In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Critical Evaluation of The Two Babylons, by Alexander Hislop
Dustin Segers

Throughout this book, Hislop makes an attempt to show that the Roman Catholic Church is nothing more than a re-constitution of ancient Babylon. One way that Hislop attempts to demonstrate this is by documenting numerous references to the similarity of words between the ancient Chaldee and Hebrew languages due to their close phonetical relatedness (see I.H.S. example below). Other similarities and generalizations were used to basically debunk the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. These similarities were used by Hislop to show how pagan Babylonian beliefs infiltrated the ancient Hebrew culture and that these pagan beliefs were adopted into the sacraments, doctrines, and general practices of the Roman Catholic Church. There are other portions of the book where this same basic logic is used, but it does not seem to be consistent with the argument that is posited and unsubstantiated generalizations are made. For example, on page 164, in relation to the letters that are found on the Catholic eucharist wafer, Hislop argues that the letters I.H.S. do not signify 'Jesus the Savior of all men' (in Latin) but instead these letters signify "'Isis, Horus, Seb,' that is, 'The Mother, the Child, and the Father of the gods," - in other words, 'The Egyptian Trinity.'" Hislop provides no footnoted documentation for this assertion and it seems to be a logically inconsistent and broadly generalized statement without any historical or literary evidence to support it. Another problem is that the actual letters that are used on the wafer would only be meaningful to a person that is familiar with the English or Latin alphabet. The ancient worshippers of Egypt were not familiar with this alphabet, because it was yet to be invented. Thus, it is a chronological impossibility that the ancient Egyptians would have been able to come to the conclusions that the letters on the wafer represent their false trinity.

Note: In reality, it is a faulty Latin transliteration of the Greek contraction "Jesus", and was later rationalized to Iesus Hominum Salvator = Jesus Saviour of Men (mankind). This would also fit with Catholic transubstantiation doctrine that regards the wafer as becoming the body of Christ. -- JPH, with thanks to a reader)

Another example of this type of inconsistency can be found in chapter three, page 99, where Hislop is discussing the eighty-fifth psalm. Hislop states that the eighty-fifth Psalm was written soon after the Babylonian captivity and because of the captivity, they were inspired to write the eighty-fifth psalm. Conservative Christian scholars hold that the majority of the Psalms, including psalm eighty-five, were written about the tenth century B.C. So, if psalm eighty-five was written at least 400 years before Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah, how is it possible that this tenth century B.C. Psalm was written after the Hebrews came out of Babylon? Unless Hislop held to a later date for the writing of the Psalms or a much earlier invasion and subsequent deportation of the Jews to Babylon, this seems to be an irreconcilable inconsistency in Hislop's scholarship.

Section five of chapter six focuses on a discussion of the name of the beast and the number of his name. Hislop posits that the name of the beast was related to the name of the ancient god Saturn, and thus each of the ancient letters for this name spelled out S-T-U-R respectively. According to Hislop, these letters can be added up and give the number 666, which implied that the pope, who was prefigured by the ancient pagan god Saturn, was the antichrist (p. 269). This seems to be another example of the broad generalizing that was discussed earlier.

Concluding Summary -- The Two Babylons could be perplexing to the new Christian due to the scholarly and hermeneutical inconsistencies used to debunk Roman Catholicism. This reviewer cannot recommend this book for serious study on the basis of 3 reasons; 1.) Hermaneutical and interpretive inconsistencies committed by the author, 2.) Outdated scholarly sources and the fact that The Two Babylons was written well over 100 years ago, and 3.) Conclusions drawn based on false phonetic relationships and broad generalizations.

Funny, I've done a lot of research into mythology of various cultures, and have never come across any sun goddesses with names like those. Furthermore, any deity associated with the sun is usually male.

Sorry, but when I research, I go to reputable sources...

Well since the facts I gave are readily available, and a cursory study of the topic would reveal that to you, I have a hard time believing those statements. You say you go to reputable sources but the truth has escaped you. And when you see it, you fight against it rather than seek the truth. This is what religion does to a mind.

Alexander Hislop - The Two Babylons

This book was initially published in 1853 as a pamphlet, then greatly revised and expanded and released as a book in 1858.

He claimed the Roman Catholic Church was a Babylonian mystery cult, and pagan, whereas Protestants worshipped the true Jesus and the true God. He contended that Roman Catholic religious practices are actually pagan practices grafted onto true Christianity during the reign of Constantine. At this point, he alleged, the merger between the Roman state religion and its adoration of the mother and child was transferred to Christianity, merging Christian characters with pagan mythology. The Goddess was renamed Mary, and Jesus was the renamed Jupiter-Puer, or "Jupiter the Boy".

Hislop's theory was that the goddess, in Rome called Venus or Fortuna, was the Roman name of the more ancient Babylonian cult of Ishtar, whose origins begun with a blonde-haired and blue-eyed woman named Semiramis.

According to Hislop, Semiramis was an exceedingly beautiful white woman, who gave birth to a son named Nimrod, a large, ugly black man, and later married him, thus founding Babylon, and its religion, complete with a pseudo-Virgin Birth. This he called a foreshadowing of the birth of Christ, prompted by Satan. Later, Nimrod was killed, and Semiramis, pregnant with his child, claimed the child was Nimrod reborn.

Hislop claimed that the cult and worship of Semiramis spread globally, her name changing with the culture. In Egypt she was Isis, in Greece and Rome she was called Venus, Diana, Athena, and a host of other names, but was always prayed to and central to the faith which was based on Babylonian mystery religion.

Then, according to Hislop, Constantine, though claiming to convert to Christianity, remained pagan but renamed the gods and goddesses with Christian names to merge the two faiths for his political advantage, under Satan's guidance.

The book has been severely criticized for its lack of evidence, and in many cases its contradiction of the existing evidence: for instance, the Roman state religion before Christianity did not worship a central Mother Goddess, and Jupiter was never called "Jupiter-Puer." Likewise, Semiramis lived centuries after Nimrod, and could neither have been his mother, nor married him. Hislop also makes unacceptable linguistic connections and fanciful word plays, e.g. the letters IHS on hosts in Catholic Holy Communion are alleged to stand for Egyptian deities Isis, Horus and Seth, but in reality they are an abbreviation for Ihsous, the Latin spelling of Jesus's name in Greek (Ιησους), although popularly, they stand for the Latin Iesus Hominum Salvator meaning Jesus, Savior of Mankind (which also fits the teaching of Transubstantiation, where the bread and wine are said to become the body and blood of Christ).

Despite this, and the fact that his book, if proven true, would discredit Christendom as a whole, since the concepts that it attacks in Catholicism are shared by some Protestants, this book was, and still remains in some circles, a staple of anti-Catholic polemic. Hislop is a favorite source of Jack Chick, who published reprints of his book, and Dave Hunt, who on occasion alludes to his work. While strong criticisms of this book have been published, it is still considered by many as a definitive work of Protestant Christian apologetics.

There are about a thousand sources that confirm most of what is in the book. I never finished it for the reasons you mentioned in the end of your post. Although Hislop’s methodology has come under fire in recent years because his sources are no longer extant, it’s enough to make you continue your research. A more current study was written by Lew White called Fossilized Customs. Lew is a Messianic Yahudi, Hebrew scholar and etymologist. "Come out of Her my people" is another good fact ladden read which traces the false roots and drops its legacy squarely in the lap of the Roman Catholic Church, many of whose rites and traditions stem directly from the Babylonian mystery religion.

Are you part of the Sacred Name Cult ? I find it odd and telling that you claim no church affiliation in your profile.

* - A case study in poor scholarship.

Don't know anything about that sacred name cult.

Since the difference of what Yahweh has to say in His scriptures and what comes from the pulpit is more frustrating than beneficial, I don't have a "Church". I find fellowship in His word and through His Spirit. I don't go with the masses. I confirm things. I do research. I make sure the one I trust is worthy of trust. I serve Yahweh and not man. I guess that is odd.

IOW, you rely on your own understanding. Fair enough, I'll rely on what Holy Scripture declares to be the Pillar and Foundation of Truth.

Really !?

Yet when I research who Lew White, whom you previously mentioned is, I find this:

The Sacred Name put to Shame

Few Christians are equipped to cope with the theological system that is referred to as the Sacred Name, and as the mainline Christian churches fall deeper and deeper into the gross apostasy that characterizes the end of the age, more and more people are drawn into what appears to be a scripturally sound system. Unfortunately the truth is decidedly different.

The Sacred Name system is an emerging series of doctrines that focuses attention on the actual Hebrew name of the Lord –– YHWH. Usually pronounced ‘Yah-way,’ this name is called the Tetragrammaton by scholars, and is commonly rendered as The LORD in the King James Version of the scriptures.

Fossilized Customs
In this article, we’re going to look at 3 different publications that are being circulated in the Remnant Christian community. The first work, Fossilized Customs, is an independently printed paperback that has been widely circulated and is in its 3rd printing. Written by a man named Lew White, with a publisher out of Louisville, Kentucky, this work is a radical approach to the Sacred Name system.

There are only two honest ways to deal with the Greek term “ekklesia”, which we erroneously translate "Church". When it is being used as a word it must be translated “called-out,” “assembly,” “called-out assembly,” or “out-calling.” When it is being used as a title it must be transliterated “ekklesia.” There are no other valid or rational options. The word/title “church” is erroneous as it is neither a translation nor transliteration of the Greek ekklesia/called-out assembly. Worse, the only linguistic basis for “church” is the name of the Anglo-Saxon sungoddess Circe, the daughter of Helios. Her name was pronounced “Chirch,” and it gave rise to the English words “circle” and “circus.” Circles are symbols for the sun and circuses were known for acts of magic. Also, keep in mind that when determining the legacy of ancient words, it’s the consonants which count, not the vowels. “Circe” and “church” are based upon “crc” with the “h” being silent and thus optional.
Circe is a goddess with an illustrious past. In Greek mythology, Circe was “the daughter of the Sun.” She wore a nimbus or disc of light around her head, identical to the ones Catholics place above Mary’s likeness.

The Bible doesn’t call itself “the Bible” as Biblos is the name of a pagan Phoenician goddess.

“The scroll (biblion – written sheet, roll or book) of the prophet (prophetes – inspiredforth-teller and foreteller who reveals the hidden things of God and future events) Yasha’yah (Hesaias – transliteration of Yasha’yah; from yasha’and Yah meaning: Yah-Has-Saved; errantly transliterated: Isaiah in most English Bibles) was delivered to Him. He unrolled the scroll (biblion – from biblos—the inner bark of the papyrus plant used to make scrolls for writing), and came upon the place (topos) where it was written (grapho – delineated on parchment or described on papyrus with pen or stylus; to express information, convey meaning, and communicate instructions and directions by the use of alphabetic characters):…” (Luke 4:17)

While the papyrus scroll Yahshua unfurled was called a biblion, the inspiration on the scroll was “Grapho,”—the Written Word, Scripture—not Bible. Bible is a moronic transliteration of the Greek word biblos—the papyrus bark used to make written scrolls, sheets, or books. Turns out, sadly, that biblos is from Biblia, of the name of the Canaanite sun goddess. The Phoenician town known for weaving papyrus into scrolls was named in her honor. I am certain that we have offended Yahweh by attributing His Scripture to a sun goddess.
Using “Bible” is more than a careless error or simple mistake. Words like biblion should always be translated. So biblion could be correctly rendered “book or scroll,” but not bible. Moreover, the operative word in the sentence was grapho, meaning the Written Word or Scripture. Since only names are transliterated, when clerics decided to transliterate Biblia into Bible, and not grapho into graphics, they were specifically referring to the name of the pagan goddess, not to the word for scroll, because they would have translated it “book.” Foolishly calling Yahweh’s Written Word by the thing upon which His words were written, if just a mistake, would have rendered the Scriptures “book.” But by transliterating Biblia, the early Roman Catholic priests were unfaithful, not foolish, misattributing the divinely inspired Word to Satan. I keep hearing "Funny, I've done a lot of research into mythology of various cultures...." yet a cursory study should reveal these facts to you. You may want to read Hislop's "Two Babylons" and "come out of her my people" to start off.
This response is filled with so much disinformation and distortion, I don't even know where to begin.

As has been stated, biblios is a long-standing Greek word with a clear etymology not in any way related to the fallacious attribution found above.
Traditionally, the holy scriptureswere divided in the Church as follows:
The Evaggelion (Gospel)
The Old Covenant
The New Covenant

The scriptures were referred to as scriptures, as seen in the Symbol of Faith (Nicene Creed) ca 325/381
Καi Aναστάντα τi τρίτi Iμέρα κατa τaς Γραφάς. (and) rising on the third day, according to the scriptures

The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews, as well as several places in The Apokalypsis (Revelation), we see this term 'book/biblion(s)' being used to describe holy writ.
In short, just one more example of the shoddy work that Hislop did, and his disciples believe without question.

Also- graphe has no more or less sanctified origins than bible/biblios. God did not utter the term on Mount Moriah and enshrine it in gold. Its connotation has come to specify the holy scriptures, but this reification of words (making the word real, as if the combination of letters and sounds was sanctified) is truly idolatrous. We worship God behind the words of scripture, not the words themselves.

Likewise this allegation that Church is a secret handshake word for "daughter of the Sun." This is as ridiculous as finding Mary Magdalene in The Last Supper and thus determining that Jesus was married to her, all part of a secret conspiracy.

I am truly shocked when intelligent, articulate people are duped by such silliness.

I'll go by the Scriptures wherein He is called Iesous. It is fine to Anglicize His name to Jesus. Any group that claims that we must use a Sacred Name is a cult and is practicing a form of occultism. Do a search on Sacred Name, they pop up here at CF every year or so.

Oh and again, His scripture does not say Iesous. Man's does. I have told you this numerous times but it doesn't seem to matter to you. Since the early followers of Yahweh( Yahudim- not Jews) loved and revered their creator, they would never blaspheme and write an erroneous name so they used placeholders. Please think before you type.

Abba Father. Title

Adonai title
Baal-i guise of satan

El singular form of "God" or diety supreme one
Elohim plural form of above word(not name)

Jah
Jehovah No "J" until a few hundred years ago so this is easy to dismiss.
Yahweh This is the closest vocalized name He gave to us 7000 times in scripture. His intent is clear. Our minds are what is muddled.
YHVH
Proponents of this rendering usually say YHVH is most dorrectly Yahvah, as opposed to Yahweh. TheTetregrammation is Yud Heh Vev Heh, but what they are doing is rendering the alphabet which is not always a good way to transliterate. Moreover, most experts in paleo Hebrew render the Hebrew alphabetic pronunciations of these letters “yod” not “yud,” and “weh,” “wah” or “vah” rather than “veh.” While some consider the W sound to be closer to our V sound, I am unaware of any scholar who renders the W as a “vev.”
