I was just diagnosed with PTSD today. Does anyone else struggle with this?
The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.
If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.
If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I want to thank you for responding to my post. I was starting to wonder if I was invisible. I will start doing some research on PTSD. The more I understand about it the more I can help myself. I'm sorry that you struggle with this too!

Im working on flashbacks.
One technique is called grounding you use your five senses to connect with the present time.
1 Sound: Turn on loud music
Loud music will be hard to ignore. As a result your attention will be directed to it and bring you back to the present moment
2:Touch: Grip a piece of Ice
If you notice you are slipping back into a flashback hold on to a piece of ice. It will be hard to direct your attention away from the extreme coldness forcing you to stay in touch with the present moment.
3: Smell: Sniff some strong peppermint
When you smell something strong, its hard to focus on anything else. It can bring you back to the present moment and slow down or stop altogether the flashback
4:Taste: Bite into a Lemon
The sourness of a lemon and the strong sensation it produces in your mouth when you bite into it can force you to stay in the presence
5:Sight: Take an inventory of everything around you
connect with the present moment by listing everything around you. Identify colors how many things are around you. List off the noises you hear. Taking an inventory of whats around you will connect you with the current moment
This is just a list of things they gave me to try. You have to try to see what works for you. Using your senses is suppose to help. You can use alot of things. From like a rubber band on your wrist popping it will cause you to think about the pain. Things like that help sometimes. What they are teaching me is to try to stay in reality when I start to slip back into a flashback.
Focusing on your breathing and taking deep breaths is a big part of it.
Another big thing is to write down your triggers. And then write beside it the facts. Like seeing something know its there but it cant hurt you. And if you dont feel safe fake the feeling till you can get somewhere safe feeling. Knowing your triggers and then writing them down and what you can do to cope with them is very good to do but it takes practice with doing it.
Im sorry it dont get better over night. But with teaching yourself some of these techniques and practicing them over and over it will get better.
If you need more things I will be more than happy to try to give you more. Im a work in progress myself and it takes practice. But Im here for you if you need.
Much Love Many Prayers
I think I've made all my teachers aware of the PTSD, and most of them let me just get up and leave. I'm still struggling with the PTSD though.
