What the fudge?Carolbob, I don't think that you know enough ancient languages to make a conclusion as to what Modern Egyptologists conclude.
So Fatboys, are you a linguist? There is no point to that argument. Egyptologists have stated that what JS supposedly translated made absolutely no sense.Breetai said:What the fudge?
Modern Egyptologists concluded that the "book of Abraham" papyri were not what Joe said they were. They were burial texts. They concluded that Joe was guilty of textual masacism. You don't need to know any ancient languages to be able to read what an Egyptologist concludes!

Egyptian was believed to undecipherable in that day. So he knew he could get away with it, that's why JS said they were "reformed Egyptian". The Rosetta Stone grammar was not published until 1837, so JS knew that he could get away with stating the translations were from Reformed Egyptian. What has been found has still not proven anything but more of the same translation of funeral documents.fatboys said:FB: That hurt.
FB: If he was a fraud, why would he put them out there for all to read, knowing that there would be egyptologists that would be able to read them? Gutsy move. He had already sent Martin Harris with copied characters from the Gold plates, that he took to the foremost linguists of his day. So Joseph Smith knew that there were people out there that would be able to read this language.
Also there have been found fragments of papyri which was part of the purchase made by Joseph Smith from Chandler. These are not the facsimilies, nor are they what Joseph Smith used to translate the Book of Abraham.

While I agree that the lds church is a false church, don't you think that your wording is a bit.... dramatic?Coeptis said:those dirty rotten liars want to suck your soul and feed you to the devil. whatever is created by the mormon hand creates the illusion of perfection. the more you believe what they say the stronger they get but the weaker you will get. unless, of course you are of mormon blood (devil blood) then you will become stronger as your people devour more Christians

Into ignoring valid points Doc?
Did the first Americans come from Australia? ...still doesn't prove any of the BoM claims. It does say that not all of the pre-Columbian inhabitants of America were from Asia.carolbob said:Egyptian was believed to undecipherable in that day. That is a very good point. The Hebrew people did not exactly like the egyptians too much. I dont think the Jewish people of today would write their records in German.carolbob said:Why would Hebrews write in Egyptian anyway???
Here is a quote from a website to answer this.carolbob said:Why would Hebrews write in Egyptian anyway???
At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), held Nov. 1997 in San Francisco. Non-LDS scholar Nili S. Fox discussed the development of Egyptian hieratic numerals used in Hebrew texts by Israelites during the ninth through seventh centuries B.C. Fox noted that the Israelite scribes were acquainted with the Egyptian writing system and that there was a longer history of ties between Egypt and both Judah and Israel than previously thought. Hebrews using an Egyptian writing system? The idea is a lot more plausible today that it was in Joseph Smith's time. The anti-Mormon critics who dismiss the possibility ("Jews hated the Egyptians, their former slavemasters, and would never think of using anything from Egyptian culture!") continue to stand on a foundation of sand, and the sand is shifting again.
Where does it say this, please.CaliforniaKid said:Plus the Book of Mormon says it's written in Egyptian to save space, but both hieroglyphics and the later hieratic script are far less compact than Hebrew, especially since Hebrew omits the vowels.
