  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question about pride.

I'm confused and I hope someone can help. I don't know the Bible as well as others but I have seen a few threads talking about how pride is a sin. I was wondering if there are different kinds of pride. I was taught by my mother from a young age that I should take pride in the work I do. I always try to but I don't and never would put my work before God. So I guess what I am asking is that if you accomplish something your proud of and take pride in it, is that a sin?? Thanks for the input. :)

I think there is "OK pride" and then there is "sinful pride". OK pride would be pride where you feel proud about your work, for instance, but also recognize and remember that it is GOD who should have the honor and thanks for blessing you with the talent, opportunity, gifts etc etc so that you could get that work done.

Some Scriptures:
Col 3:23 "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"

1 John 2:16 " For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."

Mark chapter 12:28-34 > In this scripture, a scribe sees how Jesus is answering people very well; so he asks Jesus which commandment is the greatest of all. Jesus says the greatest commandment is to love God with all we've got; and the second commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves.

To this, the scribe says to Jesus > “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He. And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

So, the scribe evaluated the answer that Jesus gave, but Jesus did not get in a huff about being evaluated, even though Jesus is our Judge. So, Jesus did not have a pride problem of conceit, even though He is greater than we are.

Also, the scribe added to what Jesus said. I see how he actually improved on the answer, by saying that all sacrifices are not as great and good as loving God and caring for our neighbor as ourselves. But Jesus did not get into a huff, though He is the Teacher; He did not have a pride problem about someone giving more than Jesus did in His answer.

So, this shows me how Jesus is humble; He might take pride in how He speaks the truth, but He is not of selfish and conceited pride which has Him thinking no one else should evaluate Him or improve on and make things clearer about something that He says.

So, wrong pride has to do with conceit, of feeling we are more than others and no one else has something to offer along with whatever we do and say.

But I can see how Jesus took pride in how He was humble, not conceited about who He talked to. He did not judge about who was good enough to get His attention.

Scott,

Yes, there are different denotations of the word 'pride.' One of those denotations generally means to feel confident in the things you do. Another denotation is one that is almost synonymous with 'arrogance' and an unwillingness to hear moral criticism from other people.

So, yes--you can 'take pride' in a job well done. Once the job is done, and if it is done well, just remember to remember the value of humility.

Peace

I think the word "pride" is sometimes used to mean things like "satisfaction" or "sense of accomplishment" or "gratified." But pride in the sense of arrogance, egotism, conceit, or self-importance, is condemned by God in His Word.

1 Corinthians 1:27-31
27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;
28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,
29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.
30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God--and righteousness and sanctification and redemption--
31 that, as it is written, "He who glories, let him glory in the Lord."

I don't think what you're describing here is pride in the negative sense of the word. Pleasure at doing something well is not a bad thing at all. If, however, you begin to feel self-important as a consequence of your success in your work, well, that is something you ought not to do.

I understand what you are saying. Taking pride in what you do is fine. Just don't let it go to your head. Thank you for sharing.
