We treat our collected rainwater by putting in a chloride tab like used in a swimming pool. Then it goes through a filter.

We also save the bottles, like one gallon vinegar bottles, and store some water in them.

anyone else have a method to purify water?

Howdy Boy is that a missed priority! Currently we are just stocking up on bottled water. But when we retire (some months away) we plan to set up a rain collection system that funnels the water from our roof into a couple 500 gallon barrels.
You can purchase inflatable pools from amazon which can each be filled with 1500 gallons of water. Get three of four of these and you have over 6000 gallons of water. Buy the cover also and keep the light out (no algae). Add some chlorine... and I see no problems.

You will still want to filter it in some way. Our cistern collects 8000 gallons (though we are making a small change to make it 10,000) and we chlorinate it but there is still issues of things getting in.

Yes, there are some filtration systems out there, 3 stages. But I do not what to have to depend on that after something bad comes down the pike.

no, not just that. We chlorinate and filter.

I was reading a book the other day about storing water and the guy said that plastic bottles of water can be stored in the garage but not sit directly on the cement floor. He wrote that it causes a chemical reaction that can affect the water. Have you heard anything about that?

There is this from FEMA:

FEMA B-526
"Do not store any plastic water container directly on concrete to prevent contaminating chemicals leaching from the concrete into the water and also degrading the plastic bottle."

Some refuse this and say it is misinterpreted.

Some say you can put the glass bottles in direct sunlight for a few days and the radiation will kill anything in the water. I am not sure about this... but I did fill a couple dozen 2 liter drink bottles with water and they have been in the sun for some time. I need to open one up and test it.

I use bleach in a collection of simply apple bottles

We have decided on a big berky (the second in from the right) with extra filters its a passive system but purifies something like 10,000 gallons, made of materials that will last.

We have also decided on sawyer mini water filters

Just a note. I heard a lady speaking from christchurch nz after thier earthquake.she said one thing you should not do is store things in only one part of the house.as she found out... You cant assume you will be able to get to them when its buried under roof and walls and the ground liquified and mud filled the crushed mess.
Old adage i guess. Dont put all the eggs in onebasket..

And yes bore (well) water can become toxic after earthquakes if near by contaminants are forced into the water table by the sheer pressures at work.

Have faith in God..keep the faith.

Here is an idea i had for a water filter using simple material yet in my mind should be effective . Take a 2 liter bottle and a funnel. fill bottle 1/2 full of play sand. Then add a 3" layer of activated charcoal. finally fill the rest of the way with pea gravel. You could make several of these rather inexpensively and store for later use.
When preparing to use them for filtering rain water you have collected or cistern water etc. drill a small hole in the cap of the 2 liter bottle. use a rubber band to secure a couple of coffee filters to the cap. then turn upside down and cut a hole in the bottom of the 2 liter bottle to pour the water through. Of course you would boil this water first and let it cool. add a purification tablet or small amount of bleach. I would guestimate that a filter like this would be good for at least 5 to 10 gallons. In my opinion.

I welcome any suggestions or critiques on this idea. God bless

Yup... the charcoal does the trick. May not remove microbes. Boil the water, then put it through the filter to remove the particulate matter. What do you think?

We have recently had a new well dug and if the power went out could i just rig a mechanical pump up and still get water? Would the ground water become tainted after an emp event?

Just curious, how did you choose on the location of your well? Was/which technology used to find it? Thanks!
