  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well obviously I'm gonna push the Cannon lenses (being the Canon family that we are :D)

When DH got his XTi he got the kit with a lens. It's not bad actually. I actually have a really really great article at work all about Canon lenses... I'll send it to you tomorrow if I remember.

This is what we have right now:
The 18-55 f3.5/5.6 came with the camera

I got DH this for Christmas:
50mm f1.8 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...TF8&coliid=I2OXN75JKSPCJ5&colid=1YSBNNXC1QQNM)

We also have:
A 28-80 f3.5/5.6 USM
and a 75-300 f4.0/5.6 USM

I've decided that from this point forward I'm only going to invest in the canon L series.

This is what I plan on buying with my yearly bonus this year:
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...TF8&coliid=I1LWM0DH0OMI40&colid=3F0GB15XTR68L

And

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009R6WT/ref=wl_it_dp/002-9962719-9460054?ie=UTF8&coliid=IU9A[wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]MIZ57F&colid=3F0GB15XTR68L

That should leave me with a little bit left out of my bonus for a pair of shoes :D

SOTFB, instead of the 70-200mm f/4L, why not the 70-200mm f/2.8L? I know it's a difference in price...but the difference in the lens is pretty big. You'll be able to do a lot more in low light. I have this lens - it's huge and clunky :)D), but I love it. Next to my 50mm f/1.4, it's probably my favorite. I'm very much a low/natural light photographer though. I hate using flash - I like to work with the light that's present, so that makes a big difference in the lenses I choose.

Its expensive, but lenses (especially with the build quality of the L series) will last a whole lot longer than your bodies, therfore they are genrally the better purchase. The more you pay the better they are, and the sharpness of the 24-70 and 70-200 (which ever version you get) is awesome as well as the clarity.

I`m waiting for my 300f4 to come (should be her monday hopefully) and I can`t wait.

Hummm I'll have to read up a but more on that one. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Maybe instead of doing both, I'll just get the f/2.8L?? I'll have to research it a bit more.

Oh yeah - sorry! I guess I wasn't clear! I meant the f/2.8L instead of the f/4L... You'll really be getting a better lens for your money in the long run and you'll be able to do more with it. But definitely don't just take my word for it - research it first. It's a LOT of money! I paid $1600 for my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (I am a big fan of the IS too - especially for those times when a tripod just isn't practical...just don't use the IS in conjunction with the tripod, make sure to turn the IS feature off then. :) ) I get a lot of my gear from beachcamera.com. I reasearched them through reselleratings.com before I ever bought anything, and was pleased with what I saw and have been nothing but pleased with them since I started purchasing. From my experience with them, their customer service has been top notch, and I've gotten everything I've ordered in perfect condition, with super fast delivery times. But, wherever you order from, definitely check them out through resellerratings.com first so that you aren't getting scammed! :)

So do any of you guys use lens hoods? Is it something to invest in?

All the time, they don`t just stop flare (or significantly decrease it) but they also protect the front element. Generally they will come with the lens (at least thats my experience), but if they don`t and you decide to get one, specify which lens it is, allthough some hoods will fit on different lenses, there is only one that is specifically designed for whichever lens you get, one that isn`t designed for use with that lens will cause problems.

Here's a great website.

http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/canon.php

Free printable lenshoods for Canon lenses in PDF format.

Just print them onto black cardboard, cut them out and glue them, then slot them onto your lens! Not as tough as the proper rubber ones, but they stop the flare just as well, and offer some protection, and they are about as cheap as they come!
