn't know her, I'm asking out of curiosity. The girl was in her teens also.

thanks! :)

I think you will find it's the Catholic church that labelled suicide a "mortal sin", not the bible.

Suicide shows lack of faith that God can deliver her from the situation, but one can't from that alone say she is going to hell.
Best concentrate on the living and first make sure you know what salvation is,

The issue of suicide is never directly addressed in the Bible. Some consider it selfishness, others believe the person who commits it is so detached from reality that God will have mercy. Only God knows what happens, and everyone is a unique individual and case, but I do know that I wouldn't recommend suicide to anyone, nor would I want to risk my last act on earth to be sinful.

Baptists do not believe in mortal sin. Sin is sin. If a person is a believer in Jesus Christ, and has accepted Him as savior, there is nothing that person can do in the future that would keep them from spending eternity with Him.

I had a pastor, at a Baptist church, whose son committed suicide at 18 years old. They mourned his death, but are assured their son is in heaven because he made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ when he was a child.

Suicide should never be taken lightly, it is always a horrible loss when a young person is driven to end their own life, regardless if we knew them well or not.

However.. to answer your question.. I do not know if she is going to Heaven or Hell, that is in the hands of a Loving God, whom she is now with, to decide her fate after her mortal life has ended.

As for it being a mortal sin, and all that, one could argue that suicide is "self murder" and as such, it is a sin, "Thou shall not Kill" however, it is neither the place or the time to discuss such matter when there is a young lady who was so distraught that she felt that they only thing she could do was end her own life. I believe there is more at play in the grand scheme of her life then if this was a sin or not, sadly, however the scheme of her life has ended, and we might and most likely will never know why she chose this path or this fate for herself. I shall mourn her death and her passing, and pray that she has found peace in the presence of our Loving God.

God Bless

I don't believe that any of us can say whether a person who commits suicide will go to heaven or to hell. My husband is a pastor and has to officiate tomorrow at a funeral for a 17-year-old boy who hanged himself because his girlfriend broke up with him. This is probably the most challenging funeral hubby has ever had to do. He is going to preach about the mercy and grace of God and the hope that we have if we trust in Him.

As a Christian, I am thankful that God is the judge and that we humans don't have that responsibility because He probably would let some people into heaven that we wouldn't. He knows their hearts, and we don't. We don't know people's thoughts as they were dying; we don't know if God spoke to them somehow; we don't know if they perhaps repented at the last moment; we don't know if they were too emotionally distraught and maybe even mentally ill to think rationally about what they were doing. I'm content to let God sort all that out, and I have faith that His decisions are both fair and merciful.

In the Bible, Samson killed himself by knocking a pagan temple down on top of himself and a bunch of Philistines (see Judges 16). He committed murder/suicide, yet he is included among those who are commended for their faith in Hebrews 11. This alone shows that the Bible doesn't automatically condemn everyone who commits suicide to hell.

I am a Baptist, and we believe that once a person accepts Christ as their Savior they are saved forever. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.

Romans 8:38-39 (NIV) says, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Suicide is a sad and horrible event. I can understand this because my sister and brother have both tried to commit suicide. They both suffer from depression; one of them is Bipolar.

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;" 1 Corinthians 6:19

I'm going to take a guess and say that it's sinful to destroy the temple of the Holy SPirit, and if it was sinful and she didn't have a chance to repent, I guess she's going to Hell?

I really don't know.

The Bible also says:

Mark 12:31
"The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'There is no commandment greater than these.""

So you should care about this person.

The Bible makes no such distinction as "mortal" sin or "venial" sin. That's just another doctrine made up by Catholics.

If the girl was born again, then, in the words of the late Ruth Bell Graham, "God may not have called the girl home, but He has welcomed her home".

Now, if she wasn't a Christian, then you'd be right in asking why her funeral is being held in a Baptist church.

Suicide is devastating. Imagine what the parents have to go through. I could never ever wish any of this upon my worst enemy.

I couldn't even imagine trying to live through this without knowing where my child was going to end up, or knowing he wouldn't be with me in glory.

To have a child who professed his/her faith, I think it would devastate me if he/she was denied admission into heaven because they took their lives. I think God sees into the inner most desires of our heart, and to most Christians, they don't live to die.

The way I see it, God has been through life with us in the best times, why would he desert us in the worst of times? I don't think he would
