  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

:sorry: Should protein bars only be eaten around the time of working out? Or can you eat them regularly (like once a day) if you know you don't get an adequate amount of protein?

I would like to begin eating one for breakfast each day just because they're somewhat good for you and I need a quick breakfast. I know I don't get enough protein in my diet but I would not be working out around the time I eat it. My fear is gaining weight.

:help:

I eat them regularly, LIY. I have severe hypoglycemia and can't eat sugar. Because of that, I have to increase my protein...it's a big weird mess! :)

I usually eat at least 1 a day, more often 2 a day. I haven't gained wait from them. It's an acquired taste though... :D The first time I ate one, I swore I would never have another... LOL I think you will be fine, just don't get TOO much protein!

Why not drink some milk and save your money on those expensive bars that offer no benefits over cheaper alternatives? You can mix some milk with yogurt and even add some powdered milk to the mix to give you extra protein if your diet is deficient.

I highly doubt you will get too much protein in your diet. Most bodybuilders eat around 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight daily with no problems.

hehe...thnx joyful....do know what happens if you do get too much protein in your diet?
I think the only side effects to too much protein would be the way it affects your liver, because your liver cleans your bloodstream. This is something I've heard but not investigated.

Detour is a (relatively) good tasting protein bar. Tastes a bit like a snickers on steroids, has roughly 15 grams of pro.

You can't force protein into muscles, you can only add protein to your bloodstream so that it's there when you need it, which leads me to think that overdosing on protein shouldn't be a concern of yours. If you're not getting enough, a protein bar a day probably won't send you over the edge.

Luna is a bar made specifcally for women (might not be a "protein" bar though). If you eat that, you could be one of the Luna-chicks!

I've heard of liver damage from too much...granted, it would probably take a lot.

As for the suggestion of pasta, rice, potatos and bread - you don't know too much about hypoglycemia, do you? :D Hehe. Just kidding! Those are the biggest no-nos in the book for me because of the amount of carbohydrates they contain... It's not just sugar that is bad for me, but the carbs as well.

Is this because they're all starches?

The idea that to much protien can harm you liver or your kidneys is not proven. Protien is required by your body to develop and maintain muscle. It is also great for making you feel full. I work out this time a week, and I eat 1g of protien per lbs of body weight (216g a day). This come from protien powder, protien bars, and other foods high in protien.

Protein bars wont make you fat, protein is more for building the bodies muscles etc, and its not necessary to eat it befroe or during your work out, it can be good to have it there already so after a work out the body can start to repair anyway. While protein can be used as an energy source unless you take inamazingly high amounts i dont think it gets converted to glycogen much, yet alone fat. Also it will, again, only affect your liver if you are eating much too much protein, as the liver is the body organ that deaminises the amino acids(what make up protein) or in other words take away the nitrogen in them. This is also how it affects the kidneys as the nitrogen is turned into Urea(the reason urine is named what it is) and taken out by the kidneys. If you have too much of it from large deanimation(only occuring when too much protein is present) then the kidney has to remove more urea from the blood stream than usual, which can cause problems.
