  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What a sensationalist headline. I doubt they'd have been charged with anything other than a charge of public uriniation, if anything, if they hadn't also done property damage. They should be punished and made to do reparations under the law for what they damaged, just like any other vandals.

It's a vile sacriledge, to be sure, but I don't think the charge for doing it in a church should be any different than doing it anywhere else. It's not the government's place to make that kind of call.

You want to place people in JAIL for doing a silly ill-advised prank??? Do you have any idea what jail does to people? They come out real criminals!
I guess you didn't read the article. They did 17,000 worth of damage to the church. IT wasn't just the desecration of the Holy Water.
They were charged correctly.
Please read the entire article before making comments on it

If you read the article, it indicates that there was $17,000 worth of damage in addition to the urination into the holy water fonts. That is definitely in the felony range.

Because of crimes like this, many churches are closed to visitors except when services are held and the building is secure. This is unfortunate but necessary.

You don't realize the seriousness of this crime apparently. They desecrated a holy place!

Earth was made by god as a place for man ( made in gods image) to dwell in the Eyes of the Lord......we as a human race desecrate this holy place everyday.....Maybe we need to start looking at the Bigger picture...

When I was in Savannah in April, I noticed that St. John the Baptist Cathedral has a security guard on duty. It would be unfortunate if the church couldn't afford a guard and had to keep its doors locked; then I wouldn't have got to see where Flannery O'Connor heard Mass when she was a child.

I'm not saying these kids need to be in jail; I doubt much good would come of that. But they obviously have too much time on their hands. I'd be happy to see them sentenced to some pretty substantial public service, as well as some kind of restitution to the church they vandalized. Assuming that the going rate for their services is minimum wage, how long do you think it would take them to work off $17K?

YOU ARE RIGHT!!
I a Correctional sergeant, I have worked in both Juvy and Max adult priosons, I can tell you this...Prison and Juvy prison the most is nothing more then a galdiator school, prisons turn kids into criminals, lets not forget that when you have 2000+ criminals in one area it turns into one big criminal convention...these kids need to community service and to be fronted out in the publics eye to induce change, they also it appears need parental supervison.

They are criminals. I don't know where you live but in the United States, vandalism is a CRIME!

From the article:

All are charged with burglary and criminal mischief, both FELONIES.

One of my clients is a counselor at a juvenile detention center, and he agrees. He said that a kid who has been in before is no longer scared of the place, and is for all practical purposes a hardened criminal already. He said the only kids he can reach at all are some of the ones who are in for the first time. That doesn't sound like jail is working at all.

One person mentioned that they should be forgiven. I sincerely hope that the individuals of the church desecrated do forgive them. They should also be charged and punished; this is called Justice. They caused $17,000 worth of damage and desecrated a church and destroyed private property. I hope that someone can show these kids what the church and Christ offers them. and perhaps community service --- janitorial services for that church?
