I have a stack of study Bibles, Bible commentaries, and concordances and lexicons. I have yet to read a clear explaination of the meaning of YHWH. One book says it means "I am the God who is," another says "I am the I am," another "I am that I am," and still another, "I am who I am."

If there's an honest to goodness Hebrew scholar out there that could help me, I'd be most grateful. The name YHWH is obviously an important word in Scripture, and it seems to be such a shame to have no clarity on it when studying.

Thank you.

Edward,
I'm no Hebrew scholar, but I believe the Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey (NOT YHVH) is not the same as 'EHYEH ASHER EHYEH' (which I believe the best translation to be 'I will be whatever I will be') name. G-d first says the 'EHYEH ASHER EHYEH' name and latter says Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey - which causes some to think 'I will be whatever I will be' to be a translation of Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey. Truth is nobody knows what Yud-Hey-Vav-Hey means, and I personally think its meaning is too holy for us to grasp anyway.

In Mashiach,

When you read the words "I think therefore I am" what does author MEAN to actually say?

So when you read the literal words " Aleph(E)-hey(H)-Yod(Y)-hey(H) Asher Aleph(E)-hey(H)-Yod(Y)-hey(H)", commonly renderred in translation, "I am that(who, what, will..etc) I am", what is it that HaShem is telling us in His GREATNESS?

Notice that this name has to do with all the universe and all creation.

I will tell you- this name means only this in which many things can spring from
Existence that exists.
Does not science deal with what Exists?
Well HaShem every moment- every second, every millionth of a second and all of those numbers which we have no knowledge of- He makes sure that it and we exist because he exists.
However, when time is up for your clock- that is it.
BUT WHAT IF you are one with existence?
WOuld you have a clock exactly?
i know this is getting into other things- just wanted to implant some thihngs into you all.

Dear Edward,
I am not a Hebrew scholar either, but I have been praying for you for 2years -- I am almost beside myself to find you here - it's unbelievable. Let me compose myself enough to attempt a response to your question. I believe scripture interprets scripture if we just let it. As I'm sure you're aware, the book of John is all about Jesus being GOD in flesh. In John 8:58, He says "before Abraham was, I AM!" This is a direct reference to Exodus 3:14 in which the God of Israel (YHWH) sometimes transliterated as "Yahweh" or "Jehova" tells Moses "I am that I am....tell the children of Israel that I AM has sent you." So Jesus clearly is telling these Jewish leaders He is the God of Israel from the Hebrew scriptures. That's why they want to kill him because that was blasphamy, according to Jewish law. Notice also the other uses of Jehova like Jehova Shalom (the God of Peace); Jehova Sabaoth (the God of Hosts or angelic army); Jehova Jira (the God of healing (I think)) etc etc. All this to say He is the beginning and the end. The eternal one without whom, nothing would exist. See Col 1:16 and 1:17. I also know a Messianic Jewish Rabbi here in KC who is WAY smarter than I am - he is indeed a scholar. I can get more if you like. Ed, if this is really you I - - God bless you so very richly. I mean it from the heart.
