question about creation

Hello I am chating on another thread about the Bible being without fault. One thing came up, creation. I have a question on one part of it. If someone could help clear this up I would appreciate it.

• Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
  
• Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
  Gen 1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
  Gen 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
  Gen 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
  Gen 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
  Gen 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Could you help explain how there was light in verse 1:3 before God created the stars and moon. I must be overlooking something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Why do you think that light can only come from the sun? Could not the creator who is light himself had provided another light source, or was the source of light himself?

Some have said that God put the order this way becos he knew that in the future, man wld do things like worship the sun (instead of God) as source of life/light. so God is trying to tell us here that the sun aint it, but him.

We don't really know what the nature of the light was that God used in creation. The best analogy I've heard is that it was kind of like a workshop. When a craftsman goes into a workshop to build something the first thing he does is turn a light on.

The other possibility here is that God created light itself at this time. Light as a concept that is.

God just created light....then later he just created objects to house this light...hope that helps

Andrew hit on the exact reason, God was the light, just like he is in revelation, and how moses had to cover himself with a vale because he was too "bright" when he came down off the mountain.

My problem is I am trying to explain this to an athiest which this he will not except. I need to figure a way to say it that makes it a little more easy for him to understand.

Sure, tell him God was the light source. Just like when moses came off the mountain he had to have a vale to keep from blinding people because he shown so bright, it was from being with God.

Actually the entire universe was created in Gen 1:1.

The alternate translation of 1:2 is "...and the earth became without form and void, and darkness came upon the face of the deep..."

The rest of Gen 1 is the reforming of the solar system back into a habitable state.

The question is: what happened between verse one and two to throw it into chaos. Many think it was the rebellion and fall of satan.

At any rate, light already existed in during the week of restoration... it just had to be allowed to shine through the darkness.

Why wasn't the seperation of light and darkness enough in the first day? Why would God need to create lights in verse 14 to seperate the day from the night.
But scientifically, lights only produce light they cannot seperate day and night.

In verse 16 it says the moon shall rule the night. But the revolution of the moon around the earth is independent on the rotation of earth about its axis. So it is only by chance that sometimes the moon appears at night. Verse 16 could have been true if the moon was standing stationary at the opposite direction of the sun's direction.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The original Hebrew for the word "heaven" is "shamayim." This literally means "sky."
