  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You get your tea and i'll make a coffee! Col, try reading this first ~ this is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say :

III. THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY

1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the ******.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.608

1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."609 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.611~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Where did purgatory originate and what are the rules and or procedure associated with it? I had never heard of this before joining CF and hanging around OBOB.

Col,

The following link is probably one of the best articles I've ever read on purgatory. It wasn't even written by a Catholic.

That is an excellent article. It was very well written and easy follow, thankyou very much.
So would I be right in saying that the Catholic belief is that as christians in this life as we grow in faith and maturity we are in effect experiencing a form of "earthy purgatory" (for want of a better name) because we are being purged of our "worldly ways'' as we grow closer to God and more Christ like. Then when we die things left uncompleted are then completed as it is impossible to be perfect in our mortal lives.

I think that is correct, although I do believe that there may be some people, atlhough possibly few, that have been completely purged while here on earth, and will go straight to heaven. Although I may be wrong about this. But I do think that you have a grasp of what purgatory is.

Bingo :)
One key thing is that all those in purgatory are destined for heaven.

I was listening to a presentation yesterday about pergatory. The presenter made a very good observation...the only difference between pergatory and hell is hope. Those in pergatory have the hope (well, the knowledge) that they will eventually be in Heaven with God, whereas those in hell know they are there for eternity.

That is one very good reason to NOT live a lukewarm life...be passionate about your faith, and continue to grow in it...be a Saint, and skip pergatory!
