Good call, we need a psalter thread.

I'm not going to tell you that we need to sing Psalms to the exclusion of hymns I do personally feel we should sing the Psalter for a majority of our worship songs.

Amen. We do both at our church with always at least one metrical psalm in addition to a responsive reading of one psalm. In fact, since we're going through the Psalms one chapter at a time in Sunday School, our pastor has also been working on creating a "house metrical psalter."

For home use, I use The Book of Psalms for Worship, which I really like, and the occasional Genevan Psalter for certain tunes I just love (like 51 and 95). I scripted some linux tools to convert the midi files for all of these to mp3s and have them on my phone so I can have the tune while singing. Helps to learn new tunes. :)

Besides metrical psalms, I'm also a big fan of plainsong chanting because it has the advantage of using the unmodified biblical text.

The KJV Psalms sound good, not much variation, but a good translation.

Psalms 1 & 3 - YouTube

Interesting! It seems like it would be hard to learn the tunes though given the irregular meter. I guess that's the advantage of plainchant when it comes to using the basic text. Chant dosen't require a regular meter and you can learn a handful of tones and you're good to go with your Bible. But this is neat to see folks at least trying this approach.

I'm looking over the link for the Psalms for Worship now.

Cool. I want to get one of their new mini psalters on the Bible paper they just came out with. I like little books.

If you do decide to pick it up and want the mp3 conversions I did, let me know and I'll upload them. :)

Our Reformed Presbyterian church in Virginia sang two selections from the Psalter and one hymn in the worship service. Even though the church here in PA, a PC(USA) congregation, sings exclusively the old hymns from the 50's or before, I miss singing the Psalms very much.
