  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It would be good if people can join me on my quest to read this book called " Protestants: The Faith that Made the modern world" by Alec Ryrie. So far its been insightful.

I figured that it would be a good thing to know how all these denominations came about, how they branched, and how it affect society. I hear alot of how people want to do away with religion, but fail to see how much of an impact it has made in society and how much of how we see the world has been affected by some of the pioneers of Protestantism. Plus I'm a Protestant, so also is cool to understand my lineage per say.

I already appreciate how this book is not sugarcoated, it gives the good, bad, and ugly of the journey, where it gives accounts and context and leaves it to the reader to form their own opinions on certain events.

Anyone care to read along with me?

Another good one is Erasmus of Christendom, by Roland Bainton. Erasmus was not a Protestant as such, but it shows just how important a sound approach to meaning in Scripture is, which was at the heart of the Renaissance and the sort of careful Bible study that went into the Reformation. Historical grammatical interpretation - unlocking the meaning of words in their context - is so vastly important.

Sounds an interesting book there; enjoy your read!

I wonder if the Ryrie in question is related to the Charles Ryrie of the Ryrie Study Bible fame?
I thought that too. I. may not get around to getting the book due to budget but I would still be interested in reading discussions on it. Sadly my library doesn't have any really Christian books.
Pagan or other similar yes plenty.

Same here, and the Christian books are more of either an bio of the preacher or self-help. They do have the Bible (KJV) on the shelves from someone to take out so that’s still comforting for me.

It would be good if there were more of a real demand for literature on Biblical doctrine.

In some ways the writings of James R. White fill a niche.

Nice! I’ve just passed halfway, and my goodness, I didn’t realized how much craziness went down....

A good read, then?

It’s a dangerous read. At moments I felt appalled, but stimutaneouely in awe. How denominations came to be, it’s involvement with major key events in world history.

Protestants are both lovers and fighters, and that passion have presented themselves in such monumental ways. It gives me that feeling of watching a street preacher with a sign, where part of me feel that cringiness of how fervent they are sharing the gospel and wants to critique and soften it up and at the same time feel that get fired up at how committed and unwavering their faith is and hope I never see them off the street.

It reminds me of some quite out of a manga where the people are trying to get rid of these huge Titans, one of soildiers said “ these leaders may be sending soildiers to a sure death, but they are great because they are willing to forgo their humanity to defeat the Titans”. And that’s the energy I get from reading the book, they are willing to be martyrs to have the gospel survive. And as ugly as it is, I’m grateful for that.

What is also good to remember is not so much that we need to keep focused on the label Protestant as on the fact that it's our personal and collective relationship with the witness of Scripture that really counts, and has counted down the centuries in church history.

E H Broadbent's The Pilgrim Church is another good book.

Just finished reading the book, and wow I’ve learned sooooo much, I have to go back again and read in details.

But wow, it’s almost someone pulled me over and said “ grab a beer and pull a chair, I gotta story for you!”

Phew.

Who else started the book?
