What I'll be drinking on the 4th. I'm a British ale pub/beer guy. In fact I could drink Newcastle and nothing else and be fine. However I do live in Texas and will be outside all day so something a bit lighter but still not tasting like urine.

How do you folks make an Old Fashion? When I look around the net all I find are convoluted recipes that include sugar and fruit. A few pics make an Old Fashion look like you dumped a fruit cup into it.

Here's I make it:

1 oz. rye (100% rye)
5 - 7 dashes of bitters
2 cubes of ice

No sugar or fruit is needed. I think folks tend to over do alcohol for plenty of reasons but alcohol can sneak up on you if you are covering it up with fruit and sugar. If you just leave the whiskey alone it'll tell you, most normal folks anyway, when to back off.

First of all let me apologize right off the top for the video I'm linking. This guy is a fundamental KJV only baptist who has a very vivid imagination but unfortunately is no more a biblical exegete than Rick Warren whom he dispises. The vid is long and will probably take a few tugs from that Canadian whiskey y'all are so high on to fight through it.

A couple months ago I meet a friend I haven't seen in years at a Mexican restaurant. He was attending a Methodist church last we spoke but has since moved on to a very different church. This was encouraging to me at first but he then informed me that he was going to an Assembly of God congregation. At that point, rather than getting all into spiritual gifts and all that I changed the subject. When I ordered my meal I also ordered a Dos Equis with lime. He said " you still drink?", I said I did still drink beer. After that I was told he hadn't had a sip of alcohol in ten years. Now as far back as ten years ago, at least to my knowledge this guy did not have a problem with heavy drinking, in fact only a few occasions come to mind where ive even seen a drink in his hand and I've known him all my life. Anyway a few days later he sent me this video and I see a real problem. To this guy drinking =drunkenness.

A friend of the family heard that I was a believer and was rejoicing until someone told him, 'I seen JM at a local sports pub watching UFC, he can't be a Christian.' (I wasn't even drinking I just didn't want to order the pay-preview) The fella was disappointed in me. He thought abstaining from 'things' would make me holy, holier or a believer. I feel sad for folks who get wrapped up in this pietisitic legalism. The sin within me is far greater than anything outside. The devil doesn't make me sin, the old man that continues to live wars within me and I sin willingly. May God have mercy on us!

I'll watch the video tonight, thank you.

To this guy drinking =drunkenness.

That's not an uncommon view it seems, both for religious and secular reasons. A freind of mine is a recovering alcoholic and to her, everyone who drinks, even occasionally is just a drunk who won't admit it.

Some can't except that some people can limit themselves and do enjoy the taste of what they drink. I have come across folks who just won't believe I like the taste of good whiskey. If I didn't like the taste, why would I drink it and then stop drinking it before I get carried away?

I do have sympathy for those who struggle with alcoholism, so I usually don't press the issue and just shrug.
