I’m probably the opposite. I enjoy a light buzz at home with the family, tinkering around the house or patio and prefer not to drink more than a dram in social settings. In social settings I feel the need to be on point, ready to give an answer to anyone who asks as to why I hope in Christ. It’s just a personal choice. I’ve had really good, deep, God honouring conversations at weddings, Christmas parties, etc. that would have been more difficult if I was drinking and doing the M.C. Hammer Chinese typewriter across the dance. Lol

Besides, “wine that maketh glad the heart of man” so we should be able to enjoy a glass.

Yours in the Lord,

Had a puff of Baker Street USA last night. Meh. Last week had my new fav, Beck's Ol' Limey Bast@^d. Rich smoke, lively flavour, great nick kick.

Tonight...a glass of sherry after dinner.

What are you folks doing this long weekend? (Civic Holly Day in our fair Social Democratic Canada).

I pulled out the pipe for the first time in 2 years this week. Had a nice aromatic called Chocolate Fusion and then a navy cut flake with a real bite but good smoke.

Just hanging out around home this weekend. Bike rides, back yard sprinkler action and such.

I want to rant. Someone I know just got fired from a job because she got in an argument with the secretary the boss was nailing. So, she went onto unemployment. She lives with a boyfriend who has hit her simply to save on rent. She is afraid of not having enough money to live on her own, but she refuses to go look for work to make more money because she would lose unemployment checks. So, I said that the job might pay cash, it is worth at least looking at. She said, "My father pays me cash to do odd jobs." I told her that getting hand outs from her father is not a job, that she can technically get hand outs, unemployment, and a job if she wanted to. She just muttered, "Oh, I don't want the stress of all of that."

My point in my complaining is that all of these hand outs, government and from family, often keep people where they are. They don't go out and help themselves, we just need to get rid of them all. The Bible says, "If you do not work you do not eat." It's time Christians put that into practice.

I agree. Government often keeps people on the bottom. A lady I work with explained it this way… Her grandfather was a farmer, her dad was a farmer, she married a farmer and now farms with her husband. She has had a pattern established in her life for generations. Now we have families whose grandparents, parents and children are looking to the Government to take care of them. I can understanding not wanting to take a minimum wage job if our employment insurance pays more, but at some point you have to get off your can and get a job.

It's the mindset that has to be fixed, not really the system. While the system should be fixed, but it probably won't so don't expect it. The change has to come on the 'local' level, ie. the person themselves. If her mindset is one of fear and worry about money then that's what she will get in return, more fear and worry about money and probably less money overall. It's a cyclic system that traps people. Like good ol JM said, if you get out and take some action, adjust the way you think (action helps do this) then you can change your situation quite easily.

But the mind is a tough nut to crack for many, but if they can overcome it, good can happen. My $.02.

I’ve been back to karate and really enjoying it. The study of martial arts was a big part of my life until about 6 or 7 years ago and I didn’t realize how much I missed the practice until I went back for a visit. Below I’m working on a kata called Tekki Shodan in Japanese styles like Shotokan or Naihanchi in the older Okinawan styles. The angle of the camera is a little weird and makes my arms look high but I’m pretty sure they were not.

Haven't been doing much sipping or smoking of late. Probably for the best.

Yours in the Lord,

jm

Very cool!

I didn't ever try any traditional martial arts. Wrestling was my main 'combat' sport as a kid. Then BJJ, Muay Thai and Boxing when I was an adult. Your kata is superb. Do you guys still do dojo storms or was that just an 80's thing?

Not smoking too much myself but drinking a fair amount of scotch and JD. Love it on hot days. Once winter rolls around I always cut back and switch to tea or coffee.

Thanks.

Not sure what a dojo storm is. We are pretty traditional so just kata, kihon and kumite. We get into the "bunkai" or application which includes stand up grappling, judo type throws and joint locks. For example the first move in the kata I posted is a wristlock, when the guys drops or leans forward you knee and stomp. The lock looks something like this.

Gottcha. Summer is winding down, so is my drinking. It'll pick up again near "Christ's Mass."

Yours in the Lord,
