  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dictionary.com defines protagonist as "the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary work." To me, there's not really a difference between the protagonist and the main character. I just refer to all the viewpoint characters as main characters, since the story is told from their perspectives. (However, if one character's POV is only heard for a scene or two, I wouldn't classify him/her as a main character.)

Here's the case with my story. I would classify Tariel as my protagonist because the story focuses on her and her internal struggle; she's the one who fights the final battle against longtime enemy, ect. But really, the story wouldn't go much of anywhere without Eliel. In a way, Eliel's the one the story is really about, and that's why I would classify her as the main character. I'm not sure if this makes sense. Let me try an example that isn't mine.

Final Fantasy X: The protagonist (the character you play as and control for the entire game) is a boy named Tidus. The Main Character (the real driving force behind the story) is a girl named Yuna. Totally different people. something kinda like that

i'd be interested to read that. i'm finding it hard to imagine, and i'm wondering how exactly you did it???

I've done it before. You have a story that's told from someone else's perspective, when it's really about someone else.

Example: "A Rose for Emily" is the story of Emily, a lady in a small Southern town during the late 1920s or early 1930s. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read the story, but I will tell you that although it's about Emily, it's told from the POV of the townsfolk, using the pronoun "we."

I always thought the protagonist was the hero that never wanted to be a hero. its a bit like 'procrastinate' isn't it?
But if thats what the dictionary says, i'll go with that.

I think the protagonist is the hero and the main character is the one who has the most diologue, or the story follows them more. Stories where the two aren't the same are usualy interesting, and some of the best stories have no main character, but switch between several main characters. however, there will probably still be one lead character, the one that seems to be in charge.
