  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Looking for a proper interpretation of this word

אֱוִלִי

The lexical form is actually אֱוִיל, which means something like "foolish, dumb".

Also which of these Greek words is the equivalent?
ποιμενικὰ ποιμένος ἀπείρου

ἄπειρος (the nominative singular form of ἀπείρου) can mean "without experience" or "unlearned", so I guess it comes closest. The other words are related to shepherding.

Liddel-Scott-Jones has this:

without trial or experience of a thing, unused to, unacquainted with, ἄθλων Thgn.1013; καλῶν Pi.I.8(7).70; κακότητος Emp.112.3; τυράννων Hdt.5.92.ά; τῆς ναυτικῆς Id.8.1; Περσέων Id.9.58, cf. 46; πόνων, νόσων, A.Ch.371, Fr.350.2; γνώμης S. Ant.1250; δικῶν Antipho 1.1; πολέμων Th.1.141; τοῦ μεγέθους τῆς νήσου Id.6.1; γραμμάτων Pl.Ap.26d; ἀνδρῶν ἀγαθῶν Lys.2.27; of a woman, ἄ. ἄλλων ἀνδρῶν not having known other men (beside her husband), Hdt.2.111; ἄ. λέχους E.Med.672: abs. in same sense, ib. 1091 (lyr.).
abs., inexperienced, ignorant, Pi.I.8(7).48, etc.; γλυκὺ δ' ἀπείροισι πόλεμος Id.Fr.110; δίδασκ' ἄπειρον A.Ch.118. Adv. ἀπείρως, ἔχειν τῶν νόμων Hdt.2.45; πρός τι X.Mem.2.6.29; περί τινος Isoc.5.19: Comp.ἀπειρότερον, παρεσκευασμένοι Th.1.49; -οτέρως Isoc.12.37, Arist.Resp.470b9.

There's a second entry that means "endless" or "limitless", and it's the same word. In fact, it's used in philosophy in the neuter (τὸ ἄπειρον) to describe the "Unbounded Eternal Unity" that all things are one and part of. Don't see anything that means "unqualified" here.

Regards,
Yonah

Thanks Yonah.

One more question

The word אֱוִלִי which I took directly from the online Masoretic text you said was actually אֱוִיל does that change the meaning? having the yod and lamed switched?

Also this word ἄπειρος is what was translated into the Greek in the LSS but they don't seem to have the same meaning. Is there not a word in Greek that means the same? Like μωρός where we get moron from I believe.

Thanks for all your help. :)

Langenscheidt shows both אֱוִיל (defective, אֱוִל) and אֱוִילִי (defective, אֱוִלִי) with the same meaning. Notice that the standard plural of אֱוִיל is defective as אֱוִלִים (also from Langenscheidt).

In Prov 1.22, the LXX uses the substantive adjective ἄφρων to mean "senseless" or "foolish". In several places I notice that it uses ἀσεβής as a translation of "fool", but this word really means "ungodly" or "unholy".

Hope this helps.
