Actually, royals and the nobility -- at least the men -- seem to have committed adultery with impunity. For common people, however, penalties could be pretty fierce. From the 11th century, an adulterer was subject to having his (or more likely her) ears and nose cut off. In the 17th century, Cromwell introduced the death penalty for adultery.
