  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question about Divorce

I have a friend who was divorced about a year ago. She was saved right before her divorce and begged her husband not to go through with the divorce and to get counciling from the church. He went ahead with the divorce ( he is not a believer) and now she is struggling with a few issues. This was her second marriage, and she would love to marry again and only to a Christian man, so she went for counciling from a pastor at her church. She was told she should reconcile with her husband. She is trying but he is so down on her Christianity and her past mistakes, wont look at himself at all, very self absorbed and rich also! I see her struggle and she is unhappy. My question is this, I know what God says in this matter, a woman should only remarry her husband she divorced but wouldnt that be her first husband? She was dating a man who recently gave his life to God and would love to start dating him again but feels that would be wrong. OPINIONS???

Divorce is sin (especially with fornication) but is also forgivable.

Tell your friend to repent to Jesus and go on with life (and the Christian).

;-)

In Christ,
^^^^ I can't say it any better than this...so I won't even try.

I (I'm sorry to say) am on my third (an last) marrage. This, however is my first marrage that I truly beleive is a marrage that is in of God. I failed over and over when I tried to do it my way. It wasn't until I gave it to Jesus that things started to work out. God forgave me for my sins and gave me a beautiful woman who is also a Christian. I am truly thankful!

I'm going to say a prayer for your friend.

See this is what I think also, but she was told if she prays for a reconciled marriage with her second husband, and trusts in the Lord that is what she should do but I keep questioning, why is that so difficult for her! I want to be a good Christian sister to her but ultimately, I want her to follow what God wants in her life and I pray that all the time. Thanks for your input! It helps!

You'll notice that a lot of Christian marriages (of denominations which force a guilt trip about irreconcilable differences) are neurotic, tense, and dysfunctional. This is for a reason. If you're not compatible, you're not going to be. "Church counseling" and other things are not going to change the fact that two people are not going to be able to continue on in a happy, healthy marriage if they can not even stand to be with each other.

Im not sure what you mean when you say "Not by accident, you may be sure, do the Christian Scriptures make the father of knowledge a serpent - slimy, sneaking and abominable.
- H.L. Mencken

Can you help me understand what that means?

He's trying to say Satan is his "father of knowledge" like:

Rev 12:9; "The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Too bad the word serpent directly means "enchanter" not a reptile.

No problem, friend.

I take it this is the question:

See this is what I think also, but she was told if she prays for a reconciled marriage with her second husband, and trusts in the Lord that is what she should do but I keep questioning, why is that so difficult for her! I want to be a good Christian sister to her but ultimately, I want her to follow what God wants in her life and I pray that all the time. Thanks for your input! It helps!

What she's talking about is this Law:

Mat 5:32; "Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery."

The Greek word fornication is pornia (where we derive the modern term of porno) and this is the only grounds for divorce in the eyes of Jesus.

He also adds:

Mar 10:11-12; "Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery."

If she was faithful and loyal to her husband (no matter if he believed or didn't [1Co 7:14]) and he divorced her than she's not in sin, period. In fact, the husband would be in transgression and she's free to remarry. She was "put away" not the other way around.

Consider this passage:

John 4:16-18; "Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

This woman was accepted by Jesus.

Hope that's what you were asking!

Under the Blood,

This is so true.

And never mind about who is/isn't a "believer" or who got "saved" at some point in the marriage or seperation....that is entirely irrelevant and is only brought up when people want to convince themselves that their situation is different from all the other marriages that end in divorce. It isn't.
