  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Nobody is born a believer. You can be raised in the faith, but you do not become a Christian until you've made that faith your own, deciding to become a disciple of Christ. It's not a tradition that you follow that makes you a Christian, it is an inward commitment to follow Jesus after asking His forgiveness and cleansing for all your sins.

twistedsketch is correct. Some people believe infant baptism saves, but it doesn't. Personally I don't believe in baptising infants. Our church has child dedications, which are very similar, but without the sprinkling. Basically the parents are dedicating their child to the Lord and pledging to raise them in a loving Christian home. We as a congregation agree to influence this child with Christian values and a place to worship and fellowship. But each person must make his or her own commitment to Christ.

I just wanted to mention something else. I saw your post about your 5 year-old half brother. Children are under God's grace until they reach the age of accountability, which is different for each child. Many feel it's around the age of 12, but only God knows. Until you understand right from wrong in God's eyes, I believe God is merciful and if a child dies, they go to heaven. Some will disagree, but this is pretty mainstream in Christianity. I know the Roman Catholic Church taught they go into "limbo", but I'm not sure if this is still recognized. I see no Biblical evidence for it though.

God bless you and welcome to the family of God!

Being "born again" is something that has been invented only recently in Christian history. It refers to having Jesus "enter your heart" and changing your life and such.

Baptism washes away original sin. That is the the true "being born again." From there we receive Jesus in the Eucharist every week (or more if you go more) at Mass.

As twistedsketch has already said you're not really born a Christian. Under the Catholic worldview baptism is what the "born again" part. However, the sacrament of Confirmation exists for a reason. That is where you choose to truly dedicate yourself to the Lord and the Church.

And just for fun, Catholics are Christian.

Thanks that helps. I hate it when people say Catholics are Christians even though its true. The reason I converted is because I was unhappy with my life and being Catholic and becoming a Christian made me a better person and I am more in touch with God than I ever was.

That's very old, actually. John chapter 3 old. Book of Acts old.

Sadly, confirmation doesn't mean very much to far too many Christians that go through such classes, Catholic or not. Even worse, too many Catholics rely on baptism that was done to them when they were little and never really follow Jesus. They've never really made the decision themselves to become disciples.

I do not dispute that. Many Catholics do rely on what Jesus did for their salvation rather than what they do in the church for salvation. Such Catholics are Christians. BTW, the same principle applies to people of all denominations.

(Amen, twistedsketch)

We are born again when we make the decision to rely on Christ alone to save us by paying for all our sins on the cross, and rely on Him alone to get us to Heaven without counting on our good works or promises or church.

If we do not rely on Him alone to save us, we are not born again (saved, receivers of eternal life, Christians). Even if we are the best person that ever lived (next to Jesus).

John 3:16-18
16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
(NIV)
Eph 2:8-9
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
(NIV)

Being born again refers to being born into Christ. When you accept Jesus Christ into your heart you are born again. You are born in him. You live in him and he lives in you. The term Christian simply refers to the fact that you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he died for your sins at Calvary.

The biggest problem with denominationalism is the thought that you are christian by association. The bible tells us this is not true! You have to accept Christ as your lord and savior that is the ONLY way to become a true Christian.
Romans 10:9-10 "..if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord'," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Eph 2:8-9"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast."

picture yourself in a room with two walls on one wall is painted sin and on the other wall is painted God. When born we are facing the wall that says sin as we grow up we may look at that wall 10 years some may look at it 40 years and some may always look at that wall but some TURN to the wall that says God this TURN is when we are born again. I hope this helps . millerrod

No one is born a Christian. No one becomes a Christian by being baptised (at any age), going to church, growing up in a religious family, etc. The only way to become a Christian is having a change of heart and placing your trust in Jesus to do for you what you cannot do for yourself. Our soul life, which is encased in the "coats of skins" once BIRTHED (at conception) into this world, comes into this world through the fallen adamic nature or Adams spirit who has dominion on the earth. The fallen adamic nature works to possess our souls. When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord AND Savior (a free will act) we conceive Christ nature within us. This is the re-birth, or born again. Now there are two natures; fallen Adam and Jesus Christ our new life. Both natures are viing to possess our souls. Where the old man, Adam works through fear and condemnation through the Law and compels by force and fear to observe that Law, Jesus draws men to Himself through love and calls men to possess their souls through patience in that same Spirit of Love in Him. We can choose to "put on" one nature or the other but if we are unaware of this free will choice we are more likely to slip into the old nature by force of habit.
Old wine- Adam- old man- law, sin, death
New wine- Christ- new man- grace, love, life

"And no man, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he sayeth the old is better."

If you become a reborn Christian as you put it or Born again Christian, this is when you make a proper decision to follow the Lord, walk his path of rightousness, when we are born as a baby we are immediately in the world of sin, this is why we make a commitment to follow according to Gods will.

MY DEAR BROTHER IN CHRIST,

A small, but perhaps important point--being a Christian entails much more that just "believing" in who Jesus was and what He did. Even the demons "believe".(James 2:19) Being a Christian entails the idea of being an active FOLLOWER OF CHRIST not just a passive believer in Him.
The faith that saves us is a COMPLETE faith: not just the mind believing and the tongue confessing, but the whole man trusting in the living God. This means our faith and our relationship with God are living and growing, so that our faith flows and affects our actions, or it dies. Salvation is a process, not an event. We must nurture our faith in God and our love for Him and for our neighbor through our works. As James writes, "WHAT DOES IT PROFIT, MY BRETHREN, IF SOMEONE SAYS HE HAS FAITH BUT DOES NOT HAVE WORKS? CAN FAITH ALONE SAVE HIM? BUT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW, O FOOLISH MAN, THAT FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD?" FOR AS THE BODY WITHOUT THE SPIRIT IS DEAD, SO FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD ALSO."(James 2:14,17,20,26)
In other words: Belief and Faith plant the Seed of Christ in our hearts, but it is our Works which bear the fruits and qualify us to be called Christians.

WITH LOVE FOR ALL IN CHRIST,

ephraimanesti

No one starts out a christian here on earth we are born into a world of sin, even though all we have done is been born. Being a christian is when you accept Jesus into your heart saying a savlation prayer there is no special one just hae to say the main things like I am sorry, I know you died and rose agaon on the thrid day, etc....... There is a age when we are held accountable it's 12 years old or 13 one or the two. Until than you are under the mercy and grace of God b/c you don't understand and manty types of things than again it could be depending on the person. We are all sinners and have felt short. You can still be saved before than though for me it was when I was six almost seven years old so I have been saved 7 almost 8 years. So you can get so you don't have to be 12 in order to get saved just when you blieve God is real and you arre ready to give you life to him. Just now tomorrow is not promise and for me don't know when the Jesus is coming back.:) God Bless you all indeed:)
