i believe in middle age england if you were caught commiting adultery you were locked in stocks in the middle of town for your shame to be known to all,i think there were not many people who reoffended...........the old ways are the best sometimes
Actually, royals and the nobility -- at least the men -- seem to have committed adultery with impunity. For common people, however, penalties could be pretty fierce. From the 11th century, an adulterer was subject to having his (or more likely her) ears and nose cut off. In the 17th century, Cromwell introduced the death penalty for adultery. Sometimes, the old ways aren't so good.

I just don't understand what goes through a person's head to make them do things like this. "Hey, let's go smash up a Church and pee in the Holy Water." or "Let's go paint swastikas on the side of a Temple". It's really beyond me. I mean....I don't condone stealing but at least you get something out of it. What do you get from this other than destroying and hurting? Very upsetting story.

perhaps community service --- janitorial services for that church?
Great idea! Not only will it benefit the Church but also...possibly....teach these morons how their deeds hurt real people by having them interact with the Priest and parishioners.

I think their should be a change in age now in the US becuase it seems the avg 16 yr old thinks he/she is already big and bad for the world. so why not let them have a taste of state pent? ;)

and it seems another way that satan is attacking the churches of today tis tis tis.

maybe you should request a tour of a prison in the area that you live..I wil tell you this, even after all the time that I have been employed, everytime you step through that gate and hear it slam home you still get a tense feeling, i have seen kids come in as teens who stole a car and leave a person who is no lonegr scared of prison and who now has gang contacts..Human storage is not the answer to these crimes, they need to be pay back the damages and perform community service as well as standing in front of that church and appologizing to the whole congragation for what they did and standing in teh doorway as mass lets out...thats what they need to do .

Worshipper of Yahweh]I have no idea why they weren't charged with a hate crime.

The article doesn't say but maybe they're Christians?

Or maybe the church was just a target of opportunity and they would have done the same things if it had been a library or a school.

The cost of the damages is estimated at 17,000 dollars. It was more than just urinating in "holy water"...they broke into a church and ruined the carpet amongst other things. They are being charged with vandelism, burglary and criminal mischief.

I am inclined however to agree with the poster who said this is a bit of an extreme punishment for a crime where no violence was committed. Property damage can be fixed or replaced.

When I was growing up, people used to tell me " two wrongs don't make a right." When I grew up and got converted, I read in the bible that God says vengance is His and not to repay evil for evil. I am consistently grieved over sentiment that calls for harsh punishment of social crimes in the States. Grace triumphs over mercy is another scripture that comes to mind......If these angry young people can't find grace from the church, where can they find it?

If the kids/parents pay back every last penny to get the church fixed, I would agree with you. A wrong can only be made right if the harmed party is made whole again. The church has to pursue a case to make sure it is justly compensated. Churches can't afford to take such a large hit, and best believe if their insurer picks up the tab, the Church will be required by their insurer to pursue these boys and their parents for every penny that the insurer paid out. One's duty to assist in collection is written into every insurance policy.

Terrible. :(

My Episcopal church is putting in a holy water font soon, luckily we're so small we don't have to worry about people coming in and ...er... relieving themselves and going unnoticed.

Another local Episcopal church keeps their doors opened 24/7, and I don't think they've had much of a vandalism problem.

I wish it were possible with every church...but my church is so large that I don't think keeping the doors open 24/7 would be a good idea.:sigh:

Respect for our right to worship, our right to property, and our right to be free from crime are what we should demand from our society's members. These kids should be forgiven. But they must be held accountable for their actions. Punishment is what is needed. Christ never said that wicked behavior was to be condoned. Some people think the Golden Rule implies this. We are to forgive others who transgress against us or society. We are not to hide or shelter them from the consequenses of their actions. We are to show mercy. But we are not to be spineless:thumbsup: :amen:

A few posters here don't seem to understand that it wasn't so much about the cost of property damage, money comes and goes. Whether the boys and their parents pay for it or not it's gonna get fixed. The big issue I see here is respect. To the catholics, it's not just a bowl of water and a building, it is the place of God and it is a big part of their beliefs. I'm sure that ANYONE here would be upset at anyone who came and just urinated all over your beliefs...even if you don't believe in any Gods. Lets say your greatest possession is your car, some kids came and urinated on the interior of your car, you'd want justice done wouldn't you? It's just a matter of respect.

Peace,
-Stefania

WOW! i just read through this thread and am amazed at some of the disrespect in these posts quite frankly. Just because your Catholic or don't have holy water doesnt mean you need to be so disrespectful does it? What if someone came into your church and urinated on all the bibles? What if someone came into your house and urinated on your family photos? Then would you feel any different? What this kids did was so wrong. What would make them vandalize a church like that. Even if it was a public library or a school they vandalized they would still be punished the same way. Vandalism certainly is a crime! If someone came in and vandalized my house and did 17,000 worth of damage i would expect them to be punished according to the law.
